Jiffy Lube Live (06-16-12)

Kind of a meh show on paper, but after not seeing the guys since 2010, I was glad I went and had a really good time. Das` review

Seven: Meh, people in the lawn liked it, its sort of middle of the road BW for me, I can take it or leave it

Eh hee: Man, I really don't like this song. Upbeat and all, but I just can't get into it. Kinda bummed we got it, but other people liked it and it got them dancing so its fine

PM: I love PM. I hate that it always segued all the time, but man its awesome. Definitely a high for me tonight

Satellite: Ugh, Definitely not my favorite. It ruins PM and doesn't do anything for me at all. Owell, the g/f liked it so I can't complain

SDL: LOVE sdl. So glad we got this, I know its not exactly high on everyones 'to see' list, but I like it a lot. Guys sounded great too.

Mercy: First time hearing this I I like it so far. Didn't really know what I was hearing at first, but as it went, seemed fairly chill, definitely some room for improvement though.

So Right: nice! definitely pulled the crowd out of the lull we were all in. I like SR, glad we got it, got the lawn going again.

Sweet: Got this D&T last year, I like it, but man, snoozefest...

Jimi Thing: Always enjoy a good Jimi Thing, but after seeing this at almost every show ive been to, I could definitely used something else here. Crowd loved it though, and the band sounded great

Spaceman: I like spaceman, but ive gotten it too much and could really have used something else at this point.

Cornbread: VaBeach gets Fishtender, we get Spacebread. Enough said

If Only: Not bad, gets a little repetitive but glad I heard it first hand. Slight potential for a good tune here

R&R: Yea!!!!! Love R&R, I was going crazy at this point, just glad to hear something I actually wanted to hear. some casual fans I came with had no idea what was going on, kinda brought my mood down, but great version none the less.

Gaucho: Really like gaucho and glad I heard it, but once again, I was hoping for something older or at least well known, lawn was in a saze for this whole tune

WWYS: This one got people crankin again. First time hearing it, loved every bit of it, made for a good couple minutes

DDTW: Always solid, I never mind hearing it. Was hoping we would get something else to close, but no complaints. band seemed into it and the crowd around me was crazy

Warehouse: Personally for me, its what made the night worth it. my favorite DMB tune and a complete surprise at E1. I was going nuts, everyone else was too, literally they could have played nothing better in this slot. Awesome

Grey St.: Another good one, but I have gotten it a large number of times before. Once again, i was kind of hoping for something else to close, but no complaints.

All in all, it was a very 'comfortable' show. Definitely not what I was expecting for having a few days off and coming back to VA, but it was fun regardless. So many Newbs complaining about the traffic, but we came back and cranked the grill up for some post' show brats and burgers.

Basically, the people who can take it for what it is had a good time. It was a very basic show, shitty casual fans, and terrible parking. If these things really bother you, im sure you had a shitty time. Im used to them by now (this being my home venue) so it wasn't really a big deal, I just hope people can see through some of the shittiness and enjoy themselves.

P.S. The tailgate was fuckin awesome. I never expected that many people to show up, and damn was it fun. Good food, some good beers, and great people. Honestly, its gatherings like that that help remind you that there are some good people on these forms and the good people far out-weight the shitheads.

Re: Jiffy Lube Live (06-16-12) - Three Criticisms

First, as background, this was my first Dave concert and although I know songs like Everyday, Crash Into Me, and I Did It, I really know only his Stand Up and Groo Grux albums (both of which I love). Because of my limited knowledge of his song list, I didn't think the show was great. I mean, it was good ... the guys are great musicians ... but it wasn't so enjoyable because I wasn't familiar with his music.

My three criticisms are:
1 - there was too much time in between songs. I thought that was kind of odd that they were talking to each other in between songs as if the audience wasn't there. I've been to a lot of concerts and have never seen bands stop playing for several minutes in between songs.
2 - could they put on some decent clothes? I mean, have a little respect for the SHOW. Carter looked good. But the other guys looked like they just rolled out of bed. I mean, they were wearing street clothes with wrinkled shirts ... and their shirts weren't even tucked in. All I'm saying is that they could dress up A LITTLE.
3 - Stand back! During Carter's mini-drum solo, the bass player was standing right in my (and a thousand other people's) sight-line. I mean, YOU have seen Carter play ... I haven't! Step back, out of the audience's sight-line for goodness sake. Dave stood in front of Carter too (not on my side of the stage). They should realize WHERE they are standing ... and step back so that the audience can see.

