    Here's that Unreal 4 trailer I mentioned: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RSXyz...e_gdata_player

You've also got Crytek already modifying CryEngine 2 for the next gen, id has said that they're changing their engine after RAGE, and I'd be shocked if GTAV is running on the same version of the Euphoria Engine that LA Noire ran on. So the whole debate about graphics is pretty funny, as we don't know the stats of the new hardware, or what the new engines are going to be capable of.

How does that relate to gaming? Well, for graphics, yes, GPUs will continue to get faster. But, as an article someone posted stated, what if the bulk of the work was done in the cloud, leaving your onboard GPU just to do AA, and what the extra cores on a top of the line discrete PC graphics card do right now? Also, memory will play a big part. If these ship with SSDs that have a blurringly fast read/write time, paired with an optic device like the next generation of Blu-Ray that Sony has hinted at, which will be able to fit 6TBs onto an optical disc, you could have textures for daaaaaays, all being handled in an innovative way.

And there was a big hubbub earlier this year about a new graphics system that generates spheres instead of polygons, where a character would have billions of these spheres, instead of a few polygons. No longer would a rock just be a little physics particle with three polygons laid across it, it would be a mound of billions of little particles. At the moment, the tech is unrealistic, because it's hitting a natural bottleneck, because while it fundamentally works, no CPU/GPU pair in existence can render trillions of individual units on the fly in motion. It struggles to generate them while they're still. But if the tech can find a way to come down to, say, thousands or millions of particles, and the CPU/GPU/cloud computing combined can lower the bottleneck, it may be feasible. Not on this generation though, I'm talking a decade down the line.

TLDR version: lots of new possibilities. Every generation is believed to be the best, and then it's decimated by the next.

I only saw one place where they mentioned a couple rumored specs (hex-core CPU, 2GB DDR3 RAM). No mention of HDD type, but SSDs would be awesome. Also, only 2GB RAM? & DDR3? I was expecting at least 4GB of DDR4 or DDR5.

All of the big independent studios (Epic, Crytek, and id are on record) are all asking for no less than 8GB. They've officially put that out there, so I'd be shocked of they didn't get close to that.

Can't say, without seeing what's in it. I don't think we'll see a console launch with a higher initial price than the PS3, but that's just a guess.

I wouldn't be surprised, Sony right now is investing loads into OLED manufacturing. I was hoping we'd see a lot about OLED at CES 2012 but I think it's going to be just the small 22~27" screens until they can get costs way down.

From what I understand, right now a 40" OLED would list for over $15,000.

Still looks pretty sweet on the small units like cellphones, the Sony Vita, etc. I think Sony's 2013 CES for screens will be pretty impressive.

Panasonic are doing a lot of OLED R&D as well. I can't wait until you can get a 70" OLED for $4,999 that has 100,000 hours until 1/2 brightness, this will be the kind of image Pioneer were getting towards with their KURO displays, who knew it would take over 5 years to see other manufacturers starting to come close to the picture quality of their Kuro plasma.

A few more blogs and insiders are saying that there will be some sort of console announcement at CES, which as of right now, is 40 days away. Some people are saying that they will straight up announce the XB3, to be released in late 2012. Others are saying they are only going to hint at the XB3 and a summer 2013 release date, with the main presentation fully fleshing out XBL's TV services/partners, and maybe a new 360 designed for streaming as a focus, gaming secondary.

New scuttlebutt says that both MS and Sony could have console news at E3. Kotaku has the link, but it's 5am and I'm on my phone.

My guess: Microsoft has actual specs and maybe even a demo unit at E3, while Sony only announces plans, and doesn't have anything on the floor. Leaving maybe 6 months between their launches. Nowhere near as bad as Sony's mistake in 2005-2006, and that's coming from someone who bought a 60GB PS3 at launch. Closer to MS the better for Sony.

I did. As the comments pointed out, the core layout is for the current 360, so this looks like them covering their bases on old concepts. But I do think it'll be something they do. Europe and Asia have had their PS3 as DVRs for awhile.

Re: Possible new Microsoft console in 2012?

