Dark Side of the Moon - 42:59 and is CONSTANTLY mentioned as one of the best albums of all time (THE best IMO)

Re: Progress updates - Stay on topic!

I was a tad bit disappointed to hear 55 minutes, but I liked Big Whiskey so it seems about right. I think Lillywhite may have been a little more prone to let Dave and crew create the album they really wanted to make, instead of forcing his hand too much like he may have before. From what I've gathered from interviews and stuff, LW really seems to think of albums as a large part of his creation, where Dave and the others may have been a little upset that he was such a control freak. Dave said Big Whiskey was the first album he really felt he had control over, and the others were like turning in work. But I guess my main point is, they probably aren't in that place where they want to write epic, brooding 7-8 minute songs anymore. I think most people were initially turned off by BTCS' length anyways. Quality over quantity, hopefully. And here's hoping that this marks the beginning of a DMB-Lillywhite run again!

Rashawn is the only guest vocalist. He does play trumpet on the album (he stated as much in those videos he did with David Monette).

But I can't help but wonder if he is letting more out now because the secrecy doesn't matter as much any more because we are close to some type of formal announcement.

Also, I find it outrageous that somebody wishes Dave was in a darker place. There is no reason to wish unhappiness on a person, especially a person that we all like and by all indications is a decent human being. Come on, grow up.
I agree 100% with this. He is letting out some good info, but nothing that would compromise anything that management would announce.

Also, I enjoy Dave's darker songs as much as anyone, but I certainly don't want him to have to live through anything so dark and melancholy in order to produce songs like that. If that's what has to happen for him to write a song like that, then I can take what he has already given us, and more so hope that he is in a good state.

Hey can anyone link me to a direct tweet from Lillywhite. Anyone will do really. For whatever reason I can't get on at work unless I have a direct tweet link.

Very well put. Most people assume only the dark songs can be complex, which in the past few years has tended to be true, but I believe Lillywhite's big strength in this album is going to be producing more traditional songs with a little extra flair which DMB is famous for.

I think this album will be a "poppier" version of what we've seen in the past. I'm expecting a "Crash" type feel.

The only thing I have low expectations for are the lyrics. But I don't care about lyrics, vocal delivery is what matters to me, and Dave usually tends to come through in a cool way. "Mercy" has generic, recycled lyrics, but I will promise you there will be an extra flair in that song when we hear the full band version. It's actually quite a good melody.

Maybe they will do 8 songs at 7 minutes a pop

Totally agree with you here. I have seriously dropped my expectations for the lyrics on this album. I expect they will be poor at best, with 2-3 songs that will be almost completely ruined by garbage, cheesy, and cliche lyrics about bumpin and grindin or about changing the world.

from lillywhite's tweet, my guess is 11 tracks, with one over 8 mins, one at 2 mins and a couple at 6+ mins. The rest will be more the 3.5-5.5 min range.

It's been the same since 2008. That has held true atleast one time in that span. Chances are you can't say the same.

my expectations were way too sky-high since Lillywhite came on anyway...back down to earth now. This album will be nothing more than BWGGK's bastard child.

Well here's to a complete 180 for you when the album is released! I believe that the lyrics will be good, not great, although I'm not really one who decides if a song is good based on the lyrics and don't really care too much about them. I'm more about the music and overall sound of a song.
If you look at all of Dave's lyrics, UTTAD to now, it's almost like a story. I'm not going to bore you with a long detail, but he starts off with songs such as BOWA where he is like a kid enjoying his life, stays upbeat with Crash (almost like a teenager with spying on his neighbor and driving cars (DIDO)), goes into a dark place, and then comes out of that dark place eventually and writes more upbeat songs. I believe that his lyrics come from where he is at in life at the time he writes them.

@Sillywhite How did you enjoy working with Jeff Coffin on this #DMB album? Does he play lots of different types of Sax's? flute or penny?

Relax. Enjoy an adult beverage. The sun will rise tomorrow. The next song we hear could be really good. The band could (and should) sound great on the album. If not, well, the sun will still rise tomorrow.

Come on man, just because one songs lyrics rubbed you the wrong way doesn't mean you have to think everything will let you down!

those are good thoughts...and I am with you that lyrics are secondary. I much more focus on the sound, the music and structure first and foremost. However, if the lyrics are bad...really bad, the song is ruined for me and I can't listen.

    Examples:

    Angel
    I Did It
    Smooth Rider
    Dive In
    You and Me
    Stand Up (for it)

that's just off the top of my head...

it's not one song!!! it's a pattern that Dave obviously can't shake! proof positive that the creative well (lyrically speaking) has run completely dry!

I think expecting every word of every song to be perfect is just setting yourself up for disappointment. Not every song can be a great allegory or shrouded in cryptic metaphor that leaves us guessing at the song's meaning for a decade. The older stuff doesn't even live up to that standard, as people point out a lot.

There is recent evidence that Dave's "well" is not completely dry. Think about LITHOG, now that we know that song is about smoking, it really makes the lyrics pretty awesome. If the lyrics were really cheesy and/or overly repetitive, I think Lillywhite would be honest to Dave about it.

    Examples:

    Angel
    I Did It
    Smooth Rider
    Dive In
    You and Me
    Stand Up (for it)

that's just off the top of my head...
Well honestly the lyrics for Mercy are no where near these. They are more on par with a big eyed fish or You never know.
