Great news even though no release date is set yet. Whether they reframe the final two seasons and use the existing protected 16:9 framing from the first three OR just remaster the entire show in its OAR of 4:3 for HD, I will definitely finally watch this show once it's on Blu-ray.

Anyone seen Jamesy Boy? It's streaming on Netflix. It's a decent enough movie with a lot of small rolls from a handful of actors from The Wire.

Seth Gilliam (aka Carver), came into the movie theater (where I work at) today to see John Wick. I was geeking out like crazy. Couldn't think of what to say so I just said, "uhh...hey Carver." He looked puzzled for a few seconds and then smiled and said oh yeah, hey. As he was leaving, we made eye contact, exchanged head nods, and I told him I was a big fan and to keep up the good work. I looked like such a dweeb thought it was awesome though.

lol it's funny to me he feels the need to act like he doesn't remember the name of the character he played in all five seasons of the best show ever.

Dude, I get it, you don't want your whole career defined by one role, but cmon man.

that would have been great. He had ear buds in as he was leaving the theater, so I didn't want to get all up in his business. just gave him some nice words as he walked past towards the exit.

well I was thinking he was at my theater due to TWD, assuming they were in the area filming. If so, it would have been so awesome had he came with D'Angelo or Tyrese would have been awesome.

It's official now, The Wire is coming to Blu-ray completely remastered from the original 35mm film elements. It will be 16:9 which may annoy some but overall I think it will open up the show to a larger audience and look far better than the awful looking DVDs HBO currently has out.

How could 16:9 possibly be a deal breaker? It being 4:3 was one of the most annoying things about it.

I don't think 4:3 was essential to the story or authenticity.

The higher pq/aq the better in my book.

I will absolutely buy this on BD.

The show was made to be viewed in 4:3. The black bars on the sides don't bother me.

Exactly, Simon made some really peculiar statements in his original article about 4:3 which he's since removed, stating they "filmed in SD" when they filmed on 35mm film.

I've seen the results of the X Files which were protected for 16:9 and it looks stunning, happy to finally get to see The Wire in HD and frame composition doesn't change much at all (which his examples show in his new article) in the examples I've seen.

In his first example, the 'good' one, you can see at least one character, Horseface, the short fat dude, look around for his mark and then stand on it. A few others wander aimless knowing they're off screen. In 4:3, this wasn't an issue. In 16:9, it was quite visible.

I only see the crane shot and the neon lit pilot scene, what is the time stamp on the crane shot you're talking about? I didn't notice it.

it's at 0:27 in the far right. I had to watch three times. It's literally a split second you see him look down. if this is what you watch for when you watch television shows, I don't know what to tell you.

    Re: Official The Wire Thread

I've been rewatching this over the past few weeks. I'm late in season four and I had a few thoughts:

    1) It seems like Carcetti goes from winning the primary to being the mayor really fast, especially without any mention of him winning the general election. It is mentioned that him winning the general election is a virtual certainty since 9/10 Baltimoreans are Democrats. But Royce doesn't seem like he'd have to leave office until after Carcetti wins the general election.

    2) Officer Walker — this scandalous motherfucker, in case you don't remember; he broke fingers, stole the ring and had paint thrown on him — might be the worst character on this show.

    3) Season two was better than I remember. Frank Sobotka is such a great character. Even Ziggy, who made my roll my eyes when he came on screen my first time through the series, wasn't so bad.
