The lyrics aren't great, but it sounds like DMB compared to what was BW.

Re: Spinoff: Big Whiskey or AFTW?

I voted BW, obviously. I'm ok with bands changing their sound, and I think they did this effectively with BW. AFTW sounds forced, I love Broken Things, Belly Belly Nice, If Only, Rooftop on the album, and I love the song Snow Outside, but not the studio version (dave's vocals don't do it for me), but the rest I could do without.

BW sounds like the band is excited and passionate while AFTW sounds forced and uninspired to my ears.

    whats forced with AFTW?

the only album that was forced was everyday because brand new songs were written in less than a week without 3 members of the band even being on the same coast as dave and ballard.

I'd say Beach Ball is on the same level of Stone and Last Stop.

The Songwriting feels very forced for the most part to my ears.

Absolutely love that line. Love Carter on it. Love the horns on it. Love the progression. Love the structure. It has the classic DMB epic feel to it like Monkey Man imo. Haters gunna hate.

To each their own, man. I really enjoy AFTW, vastly over BW.
I just wish the AFTW songs got more play (ones other than Rooftop and BBN) - they could have evolved more.

As a whole, Big Whiskey. Aside from Time Bomb, there isn't a tune on Big Whiskey I immediately skip. AFTW has three rather large duds - Gaucho, Belly Full, & If Only.

With all that said, and as others have mentioned, AFTW contains the best songs of the two albums. Snow Outside, Drunken Solder, Broken Things, Rooftop, and even Mercy are all great songs.

It's the best thing to come out of the BW sessions, and the only thing to come out of those sessions that actually sounds like DMB. I think people gravitate to it for that reason (and also because it's a good song in its own right.)

It's certainly not on the level of The Stone, but I think it's in the upper echelon of post LWS songs.

And of course, like most of the best post LWS songs, it never gets played.

Not true. Despite the fact that he doesn't play the parts live, Boyd is alive and well on AFTW. Belly Belly Nice, Drunken, Broken Things (with the blue water jam in the middle). The other members are prominently showcased as well on the album (Belly Belly Nice and Snow Outside come to mind for both Tim and Jeff) in a much more pronounced way than on BWGK. It's not simply because Lillywhite produced it.

LITHOG, Baby Blue, Spaceman, and Squirm are all really great songs though.

Lillywhite producing it does has a huge influence. Lot of people feel this way so there is some truth to it

I think Beachball is as good as people make it out to be. I've never seen people place it on the level of The Stone or Last Stop, (until this thread, anyway) but I agree with the sentiment that it is one of the better, most classic-DMB sounding songs post LWS. The May 1st, 2009 performance is a perfect representation of the potential of the current line-up.

Back to the thread. Away From The World is easily the better record. I appreciate Big Whiskey for what it is, but I can't for the life of me understand how fans who are so familiar with the band could prefer that material over AFTW's.

Re: Spinoff: Big Whiskey or AFTW?

If BW wasnt beaten to death live I dont think it would get soo much hate, whereas AFTW is the opposite, aside from BBN, and Rooftop it really hasnt been played much live.

With that being said...I think AFTW is slightly better than BW...but its very very close.
