Re: Doctor Who (Russell T Davies/Steven Moffat)

It really wasn't that great of an episode. Near bottom. I am waiting for them to develop the Promised Land/Heaven/Whatever it is story line more.

The most popular theory I've heard about The Promised Land is that basically this "Missy" character (think that's her name), that she's just another form of someone else we already know. Like she's The Master and there's forming some kind of trap for the Doctor there in the Promised Land, or she's some kind of future/alternate reality/etc version of Clara. or maybe even River Song.

though another common one is that Danny Pink will be revealed to be the Master, in hiding. like how Time Lords can be temporarily changed into humans without them even knowing it themselves, until they're "triggered back" by someone else with that watch.

Both good theories since hasn't it already been stated that the Master is coming back?

I don't THINK anything like that has been blatantly stated... but obviously we know at this point sometimes Moffat straight up lies in the media. Though which I don't blame him for, since you always want big things to be a surprise. granted, something like Benedict Cumberbatch playing the Master, as so many fans have talked about and would love? I can bet all the money in the world that ain't happening. but with how strong these rumors seem to be this year, and with Moff still never using the character yet since he took over, I'm thinking he will show up.

The rumors about The Master started when Sylvester McCoy said that he knew who was going to play The Master, and that it was going to be scary. That was in March.

Then, a story popped up backing his comment in June in the Daily Mail, suggesting a story to go along with it. Then in early August, Moffat clarified the rumors, saying he wasn't bringing The Master back. And then he apologized to John Simm.

Nobody directly refuted McCoy's comments, but there is just as good of a chance as anything that he was just trying to stir the pot.

okay something I only just learned about last night. Ya know how there's that whole sequence in Austin Powers where he and Elizabeth Hurley are totally naked, but the way they're handling the props in the room, it keeps all the goodies blocked from actual view? well apparently Karen Gillan did a very similar scene in this little romantic comedy she had come out not long after she was done on DW. "Not Another Happy Ending", I remember seeing the trailer for it, but that I wasn't too interested to actually watch the whole thing.

what she did in the movie was just her and it was just a little over a minute long, but I gotta say, I'm surprised in that they didn't take nearly as much care to genuinely block her body with the different set props. Because you wind up seeing a fair bit of her body

well I mean I thought it was kinda funny, but I guess I'm just even a little surprised that she did it (I would assume the movie is pg13, and that's like the line for that)

and after seeing the preview for "Selfie", I wasn't impressed with that very much, either. I haven't even bothered with the pilot yet.

shit that reminds me, I caught this this morning as well, and this is directly about what's happening right now. These videos are a couple years old, but here's someone's theory of Clara and River Song being the same person (I THINK, anyway). there's 3 total ones to it, you can link to them from the related ones.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vUHK8iuhUns

edit: or I guess, not even necessarily that they're the same character, but that like they're "echoes" of each other... ? The guy lays it all out in these clips he put together.

I forgot to note, I'm certainly not advocating that every bit in the above compilation there is a convincing, compelling argument for the guy's theory. I'd imagine even if he would admit that, that some of that is little more than little bits of character behavior and dialog that Moffat simply likes to employ in his work. But some of it yea did make me scratch my head a bit.

yea I'd say of the normal group of people that I talk about the show with, pretty much the prevailing theory(ies) were a combination of Missy was a future version of River, and/or a future version of Clara, and/or Danny was the Master in hiding. Plus apparently the BBC's official facebook page, they put some kind of post about the reveal what must've been like the very minute the episode finished airing in the UK. cause a friend of mine was kind of bummed she saw that beforehand.

really weird thing is, I'd seen some of the BTS set photos with the Cyberman, hell I'd even seen the Radio Times poster of the episode a couple days before (they've been making a lot of really cool retro-ish ones for series 8 episodes) that had one, and yet as soon as I started watching the episode, I'd completely forgotten they were an element, so I actually wound up surprised at that reveal
I liked it, and looks like next week's gonna be an absolute shit storm.

and Moffat has proven to often plan out his arcs SEASONS in advance, which is a cool concept, but they're not nearly the surprise I think he'd like them to be. As you say, a lot of people were thinking that's who Missy was, and if you remember back, it seemed incredibly obvious that River was Amy & Rory's child WELL before the reveal.

okay duh doy... forgotten that I'd already said most of this stuff before up in posts at the top of the page

I don't think he is dead long term, think something is going to happen. Maybe he becomes an android or something, retaining his appearance and conscious but not human anymore? I don't know

btw the character of Dr. Chang, I think was his name. While I'm watching it, I'm thinking, gahh there's something familiar about this guy, but I can't put my finger on it. It wasn't until later when I ran into another board and someone brought it up -- I don't think this was necessarily a conscious thing done by Moffat, and certainly doesn't have any meaning, but I think he kind of did both look and sound like Matt Smith.

and, I wonder if you guys had thought about this yet... cause I've seen some others remark about Moff doing this gender switch for the Master, it was sort of his cheeky way of answering all the "the next Doctor regeneration (before Capaldi was cast, of course) should be female!!" That this was his fun way of still getting to "have that". I'd forgotten that in the Neil Gaimen written "The Doctor's Wife", the Tardis personified as the woman does establish that it's entirely possible for a Timelord to switch genders in a regeneration. I just wanna know how he/she made it out of that Gallifrey being locked away in that hidden universe.

alright I'll be interested to see how any of the rest of you feel about this one... cause I just finished watching the finale, and whoa boy was that a bit of a let down. I mean I've got multiple points across this thing that either just made no sense whatsoever and/or were stupid or just poor writing. My immediate response, this might be my least favorite finale of the Moffat era. Thank god we've got the Christmas show relatively close.

I enjoyed the finale. Sad to see Osgood's demise, I really enjoyed that character. On the other hand I was not a big Danny Pink fan, so hopefully we've seen the last of him. Looking at the season overall, there were some really good episodes and moments, but it focused WAY too much on Clara. Capaldi is a fantastic Doctor and such a welcome change from Matt. Next series needs to be more Doctor and less companions.

So Doctor Who has jumped the Shark. Just watched the season finale last night. It was horrible. This season has had some decent episodes, but the awful ones are too much to over look at this point.
In my opinion there is no denying that the show has been steadily declining since Russell T. Davis and David Tennant left the show. I am not saying the show was not good with Matt Smith, because it was. I wound up loving him as the doctor too. The show was still declining though.
I believe Peter Capaldi is doing a good job in the role. The problem is the writing is just horrible. The only conclusion I can come to is Steven Moffat needs to go. I believe he is the cause of the decline. I just hope he releases control of it before it is too late.
I already know of several Whovians that stopped watching. I may have to join them until the show improves. That probably won't be until Moffat is gone.

Jenna Coleman has supposedly decided to come back, at least for half of a season:

well okay but what confuses me a little about this, she's apparently made this decision well after the shooting of the Christmas special was done (which was several weeks ago at this point). Because obviously the special ends in such a way to say goodbye to Clara for good, so are they having to do significant reshoots? They talk about "doing rewrites", but I'm not sure if that means what they've had as working drafts so far on the first few episodes of series 9, putting Clara back into them.

At any rate, I'm happy to hear she'll at least still be around for a little while longer.

No!!!! I was so happy for her to be gone. I enjoyed her until this season was more about her than the Doctor. I really want a new companion!

Rewatching the series and on Blink. One of the creepiest Doctor Who episodes ever.
