LMAO.

It was only a matter of time. Hilarious.

What's your current opinion of the album?

Re: Is Big Whiskey getting worse to anyone else?

It keeps getting better for me everytime I listen to it and it's making me so happy to finally have a new DMB album that achieves this. I really think this album is great. I'm not saying it's equal to the big three but I don't really feel like I need to compare it to those albums because it's so different. With that being said I have to disagree with what someone said in another thread about the LWS sessions being so much better than Big Whiskey. I think if you really think about it the LWS isn't as good as the Big 3 and if you go on to compare the LWS to BW either one could be better depending on your mood. At least that's how it is for me. Anyone else agree?

Re: Is Big Whiskey getting worse to anyone else?

My only complaint is the lack of length on some of the tracks. Time Bomb could have been immensely better if they added Tim's solo into the studio version. Also, I think they could have incorporated the opening riff back into the song somewhere.

The lack of Boyd is crazy, especially after hearing him play on some of the songs live. I mean, does anyone have any idea how that happened? He's just not there in the studio, but kicks ass live. How does that happen?

You and Me sucks. Its terrible. Only song I can't listen to.

Big Whiskey is better than Busted Stuff, but falls short of the Big 3. Some of it's songs are Big 3 quality though, just not the whole album. It comes second in plays behind crash for me.

Its a good album. I don't see how people don't like it.

I agree with you 300% on most everything you said, but I felt the need to highlight this particular segment. Why was the "that pace" song transformed into Time Bomb? They're completely independent. I love Time Bomb as well as the next person, but I feel it was a really sad waste of a great song concept to incorporate the pace segment in the beginning.

I was one of the few that didn't understand all the love for this album when it came out. That said, I still don't see it. Really IMO only 2-3 good songs on the whole album. Haven't listened to it since June and don't even really feel the need. Just so much filler and mediocre songs. Honestly I think I prefer ED over this album.

BWGK is a great album, no doubt. But imo they could have added a bunch of parts to most of the songs:

    Little boyd riffs in LITHOG
    turn up Tim in WIA
    Boyd during Dive In
RaShawn solo in middle of Spaceman
More BT during Alligator Pie, maybe a little breakdown
    Tim solo in Time Bomb
maybe a little percussion in Baby Blue.....maybe

Re: Is Big Whiskey getting worse to anyone else?

Big Whiskey has greater staying power than Everyday and Stand Up. Hands down.

I went to the first Giants Stadium show in '01 after enjoying three INCREDIBLE '00 shows and, quite frankly, the bad taste from listening to ED soured my experience at this gig (and my entire '01 tour experience, for that matter, seeing as how every set was in promotion of a clunker of an album); so much so, I didn't go to another DMB show until '06.

And with a set laden with garbage SU tracks at the Scranton show I attended (Hunger, American Baby, Bayou encore), I was left, perhaps, with an even worse taste (consider that I didn't attend a single '05 show knowing how SU-heavy the sets would be).

Then, I attended the Bethel Woods show, my first in three years, and, despite a set that had 10 BW songs in it (none of which, I felt, weighed down the show), I was none too disappointed. In my opinion, the majority of the BW tracks translate well to the live setting. That sold the album for me.

I constantly tried to fool myself into thinking ED and SU were good albums, simply because they were DMB records, but I just couldn't do it. I never had to sell myself on thinking BW was a good album...it only took one listen to decide that for myself. And the album has only grown on me more with time. As I felt BW was superior to ED and SU, I gave each of them a listen just to prove this notion to be true...and I was right: SU took the best part of the band out of the equation (Carter) and ED is just a synthed-out piece of trash, putting them at the very bottom of the DMB catalogue (which is clearly the consensus here).

Does BW stand up against the "Big 3?" Not at all...but it's still a quality album that has been in heavy rotation for me since its release. To call it "mediocre" and "pedestrian" is off-base.

This is the biggest crime on Big Whiskey IMO. Spaceman is infinitely better live with Jeff's fills and Rashawn's solo. Other than that, I love Big Whiskey

I still like it as much as the first time I heard it, but I do skip around a lot more then i used to. I mostly listen to it during my last work hour of the day. Still place it above Everyday but below the big 3 and Busted Stuff

I'd say don't stress it over this album. Listen to what satisfies you.

    Other side comments:
Too much credit to producers. Put it on the band. Sure, if you want someone to "make 'em shine," then the producer will do that. However, the quality of solely the songs, is on the band (music & lyrics). The one thing about artists is that they can always be working. It's a lifestyle. Periods of rest are important, otherwise you burn the candle at both ends, but each member can always be working on a new idea. Dave can keep a journal. Simple shit.

Making an album is a commitment, like any other artistic undertaking. Either you have a good idea going into it, or you're willing to tuck yourself away for a while in the studio and work your ass off.

If I could distill my rambles into one word: Discipline.

    Fail.
