I'm a pretty big fan (I love the Whiskeytown stuff too), but some of his stuff is pretty spotty. On one hand, it's cool that he releases nearly every single song he records, but some of his albums would be much better if he'd be more selective. I guess to make things interesting (and hopefully start a fight), I'll rank all his albums. I don't dislike the three at the bottom, but I have listened to them the least, so I assume they're my least favorites.

    1. Heartbreaker
    2. Gold
    3. Pneumonia (Whiskeytown)
    4. Stranger's Almanac (Whiskeytown)
    5. Rock N Roll
    6. Love Is Hell
    7. Cold Roses
    8. Demolition
    9. Jacksonville City Nights
    10. Faithless Street (Whiskeytown)
    11. 29

there seems to be a very large number of ryan fans that place heartbreaker miles above everything else. Don't get me wrong, the songwriting is phenomenal, but that one's a little slow for me.

    1. Love is Hell
    2. Rock N Roll
    3. Cold Roses

lyrically rock n roll is not as well thought out as his other releases, but i really love his sound, i also think it has the best flow of any of his albums.

Get "Heartbreaker" and "Gold". As for songs, I'd recommend starting with the following:

To Be Young (is to be sad, is to be high)
    Come Pick Me Up
    New York, New York
    Answering Bell
    When the Stars Go Blue
    Hallelujah
    Wonderwall (Oasis Cover)
    English Girls Approximately
    So Alive
    Let It Ride

I used to think I was a Ryan Adams fan. I really do enjoy Heartbreaker, Gold, and Rock and Roll, but that was it for me. I've seen him 4 times, and the last 2 were just brutal (Cold Roses tour and Jax Nights/29 tour...or somewhere around there). Now I know I am not the happiest person alive, but man, his last 3 cd's make me want to perch myself on a ledge and consider throwing myself off of it. I find myself in the mood to listen to that less and less. Maybe that is where I separated from his music.

    Re: ryan adams.

The first thing anyone should be told about Ryan Adams is that if you like artists loyal to one genre, you might hate him. He does singer/songwriter-soft stuff, folk/gospel rock (touch, feel& lose and tina toledo), alternative country(Jacksonville City Nights and parts of Cold Roses), classic sounding rock, and some of the grittiest rock and roll you'll ever heard in your life (this is it, 1974)

"New York New York" was the tune that somehow ended up on my ipod and got me to buy Gold. The rest of Gold is miles better than that song, but it's probably the best starter cd. The first couple songs on that album are very accessible, and they'll help you get into the rest. Heartbreaker was the third record of his i bought, I immediately loved "To be Young..", "Come Pick Me Up", and "My Winding Wheel". I still can't get into that record much besides "Oh My Sweet Carolina".

    Songs that hooked me:
Desire (this was even used on the show House, tomriddle)
    So Alive
    Come Pick Me Up
    Firecracker
    Chin up Cheer Up
    La Cienega Just Smiled

    My Favorite Ryan Songs now:
    The Drugs not Working
    Meadowlake Street
    Cold Roses
    Starting to Hurt
    Nuclear

All of "Gold" is great. Add "Gonna Make You Love Me" and "Somehow, Someday" to those 3 and that's my favorite RA stuff. I really should explore some of his other stuff, but I have to agree with merlecakes, Ryan can be a little down sometimes, and I like music to cheer me up, not make me

So i visit a ryan adams board frequently...and so do a few other people who post here on ants, and while i was in the library this evening they were all chattin it up about the trench coat man incident over on the ryan board. Ryan posts on that board (ryanadams.org)...and pretty frequently too.

He had this to say about Dave Matthews Band tonight:

DMB is fucking awesome man. the MSG shows were crazy fucking good. and the Busted Stuff stuff just kills live. it all does. for me though, its Crash. Crash just did it for me, and you see those guys live once, and thats all it takes. indie rocker snobs, metal dudes, it doesnt matter, live ONCE and they are in.
    true

I'd always wondered what he'd think of them, so for others who did too...
It would be cool if DMB posted around these parts. The other two boards i visit (a pete yorn board and the ryan one) both get frequent posts from Pete and Ryan respectively.

The guys from DMB post here pretty often actually...I guess I shouldn't be telling you this...but its under secret identities. Roi is actually Frank the Tank; Dave comes on as twk13; Butch is none other than dmbgodagirl41; and finally Stefan is Il Bacio Dolce. The other guys from the band stopped posting after reading a few of Stefan's posts. Also, they refuse to comment on why Butch and Stefan chose female aliases...but they did say that Dave's persona on this forum is very much like what he is in real life.

And yeah, I think I'm going to pick up Gold and Heartbreaker and give them a try. A friend also recommended The Suicide Handbook - is that one any good?

I personally don't have it. I think the only way to get it is through trading with fans. As far as i know many of the songs from the released records Demolition and Gold are on it, and since i had those i never bothered...i bet theres a substantial number of other tracks on it though, seeing as how ryan tends to release a ton of music on each disc, even on his released records that the label has to approve.

I fell in love with his stuff about three years ago. He's a fucking beast and Heartbreaker is one of the best albums I own.

I have some of his live stuff too, it's fantastic aswell.

    Some of my favorite songs:

    Chin Up, Cheer Up
    Oh My Sweet Carolina
    Angelina
    Drunk and Fucked Up

I'll post the 48 Hours demo later. It's legal to post and was recorded over two days, it's incredible.
