The first 3 seasons of this show are, in my personal opinion, the funniest episodes of television ever to air and make it one of my favorite shows. I have watched and rewatched every episode more than I can count. So, I am as big a fan as any. That being said, Season 4 was absolutely abysmal. It doesn't matter how many times I try, I can't find a single good episode in the bunch. We tried watching a couple last night and had to quit watching the first Lindsay episode and had a tough time making it through the Buster episode. I don't know if people who liked Season 4 are just lying to themselves, or just lowered their expectations completely. I seriously cannot understand how any big fan of the original 3 seasons could find Season 4 the least bit funny or entertaining.
The jokes are way more obvious and in your face (one of the best things about AD 1-3 is the subtlety of the humor), the "new format" changed the idea of the show entirely and quite frankly the acting feels forced. Nothing about Season 4 felt like Arrested Development. The show was off the air for what, 6-7 years? It felt like the actors were trying too hard to play their old characters, which in turn makes their portrayals feel less natural and nothing like their original character. The worst offender of this was Michael Cera. Nothing about him felt like George Michael Bluth and it just came across as him showing up for the paycheck. They all tried too hard to be their original characters, and it just feels awkward.
If you REALLY enjoyed Season 4, then all the power to you. I really thought Hurwitz and his team would deliver, and there wasn't a second that I thought the season would disappoint. But holy smokes did they miss the mark.
