Re: Law school

I don't know Veronica that well, but I think it would be funny if she ended up as a judge with her own TV show.

Judge Ronnie - vengance is hers, in her own forum!

Anyone else venturing into this journey? Starting in a month. Not so much nervous more than anxious to get it started. The anticipation of what I am getting into is my main thing. I know it is going to be tough. Anyone with any tips on the first year?

I can also help out with some suggestions on preparing for the LSAT's and applying to schools if anyone needs it.

as a law school graduate I will say that getting a law degree is not hard. However, doing well in law school and making it worth your time and money is very hard, it is very competitive.

I'm taking the LSAT in October. Outside of the course, what else do you recommend for prep?? Any prep books (Princeton Review, Kaplan, LSAC, etc) that you thought were worth the money also?

I'm just going to say this. Unless you already are 110% sure that you want to be an attorney, and/or you already know first hand (not think, but know...watching Boston Legal is basically entirely unrealistic) what it is like to be one, do not merely go to law school because there doesn't seem to be anything else.

It will be approximately four years of hell.

If you do go, check college at the door.

    All the best

I'm actually of the opinion that the course would not be worth $1,500, unless you're not that strapped for money. I bought 3 pretty exhaustive prep books (I think Princeton Review was one of them). One book I bought solely targeted the logic games section, which I found to be the most difficult section until I learned the techniques from the books on how to attack the questions.

Just as important, I bought copies of previously administered LSATs and took them under exam situations. I probably took about 10 of them preparing for the exam.

The books can do the job if you're willing to put in the time. If you're not that diligent, consider the course. But, I increased my score 15 points between my first practice exam and my actual LSAT by using the books.

practice tests, practice tests, practice tests, practice tests, etc.....

    you get the idea.

Once youg et the basics down the SINGLE best thign you can do is take timed practice tests under real test conditions. I took my LSAT last December and did really well on it. I'll be applying this fall for fall 09 admission. The games can seem daunting at first, but you really can learn them. Reading comp is all about speed and not taking too much time getting through it. Logic problems aren't terribly hard, imo...you just have to learn the types of questions (there are about 8 I beleive) and know what they are looking for......learn them all, then take practice tests. Id recommend 20-30 practice tests.

Also, make sure you use past LSAT tests..not made up tests from some company.

if you are just taking over your dad's business whyw ould it matter where you went?

The thinking out there is..if you want a BigLaw job, which start around 160k you need to go to a t-14 (top 14 school) OR do extremely well at the school you go to (top 10%). The legal arena can be seen as VERY snobby and simply wont even consider you if you go to a lower tier school. Mabye more so than any other profession, where you went to school is VERY important.

Personally I don't want that corporate job, bc along with the huge starting salary comes the 80+ hours of work a week. Seems like such a shitty existence. Im not stressing out where I get in too badly, bc like i said, im not going to work myself to death for anyone.

Damn. By your school list I see what you mean about you doing well on your LSAT. I'm actually starting my last year at Florida State in a few weeks. Not quite up there with your schools, but we still just crack the top quarter of law schools, so not too bad.

I'm completely with you about the big firm jobs. What good is tons of money without time to enjoy it?

Just got done with my first day. Well reading and briefing anyways. I must say it is more rewarding than college when you get a topic. A lot of work, but I'm kind of focused on it. Any help (outlines, notes) would be more than a help. Also, the profs are cool.

definitely. that case was followed up in our book by a case about suing over a fin-backed whale, which then was followed up by suing over a duck pond. not really sure what the fascination with animals is.
