Yeah, I've heard a bunch of his interviews. He's awesome and I always liked him a lot more because of them.

Agreed on Noel - might be the best interview in music. He is utterly hilarious. Works best when you can actually listen to him, as I think often his British humor and tongue in cheek style doesn't translate as well in print.

Just saw Liam's band couple days ago. They were just ok. They did play Morning Glory though. That was pretty cool.

Saw them after their first album. First few songs sucked, Liam was screaming at the sound guy, then the rest of the show was pretty good.

They did not play any Oasis songs that tour, so that kind of sucked.

Got really into Oasis my freshman year of high school. Definitely Maybe and WTSMG are fantastic albums. All the live stuff frm 95-96 fucking rocks. Liam sounded amazing back then.

Be Here Now is so colossally underrated. There are some massive fucking tunes on that album.

Completely agree. Underrated even by Noel himself who basically disowns it.

It's funny, there's been a lot of revisionist history on the reactions to 'Morning Glory' and 'Be Here Now.'

When Morning Glory came out many of the reviews were average/lukewarm, however it's now hailed as one of the best albums of the decade.

When Be Here Now was released, the reviews were almost universally glowing with praise, hailing it as the band's crowning achievement, but when sales stalled ("only" 7 million copies worldwide, lol) people then started declaring it a giant misstep, self-indulgent, overblown, over-produced, etc.

I don't think any of this stuff is an inaccurate statement, though. The band was doing lines of cocaine like they were Al Pacino at the end of Scarface, and it shows in the sheer bombast of the music. Did "All Around The World" really need to be 9 minutes long, with all of those ridiculous horn and string overdubs (and a 2-minute reprise at the end of the album)?

I will also agree that there's some really kick-ass stuff in there, too: "D'You Know What I Mean?" and "Fade In-Out" are great, but by and large, the record's so over the top, so big, that it screams excess, right down to the album cover (compare it with the first one--the guys laying about a dingy London flat), which features them posed around the swimming pool of a posh English country house, with a Rolls-Royce sinking in the pool. Once upon a time, they sang about hopefully being a rock 'n roll star. Be Here Now is the result of what they did once they were rock 'n roll stars, and it can be kind of ugly.

the unplugged set is probably some of the greatest music to be performed from the last 30 years. so much better than AIC, Nirvana, etc when they did their unplugged set. and AIC's was fucking unbelievable.

I have a soft spot for Be Here Now because that was when I was completely obsessed with the band.

Just like I was ever since I first heard Live Forever. And just like I still am.

Yeahhhh, gonna have to go ahead and sort of, disagree with you on that one. It's really good, but chains, pearl jam, nirvana, and Clapton are all far better.

I like a lot of oasis' music but the production on all their albums is SO FUCKING UNNECESSARILY LOUD and the 17 guitar overdubs, especially on be here now, make some of the songs sound like just clusterfucks of sound. I think that album in particular would be served so well by a remastering similar to the Beatles let it be, just cut out a lot of the superfluous and overdone overdubs.

I'm fans of all those. nirvana unplugged got me into music, for the most part, back in 2000-2001 when i first heard it. PJ's is great and AIC is probably one of the most listened to things on my ipod. there's just something special about that oasis one. everything is absolutely beautiful about it. opinions are cool

That's my order as well. I'm not sure if your space was an indicator of a huge gap in quality, but I wouldn't put one there. I would put it after Dig Out Your Soul if I were to put one at all.

Not a HUGE gap in quality. But the first four I think are basically stellar from front to back, while the other 3 have their ups and downs, IMO. There are very few Oasis tunes that I actually dislike, but those albums, particularly Giants and Heathen, have a few that I'm sort of 'meh' on, like 'Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is', 'Better Man', 'I Can See a Liar' and a few others.

The amount of absolutely amazing b-sides Noel wrote is staggering too. If he had sat on those songs, they could have released another 2-3 full albums that were every bit as good as DM and Morning Glory.

    Fair enough.

I'm in agree that there are few songs I actually dislike, I just think that Dig Out Your Soul is really good and should be lumped with those other four. Heathen and Giants are easily their worst efforts, but both have some redeeming songs on them.

I've been trying to find a vinyl of What's The Story for a while, but they seem to fetch the big bucks everytime they come up for sale.

They need to do a reissue.

That's the one I went back and forth on - I almost put it up in that top tier. Perhaps I should have. Couple of tunes in the back half that maybe held it out for me, but I agree it's a great record. Very agressive. Good swan song for them.

And those were all coming out on singles during those first two albums. It was so much fun getting an EP worth of new songs every month or so. They were even releasing stuff in between albums, like Whatever. It was a prolific run.

    Re: Official Oasis Appreciation Thread

When they re-issued all the Oasis albums on vinyl a couple years back, I had no idea they were so limited. I was luckily able to score one of the box sets, which were limited to only 1100 copies. But I thought the individual albums would be available indefinitely. Chadizzy it wasn't until we talked about WTSMG in the vinyl thread awhile back that I realized those are tough to come by nowadays.

For those that got to see them live, what were some of your favorite shows? Mine would probably be a tie between the very first time I saw them - which was my senior year of high school in '98. They headlined the Rosemont Horizon (now called Allstate Arena) in Chicago on the Be Here Now tour and they were just mind blowingly good. Liam was probably at his vocal peak (IMO his vox on Be Here Now are his best ever - Don't Go Away gives me chills.) And Noel's mid-show acoustic set was unreal, he did Don't Go Away, Talk Tonight, a cover of The Jam's 'To Be Someone', and the tour debut of Slide Away. The full setlist:

From what I've read it's generally considered one of the best gigs of the entire BHN tour and I feel lucky to have been there. For anyone interested, the full show on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SZGH-ORHJGc

My #2 was probably 2005 at the UIC Pavilion in Chicago on the DBTT tour with Jet and Kasabian opening. 10,000 strong, sold out. Best seats I ever had for an Oasis show, we were on the floor, probably 10-15 rows from the stage. I'll never forget the roar when the lights went down and 'Fuckin' In the Bushes' kicked in and then the way the entire place felt like it was shaking when the band kicked into 'Turn Up The Sun' and the entire floor was bouncing like this rubbery mass of humanity.

Edit: And apparently that full show is also on YouTube! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cmtPtn4wTds Welp, my night is shot now.

Those were both awesome shows. I saw that 98 show and then went the next night in MN, and the Chicago show blew it away.

My favorite shows were in Milwaukee 96, first time I saw them. It was amazing.

And then at the Rosemont in 96, Liam backed out so Noel was lead the entire show.

Can't say I've ever been disappointed seeing them.
