Re: James Gunn's GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY For Marvel (8.1.14)

One thing I've always disliked about the Marvel movies is that they don't take themselves seriously enough and that they pander to young audiences. However, for some reason, I think that works better for this type of movie where the characters are completely unknown, even to people who may have read Marvel comics their whole life. I'll probably end up seeing this, simply because I'm getting sick of the Avengers lineup of movies they keep throwing at us. I don't find those characters compelling on the big screen at all, although it does still look cool to see live-action versions of heroes you've known since you were 6.

I was surprised to see John C. Reilly in that preview. Also, I wonder if Batista needed any CGI to fill out his frame or if that was purely his own muscle mass.

Know nothing about GotG but Marvel has been nailing it. I'm also a DC guy but have been loving the Marvel movies. Definitely got more of a comedy vibe out of the preview though. Looks like they're going more in the direction of Iron Man as far as comedy. A bit put off by the use of Tom Jones haha, but looks cool.

well, considering the totality of everything that seems to be happening in this movie, I'd probably technically refer to this as more of a full lengthed teaser trailer. We certainly get a good look at some stuff (after such a long wait), but from what I read there's still a shit ton of stuff we're yet to see. Like I think I said before, I'd guess we'll get 2 more full trailers for this by time of the release.

This is a good article giving background info on lots of stuff seen in the trailer

as far as tone and inspiration, I definitely hear you guys on the Fifth Element side. Two other titles I remember hearing from James Gunn himself over the last few months were Men In Black and Galaxy Quest.

Haven't seen the Avengers, was never really compelled (outside of Joss Whedon) to go and see it because I disliked the Marvel movies before. However, this movie looks really fucking good. I didn't know how I felt about the comedy in it, but ultimately it was the comedy that intrigued me.

so Guardians of course gets its own little section in EW mag's new Summer Preview issue, and James Gunn talks about quite a bit

    http://collider.com/thanos-guardians...xy-avengers-3/

Probably the biggest detail that I've been curious about for awhile is whether or not Thanos was going to be featured. I mean, it was clear a long time ago that Ronan The Accuser and The Collector were going to be the primary villains for it, but I'd thought Thanos was going to at least have a smaller supporting role (certainly more than a wink to the camera like after Avengers), seeing as how so much in the overall MCU is leading toward him. But at the same time, they're long since past the finish of the shoot, and we'd still not heard about a casting note yet? Hell it even seems forever ago we found out about Brad Cooper for the voice of Rocket Raccoon.

but so Thanos will be completely motion-capture. Though that by itself still doesn't mean necessarily if the part's been cast (although I would guess yes). Just saying, in some movies when a character has been all mo-cap, it's just a stunt guy actually on set with the dots on him, and the major actor does the voice work later. Although, Andy Serkis himself performed every facet of Gollum in the LOTR, so we just can't be sure.

I thought that Thanos is pretty much set to make his full onscreen arrival in Avengers 3?

Just hope they do that character justice, and make him a 100% threat to every superhero opposing him (Thor's hammer does nothing, Hulk smash is petty, Stark is overwhelmed, etc...)

Hopefully by then the Marvel contracts for Downey Jr. and Evans will be fulfilled, that way Thanos can kill some of the bigger characters.

well yea it's pretty safely assumed that Thanos will be the primary villain in Avengers 3, but that doesn't mean he can't show up and do some stuff even on the sidelines here in GOTG. There are two major characters in it who are directly related to him, after all (Gamora on the side of the "good guys", and Nebula on the "bad").

I don't think it's going to flop but I don't think it's going to be a big of a hit as Avengers, and there really is no reason to compare it to Avengers money. But Marvel is on a streak with movie fans, so regardless if people are familiar with it or not, they will go and check it out due to the name backing it.

I don't think it'll flop but it won't be a box office wonder. It's got Marvel on the title, so it's gonna sell. I'll be honest, if it wasn't part of the Marvel universe I might skip it but knowing that it ties in with the overall story Marvel is creating, I want to see it.

I wasn't aware that it was supposed to be.

I see where you're coming from, but that's really an unfair comparison. This movie is a necessity for the storyline they've chosen to play out for the rest of the marvel plotlines...it making a lot of money would be nice, but they're going to recoup it (and then some) with the future movies its allowing for.

I actually think it has the potential to be a hit. Marvel has a very solid history in marketing their movies. It certainly COULD tank, but like everyone else says, I doubt it will.

This is such awesome news, I think. Marvel had had the role of the ultimate big baddie of their MCU, Thanos, cast for awhile, but they weren't breaking it yet. Well now it's officially known -- Thanos will be played by Josh Brolin.

    http://www.aintitcool.com/node/67511

He'll have a relatively small, supporting role here in GOTG (Ronan and the Collector will still be the primarily villains for this, but Thanos actually has time on screen and lines for this one, far more than a smile at the very end), and it's pretty much assumed he'll be the main bad guy in Avengers 3.

plus, thanks to my time from working for Paul Verhoeven and the one reshoot day on Hollow Man, now I can say that I've hung out with Thanos
