Re: Fall 1998 v Summer 2000

Everyone who followed the band knew by those first 2 Polaris shows that the new songs were incredible.

Also, fall 98 was on the heels of new material coming out. Most of the Audience probably never knew what stone, last stop or spoon was either

Same goes for now, the band should really cater to those who invest time and effort into them. Who cares about those who go for the drugs and booze

I'm not going to split hairs on what people thought of the new songs in 2000 (it wasn't universal praise) but the amount of people who downloaded and listened to the songs prior to shows was, we can agree, not the majority audience.

Last Stop, Dreaming Tree, Pig, Stone and Spoon weren't played every night of 1998 tour. In fact, in the 2 Fall '98 shows I went to only Last Stop was played. Crush was played everynight - it was a party when they played it. Same with PNP=>Rapunzel. And DDTW and Stay. And anything from Crash or UTTAD.

The band seems to cater to themselves these days, which is fine and to be expected 25+ years in.

My first show was in 2000, and that first show I got hooked on everything that's great live about DMB. Fall 98 looked awesome as well, but the outdoor venue / tailgating aspect needs to be considered as well.

There's a unique, slowed down, mellowed groove to DMB in 2000/2001 that's just unmatched from any other era, despite the sets.

When BTCS came out there was bitching about it being a little too hard(last stop & ddtw). Atleast in my circles.

The 2000 songs were liked immediately. People weren't even entirely sure of the song names but they were already liked. "that grey song" or the one with dave whailing(bartender) are still memorable. Raven being the only rough sounding one.

1998 for me, but 2000 was a great tour. 1998 was my first show and it was a great night. Cool question.

No doubt, Summer of '98 had people not liking a lot of BTCS. I remember everyone loving Crush and Rapunzel by Fall of '98 and specifically hating the frequency of DDTW. Last Stop and Stone were both liked by the Fall, Stay was a nice midset song by that point.

In 2000, I remember people not liking Diggin a Ditch specifically. I remember people being split on JTR because they got rid of the refrain from when it was called "John The Revelator". Also, split on Bartender - don't think the wailing we know today was there in 2000. Sweet Up and Down was seen as a rehash but a fun one. I agree, though, that Grey Street was loved.

Very true about Digging a Ditch, forgot about it. But as for Bartender, the wailing was definitely there. Atleast at the shows i was at, Deer Creek & Denver.

Thank you for also getting it. It seems like far too many people who have probably never been in a band, want to tell this band how to conduct themselves. Such a joke.

Just listened to the 6/22/00 Bartender. There is actually way more wailing than the versions of current day.

Special times then. 2000 they were just so creative and in control of their space. 3.0 can get there but it might take longer due to space allotted ÷ members.