So more console news today, with one report saying that the GPU is going to be based on AMD's 6670 architecture, and the console will be out in October/November 2013. I personally still think that's on the late end of the possible range. The 6670 isn't getting any younger, so if it is based on that architecture, it would seem strange for them to wait that long. I still think there's a chance for a spring/summer release in 2013, but the window has definitely narrowed now. it won't be 2012, but it probably won't be 2014 either. I'm still excited, but they are really going to have to pump the shit out of the 6670. It'll come down to how much resources it's given. If it has 8GB of RAM, an SSD, and a beefy CPU architecture that can shoulder some processing weight, it could still be strong. But as it sounds, it'll probably be as good as my current PC out of the box.

But again, the improvements in performance largely come from the software side. So no judging yet.

EDIT: At the board auto-shortening the url to make it look like "next xbox already being made."

No doubt about it, to me. Microsoft wants their next console to be the center of home entertainment, as you can see with all the app rollouts recently. Wouldn't make sense for them to release a console that can't handle everything you throw at it. They'll pony up the money to include it.

Re: Possible new Microsoft console in 2012?

As I've brought up ad nauseum in the thread, releasing a new console doesn't negate the fact that the 360 still has years of profitability. If a new console drops September of 2011, the 360 will still outsell the new console, month over month, for at least 12 months, and will have game support past that. The PS2 is still profitable for Sony, and this generation will have an even longer life post-new console release than others, as they can transition from being a gaming center to an entertainment center.

But you always have to think 2 years in advance in gaming. That's the average development cycle in most big studios, with the exception being annual franchises handled by the same studios (read: sports games). So when you think of it that way, you begin to see why saying that the 360 has years in the tank left isn't the right way to be thinking, IMO. I've used it as an example before, but Gears of War 3 is as good as this console can get. If you look at how it optimizes every square inch of available power, it's as good as this generation of Microsoft can get. You can also use Crysis 2 or Battlefield 3 if you'd like, although I like using single-platform games, as you know they were designed just for that system.

And, realizing that GoW3 is about as good as the 360 can get, you then realize that development started for it in 2008, after the launch of Gears 2. The engine is from 2008. The textures were in development in 2009. You don't see innovation for years down the road. So saying that 2013 is too soon for a new console, in reality, is saying 2015 is too soon for a new console, as that's when you're going to begin seeing games that are markedly better than this generation. The first games on the 360 weren't leaps and bounds better than the XB1, they just had a processor that could handle new animation techniques, specifically particle effects. It was a few years after launch where you started to get truly great games, from a technical standpoint.

If you remember the 360 launch, one of the big 360 titles was the Peter Jackson King Kong game. It was developed separately for both the XB1 and the 360, and it was used to show the vast improvement of the 360. Here's that game, if you don't remember it: http://youtu.be/IwEpz3LeZx8

And, speaking of those yearly franchises, here's Madden 06 on the 360: http://youtu.be/DWUclELibqQ

Advancements can't happen until developers get access to new limits. If you're a Madden fan, at this point, you're going to be paying for slight tweaks on Madden 10 until a year after the next console (so hopefully Madden 14). Although EA will definitely be on board early in the new console's development, so it's possible their first entries on the XB3 are an improvement.

Re: Possible new Microsoft console in 2012?

Wow, reading the first bit back, I hope no one takes me as a dick there. Didn't mean to come off like that. But I just find it... I don't know, not weird, that's not the right word, but a bit funny when people say that they're not ready for a new console. First, the obvious point, don't buy it. It'll still be there in 2015. But second of all, if the XB3 were to come out tomorrow, the 360 still would have had one of the longest life spans of a console ever. The fact that we haven't heard anything solid about the next one is really the more weird thing, as, like I said, the 360 is ancient compared to past life spans.

More stuff today. The design must be coming together right now, for all these things to be coming out. Reports confirm some form of Blu-Ray, it will come with Kinect 2.0, and then a bit about having an anti-used games measure. That last bit is interesting, as the developers would certainly be for it, but I'm not sure exactly how it'd work.

Well, if this ends up happening, I shall not be buying any more XBox-Next Gen products.
