Got the chance to spend a few minutes with Henry again in Dallas. They had a really late load in for the show so I didn't get a chance to get in stage this time. He apologized but there's no reason for him to! Still awesome he came and chatted for a few.

As far as kit changes, we obviously have the acoustic kit. The 13" tom has been replaced with what looks to be a 10x6 Pork Pie snare of sorts. It's used on the acoustic kit as well. Everything else on the main kit is the same so far.

I noticed that he's expanded his "acoustic set" kit for the past couple of shows. He is using some bigger crashes and is playing a little heavier for some of the songs. There is definitely more kick and snare and he's been playing less of the percussion pieces on some songs.

    Something you noticed as well?

Definitely. I think he just can't not play aggressive now even on the small kit. More hot rods and less hands. I haven't seen him touch the timbales yet. Definitely moving up the crash size though. Started off as splashes, 14" crashes, now looks to be 16s.

Love the crash of doom as the ride. Such a great cymbal

Had that cymbal and sold it.....wish I didn't. I have so many uses for it now with a new gig I started.

I will never do that again.

I did the exact same. Just scored a free 10x6 snare for my Carter replica kit though!

Did a drum cover of Lie in our graves over a D&T acoustic version the other day...it's busy but that's how I like to play it. Dave's rhythms bring so much creativity to the table. So much fun to play and it's a tune you can use your imagination with as a drummer. Here it is...

    i didn't know Carter played cross-handed also (right hand on hi-hat);

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YxPULk4duqA

    (from 6:05)

and then he switched back to open hand playing at 8:07 (with a nice stick whirl!)

    what a guy!

Posted this in the acoustic discussion too...

Now, regarding your performance, I don't know if grace notes are getting lost in translation, the V-drums not reacting well or if you've got an issue with evenness of sound/quality between hands but be mindful of that. As you were trying to go the sextuplets around the toms they were rather choppy.

Personally, too much crashy and sloshy hi-hat for me. If they're building a jam, you should be too. Different pieces of your kit provide tension and release. Also, just because there is space doesn't mean you need to fill it. I think the business caused some timing issues to occur, honestly.

Edit: (Actually, I just took time to watch The Stone. Definitely an issue of desired complexity and ability being at two different levels. Some good ideas but lacked execution. Be mindful of time and quality of what you're playing)
Remember, any tension in your hands (including curled pinkies) will translate to tension that makes it difficult for you to play.

Do you work at a guitar center by chance?

Absolutely not. Can't stand the place. I support my local mom and pop shops. If I go into GC, it's to try something that I'm going but at my local store.

    I'm a musician/educator/composer.

Are you a professor of music?...Could you post your drum cover of LIOG acoustic for me?? Im a visual learner. That would be awesome! I cant wait to see it! Lucky for you that you probably have an amazing set and have something other than the first versions of imovie and garageband. Extremely jealous dude.

Some of my students, especially Marching Band/Drum Corps, call me Dr. Death but no, I'm not a professor. Almost a master though! I'm just someone who has studied with people like Dom Famularo and Tommy Igoe and enjoys the educational process. I'm also involved with just about every aspect of percussion.

You're going to have to wait to see me cover something, though. Preparing a move and the kit/setup is disassembled and my wife will kill me if I attempt to set it back up.

Good to hear that man. Glad you enjoyed it. Im not a fan of playing with or over Carter. He's the best and there's no reason to copy exactly what he does. Dave and Tim acoustic versions are the way to go. Use the carter influence but use my own imagination.

I like drumming to songs with Carter, but I guess it's because it's all I have. When I play The Stone I always do a certain fill and it sounds confusing with Carter also playing in the background haha. I rarely try to play exactly what he plays, I just take a lot from him and give my own twist on it

And I see he has what looks like a wood snare to the far right and quick question does he usually use a black beauty w/ the imperal lugs or tube lugs?

That snare is a 10x7 mahogany pork pie that's used on the acoustic kit. Had the black beauty since 09.

Yeah, i was about to ask a question myself reg the acoustic set, what kind of bass drum is he using? there are only congas in front of him, but i definitely hear some kind of bass drum (you can also see he's using his right leg, stomping unto something)
