2018 Mindset

This spun off a discussion in ndmbc, and wanted to see how people view things going forward.

Its not secret theres been lots of reports of hits dropped by boyd, carter etc that the band will be playing again next year at some point.

The band is in uncharted waters right now, so i'm viewing things going one of two ways through and after the next time they tour..

1. They feel rejuvenated and either finish up a new album and start taking more risks on stage etc.

2. They realize this thing has really worn down, and theres not much juice left to it and we start heading towards the end of the band as we know it.

Just wanted to get a feel for what the rest of the community thinks about this

    Re: 2018 Mindset

Absolutely nothing has indicated that the end of the band is near.... now they obviously don't have 20 years left in them but if they can reduce the touring schedule to 25-30 shows a year, there is no reason to believe they can't tour for awhile starting in 2018.

Seeing band members together randomly this year on social media shows they still have plenty of love and admiration for each other. They have played together at random shows and even Carter and Jeff have another outing this fall. Rashawn already guested with Dave and Tim at Jazz Fest.

Everything looks as if this was a great year to step away as a full band and be ready to go next year

I agree nothing has indicated it. But you never know how things can change when they get back to touring having seen what life can be without it.

Wasnt trying to be gloom and doom here at all. I just think its possible they could realize they are happier with the freedom to do what they want in the summer.

I just really hope when they come back the tour isnt more than 25-30 shows like you said.

I think they'll be rejuvenated and they'll go out every night and play songs they want to play. Whether than means risks or not it's impossible to say now, but I'd definitely lean towards yes. I don't think it's any question that these guys enjoy playing together.

I could see them finishing up the album they've been working on. Would love (and not be surprised) to see them jump in the studio for a period of time in the spring.

This thread will be full of people saying they're going to bail, that they hate each other and that Dave is lazy. But, while I have been frustrated at times with sets, I think all that talk is a gross exaggeration. These have been playing together nearly half their lives. Fully expect them to take some risks

I don't think anything will change. 2018 will sound a lot like 2017. The same songs you've heard will be played.

That being said, I'm excited to get back on the road next summer. This summer off was a bummer, and I missed D&T shows due to the flood wrecking my house. So I'm ready to get back at it next year.

They will come out energized and put on great shows, but they aren't going to suddenly become the band that many on here want them to be. I can see a few rare songs being in rotation for the tour and some nice surprises, but nothing crazy. I'm personally very excited/hopeful for a return to Alpine in 2018.

After two shows there will be threads complaining that they haven't played You Never Know and the end is near.

I have a feeling we'll see some smaller summer tours. I think the days of 30-40 shows are probably either done, or dwindling. Maybe a 15-20 show tour, some international dates. Some rare songs will pop up and then inexplicably disappear. Don't think a new album is on its way, and that's probably for the best

I also think that when the band is done, whenever that is, that Dave will continue to tour and make music. Whether that's with Timmy, as a solo act, or a new D&F type thing; I don't know

I just want to see sets more like the D&T sets we saw this year. That would appease 95% of people.

They hit spikes last year with shows like SPAC and Deer Creek.. I just want to see more of that and less of the lull/down periods between those shows.

2013 sets were really pretty diverse too. I did 4 shows and all were completely different than each other. I think diversity is key. The surprise element made seeing a song like STD Her interesting and exciting for me (though I can't say it helped that much when it went right into Hunger, despite that being a liberation)

Yes please. The Camden n2 show is still the best show I have ever witnessed.

I'd like to see them scale back in one way or another. Maybe they still play the same number of dates just in smaller venues. Or they play less dates in larger venues. Would that suck for a majority of the fanbase? Probably. But if they go out and play setlists in 2018 like D&T did this year that could create a demand for tickets.

That and an album that has a hit.

Love that Pittsburgh show. Could have done with out a Shake me encore but doesn't look that bad after a full Recently Jam. JTR and What You Are are on my most wanted list with Cry Freedom and Dreaming Tree.

Of course, like everyone else I want DMB to tour as long as possible...Every year prior to this one, I was still living with my parents getting through college. There wasn't much money lying around for me to spend on following a tour. Still, I'd save up all year and was able to see 11 shows from the time I was 17-22 years old.

Now, I'm a newly independent adult with a decent amount of disposable income and I'm dying to have an all out DMB summer like many of you have enjoyed for years. I NEED atleast another 7-10 more years of touring!

I have to say though I'm a little worried. Not in the faith of the band members themselves, but in the actual members capability to keep this kind of performance up for another 10 years.

Carter is 59. Can he really play with this kind of energy and intensity into his late 60's? Apparently Boyd has terrible arthritis/carpal tunnel and tim is going on 60...I'm not saying it can't happen, but I'm nervous.

If this band shuts down I seriously don't know what I would do

Or they could do the opposite and pull a 2009 touring year....

April 2018: Return to the stage for a 2-3 week spring tour. Opening at Madison Square Garden

June-2018: Album release show and US Tour

July 2018- Europe tour for 2-3 weeks then West Palm Beach

September 2018: West coast dates and Gorge

I'd be down for this as well. That would be a shit load of dates overall though.

Charlie Watts (Stones), Frank Beard (ZZ Top), Don Henley (Eagles), Joey Kramer (Aerosmith), lots of older drummers still active.

He may not be able to play with the same intensity, but no reason Carter won't continue playing.

I dont see this happening at all. We wouldve heard studio rumblings.

Frankly I dont want them to tour that much.

    Re: 2018 Mindset

I agree with everyone that is calling for an album. I would love to see them bring it with a big album again. I am okay just sitting back and seeing how it goes. I will always go to my one PNC show a year. Next year I may make the trip to Gorge finally as well. Depends a lot on what other bands are doing too though. If Dead and Co are touring I may travel a bit for them.

My dream is two nights of d&c at gorge followed by 3 nights of dmb

He may not be able to play with the same intensity, but no reason Carter won't continue playing.
    let's not forget mighty Max!

    Re: 2018 Mindset

2 scenarios I'd like to see

1: new album in the works

Full band Mexico in February and this rejuvenates the creative process. They get in the studio for most of March and April and finish up/start some new tunes

    May-Labor Day
30 show US Tour with diverse sets highlighted by the new tunes

Finish album in October for a 2019 Q1 release and spring tour supporting it.

    2: no new album

    Full band in Mexico February

    May-Labor Day
30 show US Tour similar to 2013

    Nov-Dec
10 show east coast winter tour
