Ants in Austin?

I haven't been here in quite a while, and I can't recall if there was a lovely getting to know you type section on here, but yeahhhh anyway I moved to Austin a month and a half ago and getting a bit bored and antsy (no pun intended) to meet people down here, specifically like-minded people, so was wondering if there were any of you group in the area.

With new DMB friendships I offer cynical opinions on how the band has progressed, memories of a better time, and a lone love for Butch Taylor. Let's hang and by cynical together.

Good day.

    Hey!

There are a few of us Austinites roaming around here (though the other ones I know mostly post in the college football thread).

My favorite city in this country.

    #1 Get Torchy's Tacos.

#2 Get Rudy's BBQ. There are some other places that Austin natives will tell you is "better" but you're either 1) waiting for 2 hours to get in/get the food or 2) it's overrated by Austinites just because it's not as mainstream as Rudy's. Get Rudy's. Oh my God I love Rudy's.

#3 6th St is where the party is, if you're in to that kind of thing. It's ridiculous. Again, Austinites will tell you how much they hate 6th St, but it's one of those things that if you're visiting, have never been to Austin and looking for late night fun, it's where you should go at least one night. It's literally just lined with bars, and on HC weekend will end up looking like this: http://www.ericestate.com/wp-content...uring-sxsw.png All foot traffic, just walk up and down bar hopping and eating out of food trucks. It's awesome.

#4 Go to the Hamilton Pool in Dripping Springs. So gorgeous. This is it: http://www.amazingplacesonearth.com/...ool-Dave-3.jpg That is assuming the weather is good for it, which it should be.

#5 You could float the river in San Marcos, again, assuming the weather is good. Don's Fish Camp is always pretty insane. Keep in mind it's more like a frat party on the river some weekends than it is a relaxing float. It's a lot of beer, a lot of loud music, and a lot of people.

    I'll think of more later.

Salt Lick south of the city is a great place to go. All you can eat platter, BYOB, and live music makes for a good afternoon.

Bar suggestions: Ginger Man (extensive beer list, awesome bar), Toulouse, The Side Bar, Barfly's...I love Stubb's for some live music and drinking, I would check who's playing the weekend you'll be there. I know Phillip Phiillips is going to be there soon, as well as Citizen Cope. I don't know if they'll be there homecoming weekend though.

The fact that there's a Salt Lick in the airport makes AUS the best airport in America by default.

Wahoo's. It's my favorite Fish Taco place in Southern Cali, and they have them in Austin now. They're awesome.

Posted this for Arby when he was coming here:

24 Diner or Magnolia Cafe for late night drunk food.
Best Wurst for a drunken braut on 6th St. Awesome.

Stay away from the pizza stands on 6th St. You will regret it.

As to night spots, if you've never been to Austin before, you'll want to check out 6th St. Most tolerable bars there are Casino El Camino, Jackelope, and Maggie Mae's.
Also swing over to Rainey St. for a couple beers. It's the new 6th St. Try the pizza at Via 313 which is a truck out back of Craft Pride.

After you've had your fill of the college kids and trust fund hipsters, you can head over to W. 6th for an older crowd. Little Woodrows is good spot. Dogwood, Kung Fu Saloon (do not go here on a weekend night; go on a week night or during the day), and the Brew Exchange are also in this area.

Let me preface it by saying that by "overrated" I'm not saying it's bad, in fact, I like all these places I'm about to list, but I just would rather sit down at Rudy's than them.

Sam's - they do have mutton, but I just didn't love it
    Poke-E-Joe's - 100% overrated

I did Franklin once, the wait is just so ridiculously insane. Is it amazing? Yes. Did it live up to the hype? Beyond a shadow of a doubt. The wait is just soooooo insane.

    Re: Ants in Austin?

I'm not sure who you talked to that rated Poke-e-joes highly. That places is taken about as seriously for BBQ here as Red Lobster is for seafood in the NE.

Here's the rundown I gave Arby for BBQ:

    Quote:
Originally Posted by ExistenceNow View Post

A lot of the top rated places here will have a wait in that vein; La BBQ, Mueller's etc...

If that's too much, Salt Lick would be next on my list, but that's about 20-25 minutes outside the city, in Driftwood. BYOB, fantastic atmosphere, great food. There will be a bit of a time commitment there too, but mostly because it's not a place you'll want to hurry in and out of. An hour wait for a table drinking your own beer under the pecan trees is very pleasant.

If you really just don't want to wait, or drive, Brown's has a truck outside Corner Bar on S. Lamar that is good.

    BBQ tourist traps to avoid:

Stubb's (fantastic music venue; dreadful BBQ.)
    Iron Works
    Green Mesquite

I like Rudy's. A lot. I eat there every couple months when I don't have time to do one of the more hardcore places. It has solid BBQ, a fantastic staff and a cool vibe. Very awesome place to go to after a day on the river or at green belt.
It's just not a place I recommend because if someone is coming all the way to Texas, I don't want to recommend BBQ to them that they could get in Colorado.

And to double down on Franklin's, I went there with every intention of shitting all over it. My whole group really did.

It was just too good to hate. It lived up to every ounce of the hype and every minute of the wait.

Oh, and nice rec on Torchy's. Torchy's is tits.

I really hope you tried the Don Juan at Juan in a Million when you were here. Anyone who gave you recs and didn't give you that one should be shot.

Definitely hit up Torchys! Damn fine.

Rudy's never really impressed me too much. It's not bad and I wouldn't turn it down if put in front of me, but it's not my first choice in BBQ. If you end up making your way further south towards New Braunfels, there is a place downtown called Granzins which beats Rudys hands down.

If you're into mexican food there's a place called Casa G's that's pretty good. Prices are really good and I've never had a bad thing there.

Micklethwait is another top notch BBQ place. It's a few miles up the road from franklin. Probably the best brisket I've ever had. Nearly brought tears to my eyes.

So, I've been wanting to move to Austin for years...do you Austinites know of any good companies to work for that don't require an IT degree? Everything I look for that pays decent requires some sort of tech degree.

I have a business degree, and can't find much.

I'm in Austin on business as we speak. My third time in three months. I'm not in love with this place but it grows on me every time I come. No offense Existence, but the locals drive me absolutely nuts
