I think it's a pretty subpar chorus as well...but does it really ruin every other element of the song for you?

C'mon guys, why is everyone so harsh on lyrics? There's a LOT of good songs with great lyrcis on the upcoming album. And it is a return to their original and best producer. BE EXCITED!

Ya know I feel the same way. Chorus is a little lackluster for me, but there's a lot about this song that I really like. The verse lyrics, guitar work, the horns after the first chorus, the bass breakdown, etc. Pretty dynamic song and while it's not my favorite of the bunch, I think it stands on its own as a pretty decent song.

. I like BBN, The Riff, and Mercy more than Gaucho, but it's still a solid tune. Had Dave nailed the chorus, it would be an incredible song. As it is though, solid stuff. Sometimes I feel like people who throw the word awful around truly don't remember 05-07 and the aftermath of Stand Up. Those were awful songs, and a much, much darker time for the band.

I wonder what rooftop's all about...Lillywhite said it's rockin' and may be alot of people's favorite...so does that mean it's another hunger, or does that mean its a more upbeat prog rock type deal...really no indidcation what its like and all jake said was its blahh

He didnt say it was blahhh, he said it didnt grab him right away. He also admitted songs like You Never Know also didnt grab him right away.

I agree. I like sweet a lot...the lyrics are great. Unlike some songs they actually play a huge role in how the song is experienced.. if you listen sweet is really quite sad.

But it's about his son learning to swim for two lines, and I'll ignore the overarching metaphor which is much more important to the song, so it bringz teh cheeeeze. And now I can still call Dave the awful lyricist he was on Stand Up.

I'm a huge fan of Sweet and its subtle solemnness intertwined with uplifting music...picked it to play at my mother-in-law's funeral in fact. This song kills me...so beautiful in my opinion.

The chorus doesn't ruin Gaucho for me,, no. I just don't like any of the lyrics really in the song. I like the kids, but they don't salvage it for me. It's all opinion though.

i didnt say it was good or bad. i said there is no potential for it to be any more than it is. the band doesn't even play on most of the song, and when they do, it is such an awkward transition. the tempo slows down so much and it just sounds like the song is going to fall apart. i don't know what they were thinking on leaving it how it is. i like the way the band sounds when they finally do come in, but it doesn't work with the rest of the song. they either need to be coming in MUCH earlier or not at all, because they way it is right now is a mess.

Gaucho just doesn't work for me. A middle of the road, OK song. The lyrics, the kids... I don't like these parts, but that's not why. It just doesn't hit with me.

I see Sweet getting some love. I like Sweet BECAUSE of the lyrics. I like If Only IN SPITE of the lyrics. ...mr cool?...

The Riff blows my mind every time I hear it.

Any hate for Sweet is so lame...

it's the situation where the song is short, simple, and basic, therefore, it's a bad song. Sweet is haunting, the lyrics are beautiful in the way they shift from reality to the pain of growing old, memory, and the implied impact of fatherhood - watching his son learn to swim while being sad/fearing old age.

It won't be a song that gets a jam or anything... but it's one of the best songs we have from this album. The Riff is better, and maybe Belly Belly. Gaucho is a little worse than Sweet, which is saying Gaucho is very good. Don't like If Only at all.

Sweet is probably my favorite song of the ones we've heard so far. I hope on the album it starts with just Dave then the band kicks in . Don't know why people wouldn't like Sweet, it even has some pretty cool lyrics especially if you take into perspective he wrote it for his baby (I believe?).
