he used to have a huge strike zone though. some of the calls he got on the outside corner wouldnt even have a chance at being strikes today. not taking anything away from him though, the strike zone is just a bit different

Yea I've heard different announcers talk about that over the years, and I've always hated it. The game should be exactly the same for everyone, no matter who's on that mound. I think it's bullshit that a more revered, accomplished pitcher will get more leeway and a bigger zone from an ump.
Though I still have a pretty fond memory Greg Maddux-related from my childhood. It was the first time that my older brother and his friends were letting me join in their fantasy league for that season, and I don't know exactly how leagues are handled now, but back then (at least for ours) you had a certain amount of "dollars" to spend putting together your whole team, everyone had the same number. And it was like an auction, a given person brought up a name and you had to outbid everyone else in the room if you wanted to "buy" that player. Well it was I think Maddux's last year as a Cub, I just had a really funny feeling he was gonna pitch well that year, and I got him for SUPER cheap. He wound up winning his first Cy Young that season
