One argument that absolutely cannot be defended. never thought I would get tired of hearing 41 but that has happened. More so the fact that I cannot stand a guitar solo and no sax solo.

Every tour since 1994 has been this. Expecting the band to change this method after 20 years is insanity.

I do a agree somewhat for the early ears because they had no material so of course that's how it was. They didn't have a choice. Now they do and refuse.

They have one official album, some unreleased stuff and RTT in 1994

In 2014, there's tons of unofficial material and 7 studio albums. Keep drinking the koolaid.

Lol no but have heard many shows and many old Bruce fans agree that from a musical standpoint it was better. Maybe not a marathon like his shows are now but debuting old rare songs without practicing them in years just because of a sign while cool can sound very sloppy.

    True.

But where in the history of all those albums and material was the band playing these wildly diverse sets?

They have, however, had surprises for the fans each year. Good Good Time this year. Crazy Easy last year. Those are pretty huge surprises.

As just mentioned, aside from 1998 and 2003 when did the band play these completely diverse sets from night to night??

Up until Crash they had two albums worth of material (r2T, UTTAD - and even songs from Crash)yet the sets were really not THAT diverse. Then BTCS came out and the sets seemed more exploratory because they finally had new material after 5 years. From there the sets really weren't all that crazy up until summer 2003. They sort of got gutsy in 2010 but then backed off halfway through the tour.

It's the same argument and complaint EVERY summer. Believe it or not, the coveted 2004 tour had people bitching up a storm all summer because the sets were so repetitive. Funny what a little time can do. 5 or 10 years from now people may be talking about how great this tour was. Because honestly, the band has sounded absolutely fantastic all summer and the acoustic sets were awesome. Hearing the band that way completely met all my expectations and more. Those sets felt so much like old school DMB I couldn't believe it. Something I thought I'd never feel or see post Roi.

In 2004 80% of the catalog was great.

Your argument is that in a catalog that consists of literally hundreds of songs, they brought back one exciting one each year?

Sounds like you're making our argument for us.

The real question is what percentage of the total available catalog gets played from year to year? Predictable sets 15-20 years ago is totally understandable. Not in 2014.

"Predictable" when filled by great songs would p much only be a negative to the small number of people that see many shows and also complain about stuff as idiotic as predictability.
Loading setlists with turds has been the actual problem, for a LONG time.

    this would be accurate.

songs like You & Me, Shake Me, Sister, If Only, The Riff, Can't Stop, and the list keeps going. hell, even Jimi Thing has been beat over our heads over and over again. and all of these songs saw pretty consistent play this tour.

and don't even get me started on the new Crush ending they'd been attempting and failing this tour. people say the band sounds tight as ever playing these predictable sets! the ending of Crush this year was borderline embarrassing.

    Measly appeasement gesture.

And for all we know, it happened because 1 person close to the band asked them to. Not because Dave gives a shit about anyone in the audience.

People like The Riff, so it has been deleted from your generalization, permanently.

Crap songs are the problem. Not variety. Not predictability.

Predictability is not inherently good or bad. It is compounded in either direction depending on song choice. i.e. Poor songs choices that are also predictable become a doubly bad experience.

So Dave wrote a new set of lyrics for one person who asked to play it? GGT has been pretty consistent lyrically this year, and seems like he put effort into it.

songs like You & Me, Shake Me, Sister, If Only, The Riff, Can't Stop, and the list keeps going. hell, even Jimi Thing has been beat over our heads over and over again. and all of these songs saw pretty consistent play this tour.
The Riff has been played 9 times this year, and 39 times over three years. The others I can understand, but the Riff is a solid song and I don't think it gets enough play, personally.

i like the idea, at least they're trying something new, but the execution just isn't there

even carter sounded bad at times on crush

any play of Can't Stop and Sister is too much play.
i'll give The Riff a pass because people are usually 50/50 on it.
