Re: ~Official Pearl Jam Appreciation Thread~

I can't wait to see Pear Jam tomorrow at the Bridge School Benefit.

Soundgarden is there, too, so I'm hoping for some Temple of the Dog action. *crosses fingers*

Bridge school is great. Been to it twice, 2006 and 2011. Both awesome. Look forward to your review for tomorrow.

I thought it was really cool that Eddie was wearing a Soundgarden shirt in Memphis. I'm not sure why that resonated with me so much but I found it awesome.

In follow-up news that probably only I care about, I've now seen Pearl Jam 6-7 times and still never seen Yellow Ledbetter, but I saw Throw Your Hatred Down for the fourth time.

    What the everloving fuck.

Listening to S/T (Avocado - whatever you wanna call it) and I really, really love this album. It was the first album I really picked up. I had "acquired" a copy of Ten and it didn't do much for me as silly 9th grader but when I heard S/T I got Pearl Jam. I think it holds a lot of sentimental value to me because even as I listen now I can remember the day I bought it just driving around listening to it on repeat. Very vivid memories of that summer and everything going on in my life at the time. I know it's not their best album but it honestly might be my favorite purely because of the sentimental value.

    Just wanted to share.

we must be around the same age then, because I was just a little ways into my sophomore year when Ten came out, and I think I've said this before but I wound up practically having a ritual. I would always do my math homework first after I got home, and I'd do a repeat of Alive, Black and Jeremy every single day while working out the problems.

Are there many songs that you guys actually prefer the studio cut to whatever live version? I know it's probably not popular opinion, but especially considering Corduroy is likely my favorite PJ song, I still all these years later like the album version the best, because the tempo at which they've played it has just gradually gotten faster and faster over the years. I love the tempo of how it was originally done. They also do favorites of mine Given To Fly and In My Tree quite a bit faster than when first recorded.

I'm with you on the self-titled. It's easily in my Top 3-4 PJ albums, and most people think I'm nuts. That album brought me back to PJ. I had slowly drifted from them after Vitalogy. Nothing on No Code, Yield, etc had really ever connected with me much and by the time that Avocado came out I had stopped really paying attention to their new music anymore. I read David Fricke's review in Rolling Stone (he's one of the only music writers there that I respect anymore) of it and it was so glowing that it inspired me to go pick up the CD and try it out. It grabbed me right from the start, I loved the aggressive, rocking, back to basics nature of it, it just sounded so invigorating. I love every track on that record aside from Parachutes, and I think Inside Job might be the best song they've ever written.

^^ so you like Avocado overall better than Yield? wow... I feel comfortable in saying you're in a VERY small minority there But it's cool, different strokes

I do, and I know that will get me tarred and feathered in this thread.

Now, I will say that I've been gradually going back to the albums that I didn't give a ton of attention to over the years (No Code, Yield, Binaural, Riot Act), and I dug Yield A LOT more on the re-visit recently than I did originally back in '98 or whenever it came out, so those may end up growing on me.

I remember with both No Code and Yield, I listened to them a couple of times when they first came out, felt kinda 'meh', and never really went back to them. Binaural I don't know that I've ever listened to all the way through.

i'm not this way with many PJ songs. In my tree and present tense are perfect studio cuts that get played too fast sometimes live imo

I meant I discovered the album my freshman year of high school. I graduated in '07.

And AlexK, I'd rank S/T in my top 3/4 but that's not to say No Code, Yield aren't better albums. S/T just holds a lot of sentimental value to me which makes me rank it higher. I can listen objectively and tell you they're better albums but S/T just has the memories that make me think more highly of it.

I never find myself jamming albums from Riot Act onwards. I think there is some great music on the latest records, but I much prefer the 91-2000 releases, and yes I like Binaural a lot.

That's completely understandable. It is the better material. If you try to compare Go to Comatose, you can't. Go is a way better song but both are awesome.

So if they played No Code & Yield, and they're next up and due to be reissued…wonder if those shows were played for a reason.

they had to be, imo. i would guess bonus cds in the deluxe packages. they could be bonus vinyl in the super deluxe, i guess, but i'd be disappointed if the live vinyl wasn't a 96 or 98 show with jack irons.
