Pretty sure someone did. I'm not sure I follow exactly what he's trying to do. Is he cutting footage too? Is he trying to improve the season by getting rid of some stuff? Or is it just a chronological cut? He should just scrap the whole 4th season and pretend it never happened. So awful.

    Not going to happen.

He's said Season 4 is act 1 of a three act thing. Plus I'm sure sure Season 4 will look better if we see where it's all going.

Oh I know it won't happen. Just saying that's how bad and disappointing it was.

agreed. and better with repeat viewings, just like the first three seasons. s4 doesn't match the quality of the first three, but i'd hardly call it bad.

The first 3 seasons of this show are, in my personal opinion, the funniest episodes of television ever to air and make it one of my favorite shows. I have watched and rewatched every episode more than I can count. So, I am as big a fan as any. That being said, Season 4 was absolutely abysmal. It doesn't matter how many times I try, I can't find a single good episode in the bunch. We tried watching a couple last night and had to quit watching the first Lindsay episode and had a tough time making it through the Buster episode. I don't know if people who liked Season 4 are just lying to themselves, or just lowered their expectations completely. I seriously cannot understand how any big fan of the original 3 seasons could find Season 4 the least bit funny or entertaining.

The jokes are way more obvious and in your face (one of the best things about AD 1-3 is the subtlety of the humor), the "new format" changed the idea of the show entirely and quite frankly the acting feels forced. Nothing about Season 4 felt like Arrested Development. The show was off the air for what, 6-7 years? It felt like the actors were trying too hard to play their old characters, which in turn makes their portrayals feel less natural and nothing like their original character. The worst offender of this was Michael Cera. Nothing about him felt like George Michael Bluth and it just came across as him showing up for the paycheck. They all tried too hard to be their original characters, and it just feels awkward.

If you REALLY enjoyed Season 4, then all the power to you. I really thought Hurwitz and his team would deliver, and there wasn't a second that I thought the season would disappoint. But holy smokes did they miss the mark.

    Re: Arrested Development (the movie)

to add to what I said:

I've mentioned this before, but another great aspect of what made AD great was the ensemble. Without the whole cast in place it just didn't work for me. Buster is an absolutely fantastic character, but not as a central character. He's so great because he's so weird and plays off characters like Michael so well. An entire hour long episode devoted to just him is just way too much. I don't want to see how truly bizarre Buster's personal life is. Some of the best jokes involving Buster (in the original 3 seasons) were references to things we never see. To see Buster sitting naked making a Lucille doll was so incredibly disturbing and not at all funny. These characters work so well because they have each other to play off of. That's what makes them funny.

While there's no question that season 4 would rank under 1-3, no certainly not would I say "abysmal" is an accurate enough description for the whole. Granted, I've only seen it once in its entirety so far, within those first few days of being online, and in my second attempt I only got maybe 3 episodes in before I was pulled away and just haven't gotten back to it yet, but I'll concede that my general memory was the Lindsey stuff was indeed possibly the weakest. plus good lord, Portia Derossie(sp?) has sooooo obviously gotten plenty of work done, and she is not the better for it.

My problem with S4 was the fact that Michael became like the rest of the family and we had to try and see George Michael fill the Michael S1-3 role - while still trying to be George Michael... and it felt flat.

The first 3 seasons are so good I can rewatch every episode over and over without getting tired of them. They're like Seinfeld. I think I've seen every episode 100 times and haven't gotten sick of any of them. Season 4? Well, just read my posts above. I pretend it never happened. I'd love it if they just let it go. Arrested Development ended with Season 3 in my eyes.

I'm ashamed I haven't even watched all of S4 yet. I waited all that time for it to come out on DVD because I didn't want to sign up for Netflix, and then I watched 3 or 4 episodes and just stopped watching. They weren't terrible, but they weren't great either. It was more like putting a book down and then letting too much time pass before picking it up again, not a conscious decision to stop watching the season. I have much less time for TV now, but I need to schedule a binge watch with the wife.

I need to do a full rewatch of this show. It's one of those shows I can't just watch a single episode - I need to it to be in proper succession. The jokes hit way harder when it's chronological.

I think S4 suffers from being too ambitious. The plot is so complex and takes place across so many episodes and periods of time that it requires too much of an investment. By the time stuff starts to click into place in the final few episodes, it's like, "Wait. What dots is that connecting again?"

There's funny stuff, but the joke density is down significantly compared to S1-3.

Hoping for the best for S5.

well but I think as Mitch Hurwitz has openly admitted, at least part of that structure was born out of simple practicalities of actor schedules. We had what, like, maybe 2 scenes in all of season 4 with the entire family? But it was going to be that way, or nothing at all.
I have to think he and they all have well received this criticism and want to aim higher for what they're doing.

speaking of which, I only just realized technically this was the "movie" thread I topped, but I wouldn't be surprised if what we next get is simply more netflix episodes. Actually at this point I'm kinda doubting a proper theatrical movie will ever happen (nor should?)

    Re: Arrested Development (the movie)

Season 4 was terrible and lacked any of the intelligence that the first 3 seasons had. Had I known it was going to be so bad I would never have hoped it got made in the first place. I truly thought there was no way they messed it up, but I was so wrong.

With that said, if they're going to try again they better nail it.
