i wonder if football will eventually decline. i think the writing is on the wall unless they really shape up with the all the long-term injuries that players suffer. you can see it happening in youth leagues already, fewer kids are playing. which means the overall talent pool will get smaller, meaning fewer TOP NOTCH athletes make it up through the ranks and into the NFL, meaning a poorer product.

And I'd argue that if 2004 happened today, it might be a bigger deal, because Twitter. It could possibly draw in more people who otherwise wouldn't have cared.

OMG, World Series ratings are trending upward, baseball is saved!

    http://www.forbes.com/sites/maurybro...owest-watched/

"According to Nielsen, Game 7 saw 3.7/23 with 23.5 million viewers."

"Game 7 was a 22 percent increase in rating and 23 percent increase in audience over last year’s Series-clinching Game 6 between the Cardinals and Red Sox (11.3/18 – 19.2 million)."

"FOX made major in-roads with a younger audience, something detractors like to say baseball is losing. The 25 hours of the 2014 World Series averaged a 3.7 in the 18-49 age bracket, raising FOX’s season-to-date prime-time average in the demo by 20 percent (2.0 to 2.4) and had as much impact on the prime-time ratings race as an entire season of a top-10 show."

"Game 7 was also FOX’s highest-rated prime-time broadcast of the television season, and the network’s best (excluding Super Bowl Sunday) since January 2013.

Game 7 also ranks as the network’s best non-NFL rating since Game 7 of the 2011 World Series."

Maury Brown of Forbes reports that Major League Baseball’s annual revenues for 2014 will top $9 billion. That figure is an increase of $1 billion over last year.

Driving the increase: media revenue, with new deals with FOX, ESPN, and TBS doubling the previous national TV take and local deals for the Dodgers, Rangers, Angels and others all leading to increases.

As Brown notes, gross revenues for Major League Baseball have grown 321 percent in the past 19 years.

I heard all the managers and front office people had to fly Southwest out to San Diego for the fact they're all broke because baseball is in decline.
