Hamels is the kind of talent that deserves his salary, and he wasn't going for any less anywhere else.
As to the rest, this is why Amaro sucks -- those guys should have been traded for even one decent prospect, but he wanted the world. By failing to unload a single contract there's now no money freed up for next season, meaning we're going to languish in this state for at least another year.
The ONLY rational explanation I heard today is that it's possible that the ownership knows RAJ fucked up, he's on borrowed time, and they didn't want him making any deadline deals for complete lack of trust. I could see that, but I honestly just think they've gone back to being the clueless disaster of a front office they were prior to Gillick bringing in the necessary pieces to make us a contender.

I heard that theory on 97.5 too
Utley has obviously outplayed his expectations, but has he outplayed the salary hes being paid?
maybe, but thats only compared to other 2B's, not baseball overall. I Wanted them to trade Rollins or let him go a few yrs ago and then keep Utley...but to have 2 middle infielders at age 37 or so..ugh
Byrd has far exceeded expectations also. The problem with his contract is the ridiculous vesting option, and its the reason he couldnt be traded. Teams want to rent a 36 yr old hitter, not buy him for the next 2 years.
I'm not mad about the Hamels contract, he was just difficult to trade if they wanted to because of the years and $
and remember when we all wanted him to trade Lee last season? Looks like we may have a major problem on our hands for the next 2 years if he vests.
Is there a history of former players becoming GM's? I just feel like Amaro has given out too many ridiculous player-friendly contracts

There's zero reason he is still employed.

this is one of the issues with the Phillies front office as a whole. I'm all for loyalty (Amaro has been with the organization since 1992), but at some point you have to bite the bullet. I think the only way yesterday makes sense is if they do what Zilla said, and they are going to allow Amaro to resign at the end of the year
