I don't have a tripod yet. I've been shooting a lot of handheld shutter stuff. Too long really. 1/6, 1/4... Pentax has body IS which is awesome but I still need to get a tripod. Or, actually, a monopod. Whatever's smallest. And cheap. But actually works.

I made a print of my favorite night exposure (attached) but we made it darker in the print because it looked too bright. WRONG. The picture looks WAY better in the file. I'm kinda pissed. Same lab did a good job cropping the landscape (also attached) they tweaked the color in the sky SLIGHTLY. It came out real well. Pissed about the nite exp though. Its all wrong on my wall. And its perfect here (on my computer)

Anyone ever have a similar problem? Lab just adjust your picture and its not right anymore? Mine is just so dark, it got destroyed by making it darker. It was ALREADY PEFECT! haha
drop everything and get a tripod right now! search ebay, you can get one cheap and you won't believe how worth it it is. The first pic is awesome, but would be 100x better with a tripod. Also, if possible search ebay for a remote trigger for your camera. It also makes a huge difference.

My first shot had a 5 second shutter. I've read that 5 seconds is the sweet spot. Anything over 5 seconds and movement gets blurred out to nothing and colors start to loose their pop (generally speaking). My second pic was much shorter, aprox a sec, but I was shooting in aperture priority so I'm not sure exactly.

I really enjoy looking at all the great photographs in this thread. Some of them are just purely amazing.

here's a very amateur photo of my dog checking out her first real snow.

to the tripod advice. If you don't get a remote trigger, you can use the camera's built in timer to avoid the movement of you pushing the shutter button.

Here are some pics of mine:

Just bought a manfrotto and infrared remote trigger.

55 dollars well spent I hope.

And yes, its a mini tripod. I WILL use a tripod. I draw the line at one I have to lug around though. I'd rather have one with me all the time that I actually use than one that I bring EVERYWHERE...

I like it panned out... So I might like the third even more than the second. I like the wider skyline AND the cool sky exposure.

First one is still a bit blah to me. Second and third are pretty awesome though.

Apparently everyone here is ANTI anything manipulative... so, stay silent if you must. But is that sky natural or polarized?

Also, people should look into polarizers. There are a lot of hazy skies... Thats the next thing I have to buy. It takes away glare, reflections, haze. Makes everything bright. (I WAS big into photography about 4-5 yrs ago, but stopped and am just getting back in, now, been about 6 months back now)

I did not use a polarizer, and don't even own one. I need to look into them. I've heard they are great for skys.

used a tripod, f3.8, shutter 1 sec, ISO 200. The only editing I did was minor adjustment to sharpening, curves, and levels.

Depends. What's your budget? Carbon fiber or aluminum? How tall are you? Are you a serious photographer or do you just want any set of legs?

If you get a decent tripod, you'll need a ballhead and a camera plate for each camera you use. Feisol (www.reallybigcameras.com) has inexpensive but high rated tripods. I haven't seen a negative review anywhere about them. You can get their standard carbon fiber tripod for $215.

DO NOT buy a tripod that has a brace between the 3 legs. You want your legs to be as movable as possible (Think about setting it up on jagged rocks or an embankment). My current tripod is like this and it greatly limits the shots I can get. I'm going to upgrade to the Feisol 3371 since I'm 6"2. My height alone eliminates a lot of great tripods.

Why is height important? You want a tripod that sets the camera eye AT your eye level (or just below). If it's too low you'll be bending over all the time to adjust composition and you'll be very uncomfortable, which is not something you want while you're trying to enjoy your hobby. Read this for a bit more detail: http://www.nikonians.org/html/resour...tripods_1.html

Thom Hogan has a great article regarding tripods and why it's important to buy the best you can the first time. There is probably not another item you will depend on more than a good tripod. If you are able to buy top of the line you'll never have to buy a tripod again. I just can't fathom people who drop thousands on camera gear and pro lenses only to squabble over a few hundred dollars when it comes to support. Consider it an investment. http://www.bythom.com/support.htm

I know that might be a lot but it really is an important decision and you want a tripod that fits your needs and most importantly your budget.

Wait... why not just get a manfrotto? they're cheaper than that. most of the manfrotto's are between 100-200...

I just got a small cheap one... Good quality though. I'm going to set up on things. I'm not going to drag a 15 pound stick around with me. I'm just not...

I read his article. I gotta say, its very enlightening. But his conclusion seems to be one that is purely for professional nature photographers.

For amateurs it seems like a bit overkill. If I ever HAVE to shoot a telephoto for longish exposures I'll go get one of my professional friends and rent/borrow their equipment. A tripod that is 50% cheaper is 100% effective in 99% of the situations I would ever shoot.

^^ I have to agree. I got my tripod for 30 bucks at target. its not the greatest, but does the job. I will prob invest in a better tripod soon, but the average novice shooter should just get a cheap one to get comfortable using one. It will still make a world's difference in night shots.

The Feisol 3301 is 2.59 lbs. That's pretty light if you ask me. Not sure where you're getting 15lbs from.

I want to buy a tripod that will last me many many years. So I want to buy the right one the first time. I have a cheapo Haikuba but it's flimsy, aluminum, has a terrible ballhead, a brace b/w the legs, and is way too short for me. I got it as a present before I really knew what I wanted and needed.

As I said before, it's important to assess your needs and budget when purchasing a tripod. Are you carrying it in and out of your car in the city or are you hiking for miles in the woods? Are you shooting in rough terrain with high winds or the local park?

It all comes down to what you need and can afford.

But yes, by all means you do need a tripod.

Thanks for all the tripod responses... I'm still lost, but this will give me more to consider.

The bummer is that I probably won't know exactly what I want in a tripod until I've already bought one that has some flaws... One reason I'm considering just getting a cheapo one just to know what I'm looking for when I get a nicer one.

    We'll see...

I don't know if anyone else has ever used these, but I'm currently watching the Lydia.com - Camera Raw course taught by Chris Orwig and I've got the Lightroom one to watch once I'm done.

I'm not super far into it, but it's great to speed up familiarity with Photoshop and it's components if you don't know anything about them.

I like the Domke canvas camera bags because they don't scream "EXPENSIVE CAMERA GEAR INSIDE!!!"

While I understand why you would want a very plain camera bag, they still look like camera bags and any thief is going to try and steal it if they get the chance.

Anyone ever use one of these babies? http://www.blackrapid.com/rs4.php

    This is what I use:
    http://www.anestore.com/muchmall/ima...domke/fxxb.jpg

It's big enough to hold 1 SLR with lens attached and another lens plus accessories (batteries, film, filters, etc). Nothing about it screams camera bag, at least to me. I use it more as a walk around bag when I'm in a public place (Park, city streets, etc) and it holds what I need.

Their larger bags definately say camera though. But to me it's better to say Domke than NIKON. Don't even want to tempt would be thieves.

    I have this one:

    http://products.lowepro.com/product/...60,1942,22.htm

Fits my 400D, my 2 lenses, memory cards, batteries and battery grip when I have it fitted onto the camera.
