I don't think my excitement for this movie could be more thru the roof by now. In fact I really need to start trying to reign in it so it's not to an impossible level.

A newer extended (1:00) TV spot with fresh footage, and using another of the songs from Peter Quill's mixed tape.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xq4ovWO6HcU

Generally I'm against 3D just on principle, but after reading some of what James Gunn has had to say about the way he's used it for this movie (you know it was definitely a mandate from the studio anyway), I think I am going to check this out in the 3D format, it seems like it'll genuinely be a different experience.

Having said that, even if I could have gotten one of the free tickets, I don't think I'd want to see that 17 minute IMAX 3D preview they're doing in some cities on July 7th. If I'm going to see that much of a movie at once, I wanna see the whole thing.

I normally do the midnight too, especially since I have off in the summers, but the movie theater is 40 minutes away and I can do errands on the way that I wouldn't be able to do on the way to the midnight showing. Plus, the wife gets cranky at night, like a gremlin after midnight

I thought when they did these "night before" screenings of big movies that it was only at midnight, but obviously not. Is it still the same ticket price that if you see it at like 8 on Friday night?

This has now officially broken Fandango's all time record for pre-sales tickets for an August movie. Apparently the overall box office record for August is The Bourne Ultimatum at about $70M, they think this can maybe break that.

Please forgive me, I'm honestly not sure if you're meaning sarcasm with that or not.

were the screenings you guys were all in totally packed? oh and in these "preview screenings", do they still show you like a half dozen trailers up front?

Re: James Gunn's GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY For Marvel (8.1.14)

I initially scoffed and rolled my eyes when I read reviews drawing comparisons between Guardians of the Galaxy and cinematic treasures like Raiders of the Lost Ark and Star Wars. It's so easy to write something off when those are the genre benchmarks and you've become increasingly cynical, not only with age but also with how many times you've seen other supposed instant classics not live up to the hype.

Believe the hype. Marvel Studios has outdone itself. Its triumphant risk in turning such a relatively obscure property into the next billion dollar franchise transcends dollars and cents. A new generation of fandom has been created, and for the first time in a long time (maybe ever), I was enviously transported into the dark theater seat of a geeky 80s teenager watching cultural significance unfold on the screen before him.

Disclaimer: I've read Guardians of the Galaxy and followed their uproarious and page-turning exploits. The movie is a living, breathing comic book. It's the perfect embodiment of its absurd source material. It's the best adaptation ever in that sense. But it's not for everyone. Nothing is. The bevy of humor and pop cultural references scattered throughout the movie aren't confined to the silver screen. They also pop off the page. And they'll miss the mark for some. But they're right up my trivial alley.

Where do I begin? Star-Lord is Han Solo. He's Indiana Jones. His false bravado expertly disguises his heart of gold. So I guess Chris Pratt is Harrison Ford? He has this amazingly endearing presence that will define his expectedly illustrious film career. Rocket Racoon is a furious ferret with a Napoleon complex. But like the movie and its motley crew of a cast, he's got spunk. Groot grounds him like the tree that he is and steals every scene he's afforded. Gamora and Drax are muscle with funny bones. The villains, while generically motivated, are anything but ordinary. The effects are flat-out extraordinary. The writing will have you fist pumping one moment and reverently rolling your eyes the next.

And unlike most movies, the soundtrack enhances the entire experience. Songs were explicitly written into the script. They're plot points, not just background noise. Comedy, drama, romance, action…there's something for everybody and anybody. The galaxy depicted is diverse like that, why should its guardians be any different?
