Here's what we all want to hear in 2015

So, inspired by Musicology200's thread "Pick 5 Songs to Hear in 2015" I went ahead (with his permission) and ran the same poll over at the #DMBFamily group on Facebook. Limited it to 5, kept the same basic rules during tally.

Initially, I just wanted to get a wider view on the question. Simply have more input. But as I began to tally results, I decided it would be even more interesting to ultimately have a view of the difference between Ants and Family desires for what gets played this tour. So I have it in three parts: Ants, Family, and Total.

Below are the results (raw Excel file) and they're pretty interesting to read through. Top 5 are bolded but I gave 15 just to give an overall view of what missed and by how much.

Definitely check out the PDFs attached

Full Lists:

Family List.jpg
Total List.jpg

Interesting bits:

- Obviously Last Stop, Stone, JTR, and Dreaming Tree are universal winners here.
- The DMBFamily, as crazy as they tend to be, didn't do too bad with picks.
- Although, in the Family numbers, Alligator Pie, Dreamgirl, and Angel did all beat songs like Captain and PFWYG.
- Shake Me Like A Monkey only received 1 vote total. Not as popular with Family as we thought, or simply saturation = less demand?
- Seems only Family is really into Break Free as it rounded out their top 5 overall and only got 2 votes here.
- You Never Know was a surprise (to me at least) reaching a tie for 5th in the combined results.
- Most songs fell into the "rarely seen" category rather than "I really like this one" - possibly an insight to fans' mindsets going into this tour.

Just for shits & giggles, here's a setlist based on the Ants top 26 (the average setlist length last year):

Acoustic:
  1. Blue Water
  2. Captain
  3. The Dreaming Tree
  4. Busted Stuff
  5. #41
  6. Cry Freedom
  7. Squirm
  8. Good Good Time

Electric:
  1. #34
  2. The Best of What's Around
  3. If I Had It All
  4. Kit Kat Jam >
  5. JTR
  6. Raven
  7. Sweet Up And Down
  8. American Baby Intro
  9. Spoon
  10. Typical Situation
  11. Sugar Will
  12. Hello Again
  13. The Stone
  14. #40

Encore:
  1. You Never Know
  2. Pig

Second Encore:
  1. The Last Stop

So, with all that out there, what are your thoughts? Should I get a job that keeps me busier during the day?

It's interesting, and I noted the same thing - that the Family, no matter how crazy they may be, on the whole have decent taste in DMB. Sure, there are the small group of folks who are all OMG SEVEN but I ran the same thing to see if we could pick a setlist between Ants and the Fam.

After pulling all the results together, this is what it would look like if DMB did something similar and allowed fans to choose 20 songs for a setlist.

These results show us that the hardcore fan and the casual fan (within reason) have a similar taste in music - so DMB playing sets that "appeal to the new fan" is a difficult concept when we can visualize that the "new fan" and the "hardcore fan" have relatively similar taste in DMB.

Truthfully, I can care less if Squirm ever gets played again. Just not a huge fan of the song.

Are your results above before 2003 or did the results just happen to not include anything after that?

I was honestly shocked by the results. With all the talk here, you'd think the Family's top 5 was going to be SMLAM, Y&M, Seven, etc. like you said. Gotta say, much respect for the musical tastes over there.

If we could only do something about the sanity...

Wait - Are you defining "Hardcore" as Antsmarching.org and facebook groups as "casual" fans?

I think you're drawing weird lines about level of fan based on what forum people go to online. Some people waste their time in this group. Others waste their time on facebook. It has zero bearing on how much of a fan someone is.

If anything it says that people who obsess with the band but frequent different groups are both familiar with the band's full discography and generally like the same songs.

I think you know he's not defining anything. I think you also know just as well that one can (and does) loosely label Ants as hardcores and #DMBFamily as casuals for the sake of conversation.

I think we all understand that these are sweeping generalizations and aren't meant to define one or the other. Obviously there are tons of hardcore fans in #DMBFamily just as there are tons of casual fans on Ants.

I wouldn't say there are casual fans in either group. If you're going as far as to join an online community for something, let alone be active enough in that community to participate in polling, you're a hard core fan.

I think it's impossible to define one group as one thing, but you can loosely label (based on type of discussion and level of engagement) that the more active posters here could be considered "hardcores" and the more active posters there could be considered "casual". When topics here include the mix on the latest LT release and topics there consist of what Dave's hair smells like - you can loosely label each group of people. Those labels aren't perfect, and exceptions exist between and within both groups, but on the surface level you can compare them with those labels.

When topics here include the mix on the latest LT release and topics there consist of what Dave's hair smells like - you can loosely label each group of people. Those labels aren't perfect, and exceptions exist between and within both groups, but on the surface level you can compare them with those labels.
That's more like a weird obsession

Whoa, good catch. That's a typo. Only 1 person picked Squirm in DMBFamily, zero here. I was thinking to myself too, "Who knew that song was so popular..."

lol can a mod edit that out now?

Edit: Just checked some of the other numbers to be sure, seems ok.

Agreed. It makes more sense, since we're the true real epic hardcore super fans. It's not like we're the super fleeting passive interest super casual fans.
