Re: Official Oasis Appreciation Thread

So what does everyone think of the Beady Eye album? On my second listen now, and pleasantly surprised. I was not expecting much, but some of the songs aren't bad at all.

Definitely channeling The Beatles more than usual, though.

I posted this in the Album of the Day thread when I listened to it just after it leaked
    Quote:
This is literally 10 seconds after the last note finished, and I'm not sure about it. It's either nothing like what you expected (my reaction) or precisely what you expected. Once Noel left Oasis, and the others started their own thing, I thought it would give much more room for Gem Archer and, especially, Andy Bell, to be a part of the songwriting process. Given Bell's track record with Ride, I thought the sound would go more in that direction.

However, it turns out to be a logical progression from what Oasis was. If Oasis was more than a bit of a Beatles rip-off, then Oasis post-breakup is more than a bit of a rip-off of Lennon and McCartney's solo work. Liam's still singing great, and is ever the consummate frontman, but he's leaning closer and closer to sounding like 70s-era Lennon than he ever has before.

The bigger problem is that his songwriting, even with Bell and Archer, is just not up to snuff. The album tackles lots of different genres and moods, and Lillywhite's production is crisp (save for a few too many string and horn overdubs, but that smacks of Liam, not Steve), but at best, the songs sound like stuff Lennon and McCartney wrote for their solo albums and then wisely discarded. That, and they waste the talent of the musicians in the band, who never really get to flex their muscles. It's not an outright disaster, just completely unexceptional.

    2/5 stars
I haven't listened to it since then, which was a couple of weeks ago, so I need to go back and listen again.

I picked it up after work today...I only had time to get through the first 5 tracks so far, but to this point I am quite pleasantly surprised with it. The songs are a lot stronger than I expected them to be and Lillywhite did a nice job with the production as well. Liam sounds fantastic too. It's always good to hear that voice again.

It was way better than expected. That said, it wasn't great. Much more excited for Noel's solo effort.

I wonder what the first week sales for this will look like in the US?

When I got it at Best Buy last night the girl ringing me up goes "Gosh, EVERYONE is buying this today! Did it just come out or something?" I'm sure the $7.99 pricetag is a good incentive for people to take a flyer on it out of curiosity.

Saw Beady Eye at the Metro in Chicago on Saturday night. Solid show. They played basically the entire album and a couple of b-sides. Liam was in good spirits, shaking hands and joking with the people in the front. He was dressed in a giant, full length jacket with the Union Jack on it and his hair as as long as I've seen it. He sounded quite good. It was a fun show, but I couldn't help missing all those classic Oasis tunes. Still, it was nice to see Liam live again, he is captivating as ever. I applaud him for being willing to try and let this band make it on it's own merits, go back to playing clubs and not do a set full of Oasis tunes.

    Re: Official Oasis Appreciation Thread

Noel announced the details of his solo album at a press conference today! I am SO excited about this, much moreso than Beady Eye, as Noel really is one of my all time favorite songwriters.

The album will be called 'Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds' and it's out October 17th. (18th in the US.) He'll be doing a 'low key' solo tour of 'major cities'. (Praying for a Chicago date!) And he WILL be playing Oasis songs on the tour, saying "They’re my songs, I wrote them myself, I’m proud of them. Otherwise, it’d be like Paul McCartney just playing Wings stuff.”

He's also completed a second album that he just called 'experimental', a collaboration with Amorphous Androgynous, that will come out in 2012.

He also commented briefly on the split with Oasis and what he thinks of Beady Eye.

One of my all time favorites.

Anyone get tickets for any of Noel's solo shows?

I am so pissed he's not coming to Chicago, or anywhere in the midwest for that matter. Two shows in Toronto, but Chicago gets nada?!

I can't wait to pick it up tomorrow. It's been getting rave reviews so I'm really excited to hear it. Beady Eye's album was solid but unspectacular. I'm expecting much bigger things from The Chief.

Yeah, this whole Oasis split thing has just proven how Noel was the powerhouse behind oasis. Don't get me wrong, I love Beady Eye and I think it's a kick-ass album. But classic Oasis Songwriting is way more present on NGatHFB.

Liam says he would be up for an Oasis reunion in 2015 for the 20th anniversary of 'Morning Glory'

    http://www.rollingstone.com/music/ne...union-20111020

I'd love to see that. Take 5 years off, do Beady Eye and Noel's solo stuff, get back together in 2015 and play 'Morning Glory' in it's entirety in arenas!

I've said all I want to in the Album of the Day thread, but as much as I wish it weren't so, Noel's record is a fucking dog. He's circling the same drain he was with the last 3 Oasis albums, and the stuff he rewrites is the worst of what he'd done back when that band was still good.

Man I read your review in the AOTD thread - you and I like alot of the same stuff but I have to totally disagree with you on this one. I have only had one full listen but I really really enjoy it.

I have to disagree on the last 3 Oasis records too. 'Heathen Chemistry' yes, was kind of 'Oasis-by-numbers' but didn't have the soul of their early stuff. But I thought 'Don't Believe the Truth' was an absolutely outstanding record and stands up with their best work. 'Dig Out Your Soul' I thought had great stuff but was inconsistent. The first 7 tracks are fantastic, but the album really drops off in it's last 1/3rd. The final four tracks just seem phoned in.

Fine by me. If you like it, all the better for you. I saved "Stop The Clocks" to my hard drive and let the rest of it go away. I think I'm getting a little too "fossiliezed" when it comes to new stuff. God love my parents, but I can't stand the idea that the new shit around sounds like, well, shit.
