I use my placard constantly, because I run out of energy very quickly and the less I have to walk the more stuff I can actually do in a say. And if you see someone who's obese, don't be quick to judge them as having "no other handicap." A lot of people - myself included - are obese because of another health condition and so what you're seeing is essentially a secondary disability/health condition. I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis 15 years ago and between steroid treatments, increasing mobility difficulty (foot drag, muscle spasticity, etc), and the fact that the majority of restaurants that are actually accessible are fast food (so if I want to get dinner with friends that's often what we're stuck with), I've gained a lot of weight. Yes, I use a walker and so it's pretty damn obvious that there's something going on beside me being fat, but there are other people out there with similar backgrounds who are then being called lazy by ignorant people on the internet.
I'm sorry your father had a stroke, and I sincerely hope he's doing well. My 70-year-old father has Parkinson's and has a folding cane which he only brings out while commuting to ensure he can get a seat. It's so hard to watch our parents get sick, isn't it?
