It's not shtick, it's truth. Nothing from 2011 will be on par with what they were doing from 94-00. Nothing.

Nah, DMB's done some great stuff since 2004, and they've done some shitty stuff before 04. But there's no way their best jam comes from 2011.

BOWA Bonus Disc, Track 2. That's from 2002. Recently from RR1995. Pick a 2 step from 1992-2000 and it'll rival the two I mentioned.

That doesn't mean it's the best jam. Maybe your favourite. But not the best.

Actually, it is. 94-00 are the band's golden years. There is no debate.

maybe in terms of popularity...In terms of live performances, I think there's a debate. While LITHOG from 2011 may seem boring to you, a Jam from 95 is a skip for me most times. Your opinion and taste is not law

I think you'd be surprised (or probably not) to know that most newer DMB fans these days feel the way I do.

    Edit: not most, but many

What a problem it is for that large majority of fans to not be jaded and not be able to fully enjoy what current DMB puts out. God forbid someone enjoys something you don't think is as good.

I didn't get into the band until 07/08, my favorite tours are 2010 and 2013, my favorite shows I attended were in 2009 and 2011... I must be less of a fan then you. Suck's to be me

Mine wasn't until 08. Favourite show is from 09. Second favourite from 2003. Liking the new stuff isn't a problem. it's disliking the old stuff that causes me to think somebody's cerebrally disadvantaged.

Right, because they're too fucking lazy and self-serving to try and look into the old stuff. They hear the new DMB, think that's what it's always been, and stop there. That's a problem on the fanbase's part.

I liked AFTW a lot, it's a lot better that BW. That said, I'm not a fan of the new rock oriented sound and stale setlists they're putting out live these days. I choose not to attend shows because of this.

Listen to LT3. That Seek Up->Heartbeat->Linus & Lucy->PNP>Rapunzel is beautiful music. These days they're up there playing as fast as they can, taking no chances and playing with no subtlety or imagination. I wish they would realize how good they used to be and I wish the newer fanbase would demand more of them, but that dream is dead.

Either way, enjoy what you like I guess.

I listen to old stuff alot, but honestly, if given the choice of listening to a live ttra from 2008 on, I would take that over a dmblive from 1995 most of the time. I don't think there's anything wrong with liking more rock like dmb more. I love the old jazzy stuff, but most of the time I would rather listen to a more current version of an old song. It's just preference. Doesn't mean I think the band is at their peak post 2008, or the albums they have released since everyday are better, but I do think there is moments that are right up there.

I agree that stuff is great, I listen to it alot. But for me it comes down to the stage the band was in their career when I was in high school and became a fan. They were past that, so I didn't even discover alot of that great stuff until I was already a huge fan. I appreciate it and there is definitely alot more quantity of quality from back then. God I would kill to see some shows from the late 90s or 2000-2004. But that phase of dmb is strictly on tape for me. The peak of my dmb attendance is 6/20/09, CVille 2010 and the AC caravan... There's great stuff in this era of dmb, it just takes alot more sifting thru shit to find it (IE, Hershey 09 )

Shameless plug. DMB at Charlottesville 2010 N2 in its entirety. Shot by Crispy and myself, plus we both ran out of battery at the end of the show, so we have some others footage for the final Ants. Enjoy!

    Re: Thank you Chester Copperpot...

the last week or so i decided to start listening through all the LTs in full. so far, i got through the first 4, which included some shows in eras that i typically don't listen to. there are some songs that i honestly don't know how people could say they are worse now than they were back 15 years ago.

take Jimi Thing from LT1 for example. people complain about how the song is stale now and that it needs to be changed up, but it never really changed even from the early days. its always been boyd solo breaks between verses going into a sax solo and then an electric guitar solo (when tim was around), same as it is now. the only difference was dave attempting to solo instead of scatting, and some slight differences to the beat carter plays during the jam. but its essentially been the same structure for 20 years.

Jimi from LT1 is absolutely brutal to listen to. roi has this awful effect on his horn and tim sounds like when you tried picking up the phone while connected to dial up internet. Jimi from LT4, which much better than 1, is still the same structure as it is now. it just sounds looser because there are less instruments and its not as heavy sounding, but i don't get the argument that its stale now but it was ok in the 90s when its never really changed like a song like Crush has over the years.

Two Step from LT1 is nothing to write home about. its 7 minutes long, thats it. not much going on outside of the verses and chorus. no intro, no jam, nothing interesting or unique. now go listen to Two Step from LT13. its like night and day, and LT13 is worlds better. its played more crisply and far more interesting musically between the intro and tim's solo.

LIOG from LT4 has like a minute long boyd solo. far less exciting than the build up the song has now. DDTW is a song that needs the aggression it has now with it sped up and the electric guitar. and songs like Stay and Too Much has benefited from being cleaned up and more structured towards the end of the song like they are now compared to their early days.

people talk about how fast Rapunzel is now, but listen to it from LT3. its so incredibly slow. its like its played in slow motion. Raven is better now than it was in 2000 because it actually has lyrics now. and any Recently that is missing the jam (like LT3) is a wasted performance.

there are plenty of songs that have improved over the years and are performed better than they've ever been. and that LITHOG from randalls island in 2011 i actually a great performance of the song and is much more interesting to listen to than early versions of Two Step.

Not going to comment on your entire post, I'll leave that for someone else, but I will say this-I saw Rapunzal twice in 2000 and it sounded fucking fantastic. I last saw Rapunzal in 2012. It was only half as good and did not have the same groove and feel as it did in 2000.

the one from LT1 is at a better pace, but LT3 its like they're playing in a time warp. but the best rapunzel sounded was around 2006 with butch on the keys. he sounded absolutely fantastic on rapunzel (and warehouse) and really gave the song a light, loose, fun sound. the rapunzel from 6.22.05, butch straight up steals the 2nd half of solo from roi and gives it a groove that you can't help move to.

Also, there is no Two Step on LT1..did you mean LT4? I also completely disagree that DDTW needs aggression and electric guitar. The one from LT31 is about as perfect as it gets for me when it comes to that one
