Simmons reaction isn't that far off base if you ask me. He doesn't seem too concerned to me.

^^ 45 second mark and I'm sold on Simmons' take on it.
you serious? what do you expect him to do, wail and weep and gnash his teeth? go Will Ferrell in the phone booth?

I think anything short of Kobe's comments on the matter falls short. Its not like he got up and danced around. And its not like he knew the extent of the injury. yeah, bynum was writhing around, but, come on, these are basketball players. Im pretty sure they brought out the crash cart for paul pierce at mid-court in the finals last year.. about 2 minutes before he was back playing...

Has Bill Simmons ever written his opinions on the 1985 Patriots music video "The Patriots Are We"? I'm really curious on his thoughts, but I've never seen one of his columns mention it.

4:14 with Tony Eason smiling and saying "We'll bury the Bears, just wait and see" and it's end result (he didn't complete a single pass, he got sacked a dozen times, and NE had -25 yards at halftime) has to be one of my favorite moments in "Insert-Foot" Sports History.

    Thats awesome.
I never knew that even existed.
But its like the Bears dropped the ultimate pwnage/rapes/embarassment on them afterward.

I just had to watch the Super Bowl Shuffle after that as well.

I don't remember who #8 was, but the fact that he has a cowbell is awesome. LOL

Edit: I just looked it up, and apparently it was the punter, Maury Buford. Figures give the punter the cowbell.

    Just read Bill's latest article:

To further close the circle: I'm retiring from this space in ESPN The Magazine after seven happy years. Like my father and his superintendency, The Magazine was never an ideal match for me -- I hate advance deadlines and word counts -- and yet, I couldn't be happier with how it all turned out. It's just time for me to try some new things, that's all. And you have to know when it's time. I learned that from my father.

(There's hope for you yet, Brett.)

He just finished up a 7000 page book. I wouldn't even want to see a keyboard if I did that much typing.

Once football starts he will be cranking out 2 columns and 3 podcasts a week.

you're probly right, but he doesnt crank out columns nearly as much as he used to. He's probly got one of the best jobs ever for a sports columnist.

I think you mean 700 pages.

Anyway, I enjoy his podcasts more than his columns now anyway. So long as he's got good guests that is. There's been some terrible podcasts because of the guests. But as long as the guest is either very funny, knowledgeable or brings out the best parts of Simmons, its a good listen.

The Tony Stewart podcast was the worst.

I really cannot think of too many other bad ones.

I thought the one where he had the ESPN ombudsman lady on was incredibly boring. I shut it off about half way through.
    That one stands out specifically.

The best IMO are whenever he has Carolla on. Also I'm always entertained by JackO and he and Bill's constant back and forth over Yankees/Red Sox. I like when he was Dave Jacoby on and they talk about how ridiculous whatever MTV Real World/Road Rules thing is going on is. And whoever the guy is that does the "Half Baked Ideas" is really funny too.

Kevin Wildes is the half baked ideas guy.
All his friends are great...JackO, House, Jacoby, Wildes, Carolla, Kimmel. I thought the one with Kevin Love the other day was pretty good too. He has friends in Hollywood, the NBA, the NFL, and his non-public figure friends are funny too. He should never have a bad podcast guest.

I thought the one with the ombudsman could have been really good, but they both seemed really cautious, which is understandable. I still thought she had an interesting story to tell, but it just dragged on far too long.

Have you ever listened to Carolla's podcast when he has Simmon's on? It's fantastic.

I would love to know how guys who seem smart and funny like Wildes and Jacoby could be be involved in the trainwreck that is Sports Nation.

i like simmons, but his writing does irk me from time to time because it is essentially just his opinion articulated very well. there's no journalism element to his writing besides when he includes player statistics. and due to his popularity, his articles can be taken as fact, when in reality, his articles are sometimes nothing but his unfounded opinion. case in point, when he writes about being able to tell a player doesn't like a coach by analyzing his body language from the stands. no team sources, just his expert opinion from his seat 100 feet away. again, i like him for what he is, a comedic half-blogger, half-writer that's with the times. and simmons knows this, but i worry that other people don't.

with that being said, he does have a dream job.

Bill Simmons and I have a connection. I swear on more than a handful of occasions now, my boyfriend and I have some weird random conversation not even necessarily relating to sports, and then like a day later Simmons is talking about the same weird thing. For example, I told my boyfriend that Lincecum looked like the kid from Dazed and Confused and we had a big conversation about it and how he's always touching his face in the movie. And then the SAME DAY, a few hours later, Simmons says the exact same thing.

Oh, and I also think Sports Gal is hilarious.

whenever i'm bored in front of my computer, i'll always just reach back into the simmons archives and read something from pre 06 (when i first started reading him)

Simmons is my favorite sportswriter and my top influence, but the only problem I've ever found with him is that he thinks he's a little too smart sometimes. He clearly knows sports and he'll make bold statements or predictions sometimes. He's right a lot, but you're inevitably going to be wrong because sports are that way. But instead of ever just saying, "Yeah, I blew that one," he'll often have an excuse why it happened. When he said Cleveland was going to the Finals and nobody was stopping them, instead of saying, "Yeah, maybe Orlando was better than I thought" he just blamed Mike Brown for being stupid.

Sometimes he'll fess up, but I fear he's got a bit of an ego now.
