People have shot without VR for 100s of years. In short, no, VR is NOT necessary. A standard rule in photography is that you can handhold a lens without VR (or IS, canon's term for a similar thing) at 1/the shutter speed. So you'd shoot a 100mm lens at 1/125 (minimum) and a 400mm lens at 1/500. If you had VR, you could shoot it a 400mm lens at 1/250. It just lets you handhold a bit slower.

Note that I tend to think that as you reach > 200mm you need to up the minimum shutter speed to 2 or 3 shutter speeds up. For instance, a 200mm lens should be shot at a minimum of 1/750 or 1/1000. With VR you could do 1/500.

I mean, if you want the best, stay the hell away from a 130 dollar lens. I was just showing you a lens you can have for cheap money. It gives amazing sharpness for the price.

If your shooting on a tripod VR does virtually nothing. Note
No need to jump down my throat. As I've stated before, I'm about a month in to photography as a hobby.

    Thanks for the info however.

I'm sorry man. Don't mean anything by it. I guess thats just how we are up here.

Sorry again. In any event, yes, the VR or IS is to stabilize the lens which is only needed at slower shutter speeds... Here, do this, take pictures at progressively slower shutter speeds, same picture (say like 3 pictures, one at 1/125, 1/30, 1/8). Then look at them. You'll note that it gets less sharp as you go slower. Thats cause your hand wobbles. Under like 1/15 or 1/8 will almost never been 100% clear. And at like 1/4 a second you will NEVER be able to get a clear shot no matter how steady you try to make your hand. (It might look steady on the camera but when you put it on the pc, it won't be perfect)

Again, just trying to get the point across. Not be mean.

Good thread, made me realize I haven't scanned all of the photos I took and printed when I took my photography class a year ago, and I should do that now that I have a scanner. The only good ones I could find at the moment are from the state botanical gardens just with my digital, though I feel like flowers are so cliche

Just for fun I wanted to compare Fuji Velvia 50 to my 6MP D50. These were taken in April at the Dallas Arboretum. Here's the results.

    http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2191/...3de52808_b.jpg

    D50, 18-200mm, Tripod

    http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2032/...078d8ee2_b.jpg

    N80, 50mm 1.8, Velvia 50, Tripod

The colors just POP on the velvia.

No worries, again, thanks for the info. I think from what you told me, that lens would be a good long range one for what I'm into. I'd most likely be using a tripod for the long shots anyway.

This reminded me of a picture I took last year while landing at LAX. I started to play with the shutter speeds and ended up with this.

I've always been a big fan of this one: http://farm1.static.flickr.com/10/12...d4c46ccd_o.jpg

I took that in Mexico in 2003 on a P&S film camera.

I like the location in the last 2. If you had a dramatic firey sky these would've been awesome. Especially with some reflection in that water. I'd definately head back to this location a few more times, assuming it's close by. It has great potential.
