Re: Do you own a home theater system?

I have a 6.1 surround system. All Klipsch speakers, with a Onkyo receiver, and a 55" Sony Wega HDTV. It rocks my face off.

I paid $285 (sale price) for a Yamaha system from Best Buy. I like it, though I have yet to really watch many movies on it. This is what I got:

I like it because the speakers are small. Better than my old system. Just gotta get my Ipod working with it right.

I have that exact system and I love it. I'm not an audiophile so I didn't need to spend thousands to be happy. I got it for $399 at Best Buy, goes well with my new plasma.

I'm going to purchase a HTIB system soon. I'm trying to decide between these two.

I have a 5.1 system (Radionette, Jamo, Pioneer, Sony) with a 32" and a very good DVD player. The sound is good enough but I would love a new HD TV.

I'm thinking about getting a klipsch system through accomadations.

    2x F-3 http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage....=1091101346130

    1x C-2 http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage....=1091101345861

    1x sub 12 http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage....=1099395911174

and a yamaha v-661 receiver. I'm pretty stoked about it...

I figured I'd update my own thread from 9 freakin' years ago.

I STILL have the same system I talked about in 2005. I'm looking to finally upgrade. Here's the thing: I'm guessing my receiver and subwoofer are still worthy of keeping. Maybe I should just upgrade to 6 new speakers?

dmbman I would consider upgrading everything unless you want to keep everything hooked up with legacy connections. No Blu-ray for you? Does your AVR even support HDMI? Not many did back when you first posted this thread. If you've had that Sony sub for 9 years you'll be amazed at how much better performance you can get without breaking the bank. You'll dig deeper, have more output, have less distortion and have flatter response from a newer sub.

I think that is my overall biggest question:

Would the $600 I spent on everything in 2005 be light years behind what I could get for $600 today? My current system is pretty good, but I'm wondering HOW much better would an overhaul really be?

My receiver doesn't have HDMI, but it does have an optical out cord. And I hook that up directly to my PS3. So yes, I do have Blu Ray.

Re: Do you own a home theater system?

Doby can correct me if I am wrong but there is a hell of a difference between Optical and HDMI. No support for DTS-MA and Dolby True HD if I remember correctly. For future proof I assume you would want some HDMI inputs. I have 6 on mine and they are all full...

Huge difference, what I spent $1500 on in 2005 you could get today for $400 and it would have many more features as UCFish points out above. Optical only supports lossy multichannel, HDMI gets you all video and audio in a single cable. Much tidier.

    Good to know.

Do you think sticking in a $500 budget would still be a worthy investment for a full system upgrade? Or I'm going to need to pony up more?

It would be worth, sure. You could get a satellite system that's 1/2 decent, then look to the future towards upgrading the centre and fronts to bookshelves.

I think I'll look at buying a brand new "home theater in a box" with a new receiver/speaker/subwoofer. This way, I'll not only get an upgrade from my current system, but my receiver should be good for future speaker upgrades.

    Does that sound right?

Re: Do you own a home theater system?

Mini update, for anyone who cares:

I ended up buying this new receiver below, and connecting it with my old HTIAB speakers:

    http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00CAAJDP6/...332200_TE_item

I can definitely say that, despite the old speakers, I absolutely notice a difference in sound quality on everything. Again, getting the HDMI ports, as well as a receiver that can read DTS HD & Dolby True HD, has certainly made a great improvement.

The question now is how & when I update my 6 speakers & subwoofer. I was THIS CLOSE to getting 3 new front speakers, but I didn't want to mix & match brands (as well as quality). So I'll probably replace all of them at the same time later in the year.

When I do, is it essentially just louder & clearer sound I'll be paying for? Thoughts?

When I was in San Francisco a couple weeks ago for vacation with my friends, we all stayed in an airBnB apartment that had Sonos. The owner gave us free reign to use it with her iPad....it was incredible. All music platforms - Spotify, Rhapsody, Hype Machine, Soundcloud, etc. - were all right there in the Sonos app ready for play. You could adjust volume levels in different rooms in the house right through the app as well.

Definitely getting one when i get my own place.

I've had the play 5 and play 3 now for almost two years and enjoy it. The sound is great and can pack a punch. I have the play 5 in the living room and the play 3 for the upstairs bedroom(s)/bathroom and it works great.

so the play 1 is decent? I was thinking about picking up one, but haven't heard it, I wanted a one more for the downstairs since I have the play 5 in the living room, the kitchen area gets neglected due to a wall.
