He isn't ready, but William Byron should be groomed for the 88 job eventually. Then let Jimmie drive the 48 until he's ready to go out on his own terms.
The Gibbs dynamic is the most interesting. Kenseth is going to be forced out again just like he was with Roush. He's still more than capable of winning races, but Gibbs will have to look toward landing a permanent option for Erik Jones. That second Furniture Row team he'll be racing for next year won't be enough. That doesn't even take into account the additional young talent in the Gibbs association. No one has a better developmental program.

its definitely going to be interesting to see what happens over the next 2-3 years or so with so many older drivers on the verge of retirement and so many young guys coming up.
i don't see kahne sticking around hendrick either. just one of those guys who couldn't put it all together consistently, which is a shame. i think junior will be back full force next season. this season is a wash at this point, so just take time to get 100% and then come back. concussions are tough. they can be better in a week or still cause problems a year and a half later. but dale seems to be progressing, which is good. jimmie i'm sure has a deal like gordon where he has a seat until he decides not to race anymore. having chase and kyle as the heirs to the hendrick thrown with jimmie their to guide them would set up hendrick for another decade.
what you brought up about gibbs is interesting. furniture row has been talking about a 2nd team for a while, so this 2nd ride is going to stick around past next season. if kenseth does get the boot from gibbs, do they basically make a trade with him and jones? getting a guy like kenseth would be huge for furniture row, similar to the season they had busch. they could get a few years of a solid older driver who can still win and help develop truex further. and it would give matt some stability in his last few years.
