I personally think its pretty great from a social standpoint but from an entertainment business standpoint I think it is an INCREDIBLE tool. Between what I do with my band, what I've seen other people do with their artists and how I see actors, comedians, etc also benefit from it, there is really no reason not to be on. Unless of course you don't deal with any of that, or want to. But in general, making fun of facebook is silly because it is an extremely important cultural thing and an extremely important tool for upcoming artists in all mediums. (as long as they don't spam and get annoying like a bunch of cunts.)

It's always been in vogue for people (especially 35 & under) to rag on something that's become incredibly and massively popular all over the world (particularly if those who created the thing are fairly young themselves) something's been put up on this really high pedestal and no we absolutely can't have that so we're gonna tear that fucker down, etc... but it really seems especially trendy to engage in this kind of behavior over the last few years. Not really surprising giving the frequent and speed at which all manner of different things have popped up across the cultural landscape with technology advancing rapidly every minute.
There are always those type of people who just can't handle something (what they deem) having too much praise and attention, and really not even looking at the thing on its own merits, just that they need to tear something big down. Mind you, this isn't intended on being some spirited defense on the virtues of Facebook, not at all, that's just the particular example right now in the discussion.

Yea, I agree with all that. I guess I just don't see how someone's mind could work like that Anything that makes the world this small is brilliant I think.

This is part of the reason I think Facebook won't disappear:

but I guess it's all about mass volume.
I know some local promoters who pay each time their ad is clicked. Obviously, the ad that a person sees is based on their musical tastes. Kinda brilliant.

I voted that it will disappear, but I don't think anytime soon. I think a large portion of people will be fed up with it eventually, for every reason listed in this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8UouP8cRYZ8

I can't believe you guys that are thinking that it's going to be around forever -- The internet isn't even going to be around in it's current form in 10 years. I guess maybe Facebook will be around a decade from now in an entirely different form -- Sort of how Newspapers will still be around a decade from now, but not in any 'newspaper' form. If you stretch out a timeline long enough, everything becomes obsolete.

You can argue that Facebook has already received had a couple bad PR moves via the privacy issues.

Are you also saying that Google will fall at some point?