The fact that you "love" Stand Up boggles my fucking mind, but hey to each their own. Also if I am not mistaken, Carter wears a fuckin football jersey (or some jersey) almost every show, and he is the one that u said was decently dressed? Im confused, why do they have to be dressed up to play music??? Jeans and a button up not good enough for u? Also, I don't agree with your "Several minutes" between songs comment, I would say it was like 2 at max. The fact that they do communicate lets the fans know "hey they are having fun and maybe improvising to make the show better for us"... One last this, look at the screens or something if ur view is blocked for a half minute

Re: Jiffy Lube Live (06-16-12)

If these are the things that detract from you enjoying the music then DMB is not the show for you. I've seen concerts like you've described through your criticisms and all I can say is that isn't DMB's stage style. I personally love the casual stage approach. No fancy stage make-up and sequins. No three-tiered stage. No pyrotechnics. The band is there to share their music with you and put on a show. Granted, a nice visual display helps and I feel DMB's light show compliments heir casual approach nicely. What you saw at Jiffy Lube Live is the same style they've been performing shows with for 20 years... Except they have more lights now.

Re: Jiffy Lube Live (06-16-12) - Three Criticisms

To DMBRox: actually, I think that Dreamgirl is a fantastic song. I've listened to it maybe a hundred times. And Hunger for the Great Light (is that what it's called?) and Track 11 are phenominal as well as Out Of My Hands ... wow ... when the bass and drums fade in, there's nothing like it. I'm a prog rock guy and there are elements of prog on the Stand Up album. Ironically, I hate the song "Stand Up," LOL. I always skip that track. As far as Carter wearing a jersey, at least it's SOMETHING. I mean, at least he put some thought into it. It seemed like the other guys just wore whatever they happened to have on that day. I just think that professional musicians should care about their appearance on stage. And I was unable to see the screens because I was in the pit. And that bass player stood right in front of me, apparently totally unaware of his affect on the audience, blocking my view of Carter.

And, Whitey, I go to a concert for the music, too. And I quite enjoyed the musicianship of DMB. I don't need the flashy lights, pyrotechnics, etc. (although that is fun sometimes ... I mean, Rush puts on a good show and, even Dave had some nice lights and effects). I've seen King Crimson a dozen times ... absolutely no flashiness there ... just pure musicianship. But, at least Fripp wears a tuxedo!

So, I've been going to concerts since I was 8 years old in 1968 (Beach Boys, Buffalo Springfield, Soul Survivors, and Strawberry Alarm Clock). From Zappa to Madonna to McCartney to ELP to Imelda Mae to Tower of Power. I stand by my criticisms. But, like Rox says: to each his own.

(And for the record; my part-time rock band covers Why I Am ... possibly my favorite DMB song and - no doubt - the most difficult to play.)

All of the bold explains why your point makes no sense. plus you say its all about the music, not the image...contradiction!
p.s. "that bass player" is Stefan

In his defense, the image the Beach Boys portray through their attire is pretty self explanatory given the name of their band... and I think we can all agree that Madonna is more of a "shock factor" stage image than anything. It is like you said though... to each their own. I love the DMB casual look. I can't stand watching a band like Fall Out Boy parade around on stage in excessive eyeliner and faux-hawks. Or maybe I'm thinking of Greenday... whatever.
To more of an extent, one thing that REALLY bugs me about watching live musicians is seeing ANYONE wear shorts on stage. Granted, there are appropriate places for it, but playing for a large crowd is not it. I suppose you can make some style of shorts look ok on stage, but everytime I see a band with guys wandering the stage in shorts it just makes me feel like they don't care. Even worse when it's paired with flip flops.
