Re: Preseason NCAA Basketball Poll is released

IU gets ass raped for extra phone calls. UNC should get SOMETHING for this. Granted, I haven't read the full report, so I'm not in the best position to speak on it. Just wish the NCAA was more consistent.

I don't think it's as widespread and organized at appears to be at UNC, but nothing surprises me anymore. From the time I moved to NC to the time I left, there were always rumblings of shady stuff going on at UNC. How much of it was true and how much of it was little brother (State fan) trying to start stuff, I don't know.

I don't wish for any banners to come down, I don't even care if they get slapped with some kind of probation. The only punishment I wish upon UNC as that the phrase "The Carolina Way" gets retired for ever.
first bold - no clue. going to be bad.

second - widespread, sure, but it wasn't very well organized. one admin was responsible for the entire thing for like 14 years. it's almost as if too few people knew about it.

third - fuck the carolina way. that was toppling down way before even this

the problem is that they would be declaring players ineligible retroactively. I'm not sure how that works but it seems like it'd be a hard thing to prove

of course, the ncaa just makes it up as it goes along anyway, so I fully expect the worst

I doubt the NCAA does anything. The people that run it are afraid of their own shadows at this point.

yes, the WBB and football teams definitely did the latter part of what you're talking about.

however, imagine you don't know that the classes aren't really being administered and are being graded by an A.A. All you know is that one department has classes that give out high grades. Your job is to walk the line between "providing a good academic experience (whatever that means)/keep athletes eligible." What do you do? Is it wrong to note that certain classes/majors get high grades, and act accordingly?

Not that my athletic eligibility ever mattered, but I know that my fraternity had to maintain a certain GPA to continue to be allowed to throw parties, hold rush, etc.

Everybody in the fraternity knew that Music Appreciation with this one particular professor was a cake A. All upperclassmen told the freshmen in the fraternity to take the class. In fact, I took the class, and one day I decided I was going to the beach for the weekend and was going to miss the class. I had my roommate sign on to my email account and email the professor to tell him something had come up and I just couldn't make it. I had totally forgotten that we had a test the class session I was going to miss. When I got back I about shit my pants. I went to the professor and asked if there was any way I could make up the test. I thought I was going to be the first person in history to not get an A in music appreciation. The professor says "you sent me an email right? you've done pretty well on all your other tests so far so I'm going to just give you an A on the test you missed, too."

the class obviously was a total joke and had no academic merit at all. does my signing up for that class because I knew it was a joke rise to the level of academic fraud? does my fraternity pushing me to take that class b/c they knew if I did it would raise the overall fraternity GPA rise to the level of academic fraud?

again, I am speaking only to the segments of the athletic department (and fraternity row, and other groups) that simply knew the classes were easy. the people that knew the classes were being graded by someone friendly to the athletic department, and the people that specifically requested grades, fuck those people, they're idiots and deserve whatever they get.

all anyone cares about is banners. that isn't crying witchhunt, it's true.

banners come down, and all of the people / columnists who claim it's all about academics will magically disappear forever.

How would you not know? Again, I'm not well-versed on all the details surrounding this case, but if there were "classes" where attendance records and grades were faked and there was no professor, how would you, as the student, not know something shady was going on?

That's far different than signing up for fluff courses.

no, it was highlighting the logical fallacies of that position, which had been posited at the very top of this very page

the investigation needed to happen. I'm glad it was so thorough. Punishments need to come from it, and serious ones. However, the punishments need to stem from the facts brought to light in the report, not because somebody read a hot take from a reporter who puts up 3 bullet points from the 150-odd page report and says "throw the book at the entire athletic department"

I'm talking about independent study courses, which make up 99.9% of the investigation's findings, and which by definition don't meet.

So this started when Dean was there? I wonder if that's what made him retire when he did. I'd heard that he wasn't adjusting well to the younger culture and felt he couldn't relate anymore.

Not saying that should happen, but from my experiences athletic departments are pretty close knit. You'd have a hard time convincing me that, at least the major programs, did not know about this.

rodey this highlights something from earlier: either you believe the report or you don't. you don't get to look at the findings that are incriminating and say "oh the investigator did a great job there" but then look at the exculpatory findings and say "this is a joke."

Preseason NCAA Basketball Poll is released

Also, I think Roy looks worse if he did know about it and just quietly tried to get his players away from it (which from skimming is what I thought I read someone in here allude to earlier).

he couldn't relate anymore because he had alzheimer's. the guy was slowly losing it the last few years. had nothing to do with academic stuff; the report quite clearly stated that smith and guthridge had nothing to do with this. had nothing to do with younger culture.

no, skimming clouds understanding again---not directed at you, very popular to just take some sportswriter's word for what the report says

roy told his academic staff to get away from AFAM because 10 players were majoring in it of 15. He did not like how that looked.

he also told them to get away from independent study courses because he liked lecture courses where his players attend class sessions.

it's all the report, you just have to actually read it.
