Alright CT people i need some help. As a 21 year old kid i finally have my moms blessings to get beers (probably a few growlers) of some beers around the new haven area for our christmas dinner. Obviously NEBCO will be my first stop but where else are there cant miss beers at our local breweries. Looking near Cheshire. Or even some great new bombers out for the holiday season.

    Favorite beer of choice?

A buddy of mine recommends OEC and Tree House. Not sure where those are but he is in CT so can't be too far away.

Two Roads in Stratford has awesome beer (and I'm not just saying that because my uncle is the head brewmaster there )

If you're looking for something in the season, their Holiday Ale is amazing. Something lighter but still hoppy would be their Lil' Heaven IPA.

Their brewery doesn't serve food, so I'm not sure if you were intending to go there for a meal, just eat before you go. But, the brewery is in an old industrial manufacturing building, so it's really a cool place to go visually. They saved a lot of the wood and made their bar and tables out of it. It really is just a cool spot to visit.

Does anybody in here use a non glass growler? I'm thinking about getting myself a stainless steel growler but I would love some input.

I use a stainless growler all the time. Really nice as you don't have to worry about it breaking.

Just cracked my first Cascade. Kriek. This is awesome stuff. Worth the $$$? Probably not quite. The bottle says 2013 project...anyone know if this means it was started in 2013 or bottled in 2013?

Yeah Cascade is pricey but for the most part I've enjoyed them. The Bourbonic Plague has one of the greatest beer names of all time but was just too weird for me. Now that they can't sell online the sticker price is like $45 too. I haven't had apricot but the fruit beers I have tried of theirs are pretty solid!

    Re: Favorite beer of choice?

Had a lot of great beer this weekend....

    1. Maine Lunch & Another One - Got 32 oz growlers of these at my local shop's Maine Brewing Co. tap takeover on Friday. Maine kills it IMO and both of these brews are wonderful examples of a well done IPA. I also tried a sample of their Mean Old Tom (vanilla stout) run through a Randall filled with coffee beans! It was awesome, but I had only brought two growlers along so had to go with the above mentioned.

2.) Troegs Mad Elf Ale - same bottle shop wound up putting this on tap Saturday afternoon and running it through a Randall filled with brandy soaked cherries. Wow, this was delicious....I had no trouble at all smashing a 32 oz growler in one sitting.

I also picked up some Off Color Dino Smores, which at a little over $20 for a 4 pack, is an expensive brew, but it also is pretty much a s'more in a bottle. Had it on tap last March and loved it, so can't wait to crack some bottles over the Holiday break.

Speaking of the Holidays, anyone on here plan on cracking something special for Xmas Eve? Xmas Day? New year's? I should be getting growlers of Corsendonk Christmas and St. Bernadus Xmas this week to crack on Christmas Day. Also have a bomber of 2011 Troegs Mad Elf, The Bruery 4 Calling Birds, The Bruery 7 Swans a Swimming, several vintages of Goose Island Bourbon County, and hopefully some Terrapin French Toasted Wake n Bake if it hits my local bottle shops at some point next week!

    Cheers,
    Scott

OEC is in Oxford, I was there for their latest bottle release Saturday. Currently I'd say it's the sleeper brewery in the state, fantastic sour/wild ale project backed by B United which has added some great imports into the state. They have holiday hours in effect so check their site, normally they are only open on Saturdays.

Tree House is in Monson, Mass; not far over the border and a nice ride but not CT. Limited brews and limited hours, so check the site but you'll be happy with whatever you do end up with.

NEBCo recently tweaked their recipes to Gandhi-Bot and Sea Hag so dropping by the brewery is a good idea just don't try if you're pressed for time and also check their FB for what's on tap.

If you feel like making the trip, Beer'd Brewing in Stonington is making the best beer in the state as far as standard styles are concerned. They also have some holiday hours in effect.

Phil's a good guy, he actually came in to my work asking some HVAC questions. The Two Roads tasting room is definitely a cool place to hang, lots of room, full pints and a food truck schedule. Also, due to Two Roads basically state of the art facility, you can now find Lawson's Sip of Sunshine on tap and canned throughout the state.

Any other CT brew questions feel free to ask, we're pretty far behind the national curve but we're gettin' there.

How recently did NEBCo tweak Gandhi-Bot? I had a couple cans about a week after black friday and I absolutely thought it was on point. I actually enjoyed those two cans much more than I had when I tried GB initially a year or so ago.

From what I know a few weeks ago, so most likely what is currently being canned; the reviews were based on draft discussions. I would gather your cans were a bit more toward the sweet side, which is what I've found with the last tweak and coupled with their distro snafus really started turning me off. Sea Hag had been spot-on but it seems NEBCo is leaning toward the 'juicy' IPA trend, GBs bitterest days are behind us I'd say. Not a huge fan of tweaking a flag-ship but sure as hell ain't my choice.

Funnily, I really dug my local's (Thimble Island) IPA which started as a really bitter offering. Then, suddenly the edge was taken off... I asked the brewmaster what he changed and he looked at me a bit surprised. Seems they use Falconer's Flight in the hop bill, which had been altered with their last batch. They've stuck with the current profile and I'd say it was an improvement.

I loved the old GB - and if it's even "juicier" now?!?!? Damn, I can't wait to try that!

I asked the brewmaster what he changed and he looked at me a bit surprised. Seems they use Falconer's Flight in the hop bill, which had been altered with their last batch. They've stuck with the current profile and I'd say it was an improvement.
I actually thought it was more bitter than I remembered it to be....it was freaking delicious. maybe some tropical sweetness but it more on the bitter side and I loved it....it was probably the freshest stuff I've had from them as well though...likely less than a week in the can.

Review was from a growler filled Friday and my last bar draft exposure was about a week before. I would peg the tweak to be between that time. I would have liked to have personally tried the growler but my brother drank the entire thing. GB has been in short supply since their expansion, for a few reasons.

it's very possible that the simple explanation for me enjoying it as much as I did was just due to freshness....

I'll have to see if I can scrounge some up for the holiday. I had three packs of Heady and a fresh bomber of Racer 5 dropped at my doorstep last night.

it also might have tasted better because I was using proper gandhi bot glassware!
