Love and Friendship was criminally underrated this year. I really recommend everyone watch it. Its on Amazon Prime.

Oh. Didn't realize it was a comedy.

    I read the description:

    Quote:
Lady Susan Vernon takes up temporary residence at her in-laws' estate and, while there, is determined to be a matchmaker for her daughter Frederica -- and herself too, naturally.
And my testicles shriveled up and crawled up inside my body.

Wait why does Arrival have a bad ending? The General Chang phone call was a little overly Hollywood, but the rest was great

Re: What was the last movie you watched?

It's amazing how 1986 got Picture and Director right, but every other major nominee wrong.

    How it was...

    Picture: Platoon (natch)
Actor: Paul Newman for Color of Money
Actress: Marlee Matlin for Children of a Lesser God
Supporting Actor: Michael Caine for Hannah and Her Sisters
Supporting Actress: Dianne Weist for Hannah and Her Sisters (two undeserved Oscars for Weist! Good for her!)
Director: Oliver Stone for Platoon (natch)

    How it should have been...

Actor: Bob Hoskins for Mona Lisa (See it. See it now. See it right now.)
    Actress: Sigourney Weaver for Aliens
Supporting Actor: Dennis Hopper for "Hoosiers" (He really got nominated for Blue Velvet and everyone knows it. Hard to nominate someone who is THAT fucked up though. Best villain ever.)
Supporting Actress: Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio for Color of Money

gah, Bob Hoskins was the man!

But Paul Newman is fantastic, and Color of Money DOES have that great Clapton song in the soundtrack...

Arrival - I loved it. Thought it to be one of the best movies I'd seen in a while. I love a good sci-if. I wasn't sure how long she had been seeing the future - I suppose that's a part of the mystery...

No idea. I'm equally as baffled as to how she won for Bullets Over Broadway instead of Uma for Pulp Fiction.

Director: Robert Zemeckis for Forrest Gump
    OG Screenplay: Pulp Fiction
    Adapted Screenplay: Forrest Gump
    Cinematography: Legends of the Fall
    Editing: Forrest Gump

    How it should have been...

    Picture: Pulp Fiction
Actor: Paul Newman for Nobody's Fool
Actress: Winona Ryder for Little Women
Supporting Actor: Samuel L. Jackson for Pulp Fiction
Supporting Actress: Uma Thurman for Pulp Fiction
Director: Robert Redford for Quiz Show
Original Screenplay: Pulp Fiction (no shit, it's only the most important one ever written)
    Adapted Screenplay: The Shawshank Redemption

Hell Or High Water is great, not overrated, mainly because besides being nominated for best picture, I haven't heard anyone talk about it for the most part. Besides some friends.

I think it was the only "prestige" movie a lot of people actually saw, so it got very highly touted

People in here were calling it great and amazing. Bridges performance was being touted as transcendent when all he really did was stuff some marbles in his mouth and sit in a chair mumbling for two hours.

It's a decent movie. Any praise beyond that, IMO, is overrating it.

Strongly disagree. At the risk of sounding like a tool , there was a ton of subtleties in Bridges' performance. Just little movements and gestures he did here and there that fleshed his character out way more than the script did.

I can't stand Tarantino. I see almost every movie he puts out because everyone hypes it and I just can't get into it.

Well looking at his filmography....I really enjoyed True Romance, Natural Born Killers, From Desk till Dawn. So maybe it is just the movies he directs

    Yeah... I don't think 07 comes close to 94. I mean,

    Pulp Fiction
    Shawshank Redemption
    Natural Born Killers
    Gump
    Lion King
    Dumb & Dumber

.... list just goes on and on

Yeah sounds like he just isn't for you. Pulp Fiction isn't overrated because you don't like Tarantino's style though.

No worries, 1994 was a great year as well. I just feel like I've seen lists stating that 1982 was the best year for movies ever.
