In Austin now, weather couldn't be more perfect. Sunny with a nice mix of clouds and 80. I just had my first Franklin's barbecue experience. And by experience I mean driving by and seeing people lined up for two blocks waiting to get in to a restaurant that doesn't open until 11 AM

Moving here in August. Still looking for a place, any suggestions on an area? Looking for a good mix of walk-ability, bars/restaurants and outdoors.

I live off of South Lamar and absolutely love it. Not sure what your price range is but I live in a one of the cheapest places on South Lamar and they just completely redid the whole place. www.townhollowaustin.com

I can walk to so many bars and restaurants as well as Zilker Park, Barton Springs, and ACL. It's a perfect location.

    Re: Ants in Austin?

Any suggestions for an hour or two at a time during the day? I will be out there in late October for a conference in San Antonio and planning to drive up and stay a couple days for some other work related time wasters. I'll be tied up with work stuff off and on with a few of our docs and vendors so I don't know when and how much free time I'll have (they will set up dinners etc, no idea where we'll go). Long waits for food really won't be in the cards for this trip nor night life/partying (not that I'm running at that speed much anymore).

Museums, sites etc that I can do in a few hours at a time is about all they'll leave me time for. Love music, art and architecture of most flavors when I quick visit cities like this. I probably won't be able to make any specific shows as I can't really plan anything. At the whim of work people mostly. Any recommendations along those lines?

I'd be interested if anyone has similar rec's for San Antonio as well. I'll be out there for 7-10 days. Staying at the Hyatt or Marriott at the Riverwalk Convention Center area there.

Looks like a great area, I am looking at places there now. Prices are incredible compared to NY. However, my salary may drop to a point where it's equal.

Another question, is it considered too hot to play golf in August? I'm looking forward to having a car and being able to get to a course in 20 minutes opposed to 2 hours.

"Too hot" is a relative term.

The courses will be open and people will be playing them. Whether you make through all 18 without passing out is another story.

I was actually thinking about making the move to Austin from NYC at some point down the road. Kind of in the same boat of you w/r/t having a car, and being closer to outdoors and what not.

Did you have trouble job searching?

My cousin moved from NY last year and loves it.

Job search is still in process, I'm looking at about a $20K salary cut., but might take it because I'm locked in an August 1st. It is much more difficult than NY in that respect. Hopefully the cheap rent and lack of state taxes work it out.

Do you know where in Austin your cousin lives?

I'm not sure of a specific area, I could try and find out though. I know he just recently bought a house.

What industry do you work in if you don't mind me asking? I'd probably be able to take a 20K salary cut assuming my rent would be cut in half.

    Basically this.

I've made many trips to ATX in July and August, and played golf. Hell, I've played 36 holes in August in Austin. Depends on your ability to tolerate heat. I love the heat, so it works out for me. Just drink plenty of water.

No kidding. I already have a house so I just have to worry about property tax pricing me out eventually.

What's annoying me lately is that all the downtown housing/hotel development is strangling out businesses that locals love. Read a long article today about the likelihood of the Red River music district becoming a thing of the past within a year. City is already taking about turning it into a river walk. Puke.

Mohawk and Cheer Up Charlies are getting invaded by the new Hyatt. Red Eyed Fly and several others can barely afford the skyrocketing rent. Stubb's will be able to afford it indefinitely but once all the new people move in they'll probably complain about the noise till that gets shut down too.

Jesus. I love Cheer Up Charlies. Doesn't Hyatt already have the Regency there on the water and that gigantic Hyatt Place downtown?

Oh, that's right. I knew about that.

Those are actually nice. Usually resemble a 1BR/convertible type apartment. Full kitchen, couches/living room, etc. for the rooms. Affordable too. I've stayed in plenty.

But either way, that sucks. I love that area. Stubbs was my first taste of Austin BBQ, so I always have a soft spot for it...no matter how much I've moved on to bigger and better things.

It's such an awesome outdoor space. I think they're taking out (or already have) that concrete deep bench with the astroturf. And it sounds like it might lose some of the rock wall.

Won't matter if it closes though, I guess.

Mohawk is going to have to completely remodel their upstairs deck, a project they recently built and that was approved and permitted by the city. Due to new zoning with the Hyatt, it's been unapproved.

Sorry for all the questions, but I might come in a week early and catch Phish at the Austin360 Amphitheater, is there a shuttle that goes there, or does everyone mostly drive? Anyone else going?

No shuttle unless you arrange for one yourself. Uber/Lyft will get you there and back if you don't want to drive.
