Not necessarily! I installed many off grid solar projects in Vermont with my old boss John's company called Central Vermont Solar and Wind. In fact, John has been living off the grid for over 30 years using wind and solar on a residential scale. Yes, he does burn fossil fuel in a generator during the winter to recharge his batteries, but its only a dozen gallons or so per year. His house is state of the art with a washing machine, freezer, computer, etc. His not sacrificing his comforts to rely mainly on renewables for electricity.
It all goes back to putting more resources into renewables so that we can ween away from fossil fuels. It's a slow process. Some people think oil is more dangerous than others, from a climate change point of view. From a pollution point of view, we should be moving in this direction anyhow. Cancer is a known outcome from many fossil fuels pollutants. Why pollute our water? Why breath shit air when we know things can be done differently/better?
