Re: Album of the Day
Kendrick Lamar- To Pimp a Butterfly
I've given this a solid 12-15 listens at this point, and it's definitely grown on me since my first two listens. It's denseness has worn off after fully grasping the structure of the album and the story it is telling, my ear's expectations have subsided and I'm feeling it on a more natural level, seeing it for what it is. I think it is a great album, the whole being greater than the sum of it's parts to a certain extent.
Lyrically, I think it's his best offering, the ability to paint a picture and tell a story within songs is top notch. Musically, the aesthetic is quite different with his previous-- more of a live band feel, jazz, spoken word beat poetry, funk-- there aren't any huge bangers besides "Hood Politics", which given it's lyrical content and it's place in the albums journey, makes sense that this is the one song that has that feel-- not a coincidence. When its appropriate, he nails it-- it seems like he can do that whenever he wants. Flows, voices, ability to play different characters and deliver them distinctly and convincingly. It's impressive and engaging.
The guy made the album he had to make for himself as a person and an artist. Even though there are spots that don't work as well as they could have, imo (the back up vocals and finger pointing to "the funk" on Kunta... eh, that song just misses for me), overall it works more times than not. Loving this album is complicated, but it's feeling easier with each listen.
We'll see how it holds up 6 months from now.
