We got monuments. Sure, they're all civil war/slavery monuments, but we got em.

Funny, but we have plenty of those.

I just think it's not southern because of all the Yankee transplants down there.

I don't even try to hide it if I go south of KY. Your accent must be pretty hardcore if someone in Nola found it that funny. I can't even understand what anyone is saying anywhere in LA

Everything's bigger (including douchebags) in Texas

New Orleans has a whole different accent from the rest of South Louisiana, and that is very different from North Louisiana

I never hear any Texans say anything about "Everything's bigger in Texas". But it is really nice here.

Yeah or Georgia. For me its Tennessee because you have to go through it to get anywhere south from KY

It's really hard to say. I think Georgia because it's home but you could say Bama, Miss, Tenn, La, or SC because they are all apart of the deep south.

    Forest vs desert/high plains

more densly populated vs far less densly populated

many of the transplants are from other parts of the South, and particularly here in "deep" East Texas there are a lot of Louisiana transplants, like me

The major cities are just a blend of the rest of the world, it seems, and you're right, they are not "Southern" cities like I think of when I think of the cities in the "old" south.

I think Virginia and Indiana are southern states too that people don't consider. If you go there it's hard to disagree.

I consider MD and DE southern too.

Indiana is the midwest, but them and Ohio sure do their best impression of being a southern state

Virginia is definitely southern. Not only is south of the MD line, but a ton of Civil War history can be found there.

So is east TX considered more southern, whereas west TX is more southwest a la New Mexico/Arizona?

    Hmm...sounds fine to me

Big difference between people who yell "SEC" and hicks.

    Hicks don't go to college.

I meant less in terms of topography and more in terms of what's considered south vs southwest.

    in general, yes

though even in East Texas there is a lot of Mexican influence. Even the very smallest of towns will have a taqueria
