stand up is a back alley abortion that doesn't have a single song on it that should ever be played or listened to again

big whiskey is whatever

AFTW is the cry of "hey where'd everybody go? let me do this to try and get you to come back"

could not disagree more with the bolded.

I just prefer listening to the finished versions of songs too... YNK is utterly sublime.
Ok, you realize the FINISHED version of the song has three verses, right?

The third verse of Grey Street is critical in so many ways, especially lyrically.

I love the big three the most. I think tLWS is better than Busted Stuff. I like certain songs off Everyday, Stand Up and Big Whiskey. And I think Away From The World is a great album, the best since Busted Stuff.

The strength of DMB is playing live, there are several examples of songs throughout their history where the studio produced version of the song is decent but doesn't live up to what it is live. Although there are certain albums like Crash and BTCS that I love, I typically look at DMB albums as a group / collection of songs to bring on the road. As I wrote earlier the lack of consistent songwriting goes hand in hand with inconsistent tours. So, when I look at BS as an album and how it is produced it is mediocre but the same songs played live are some of the band's best, including my favorite Bartender.

Big 3 - Pretty universally incredible. The only reason any of us are here and why many here still dole out stupid amounts of money to see a band that's not very good anymore. Also ultimately set a standard the band would never be able to reach again.

LWS - Could very well have been their best album if they had completed. Instead, it ended up being the point at which the band (ie: Dave) lost it's drive to make truly creative art, which lead to...

Everyday - Trash. However, this album could've served as a wake up call for the band to get back to it's roots and realize who it actually was. Instead...

Busted Stuff - A hollow, lifeless corpse of tLWS. Literally sounded like the band hit record, played the songs and left. Provided some great live songs but was released solely to calm the hardcore fans not because the band understood Everyday was shit.

Stand Up - Rock fucking bottom. A band that was completely lost and devoid of any desire to make good music. Also the point at which the live shows really started going downhill.

BW - Easily the best album since BTCS. Nowhere near the same level as the Big 3 but there were some legitimately good songs on this album. I do think the band understood how bad Stand Up was and gave a decent effort on this album. Again, not great but after ED and SU it actually felt somewhat like a DMB album.

AFTW - Medicore. By this point, I don't think anyone was expecting a great album anymore which probably helped with how this was received. Pretty forgettable though outside of a few moments.

I don't think they rerecorded the LWS songs for us fans, I'm now leaning towards the band thinking: "This is horseshit that our fans are freely downloading our scrapped album, we need to be making money off of those songs."
At least that's what I believe was their approach in making Busted Stuff.

Fair point. However, it's still obvious the songs they did release were shells of what they were on tLWS and that the band wasn't enthusiastic about them. Their motives for releasing them are debatable.

Sure they can occasionally play a great a show now but when it comes to actually creating good new music, they're not good anymore.

I enjoy DMB live tracks more than studio DMB, enjoy an overwhelmingly majority of songs live outside of a handful in their catalog, like the newer stuff, hate Shake Me, can't guess songs by guitars, view tailgating as half the fun, want the sax solo in #41 and 3rd verse in Grey St to return, follow sets, seat snob... that's what kind of fan I am.

They have written a album full of material 2006 on that I love, including '16 songs, so for me they are still creating good material. And are still very much capable of creating great work.

Away From The World still proves that they can still make good music. It's good but not great. I actually listen to Stand Up more than Everyday or BW. I love that album. But the live shows are just not as good anymore. On so many songs Tim just kills it for me and I just prefer the piano over that annoying ass electric... with Tim making all those stupid ass noises. Sometimes it's fingernails on a chalkboard for me. IDK, I guess I feel like part of the band died when LeRoi did. I'll still go see them but it's not life or death like it use to be. Maybe I'm just older now and that part of my life is over...

I'm a Big 3 and LWS fan obviously.

LWS is better then busted stuff but busted stuff isn't bad and atleast we got YNK out of it.

Then you got everyday. It's was pretty darn bad considering where the band was at that point in history. But now I think it's alright. Certainly better then stand up. Stand up is the worst garbage ever.

BW and AFTW are both ok. I perfer BW. But a lot of songs on both of those albums I don't like live

    Squirm
    You and me
    Time bomb
    Seven
    Shake me
    Belly belly
    If only
    Spaceman
    Rooftop

Are all songs I could do without live.

As far as the type of fan.. I'm what you would call a hardcore fan. Well I think we all are here. But when I go to shows I perfer to hear the old stuff and the rare stuff. Give me JTR, Raven, crazy easy, seek up, last stop, say goodbye, dreaming tree, typical, warehouse, DIDO, nancies, spoon, hello again, the stone, 34, minarets, sweet up and down, rapunzel, kill the king, busted stuff, YNK, ditch, bartender, two step, TSTJL, tripping billies, pig and many many more you get the point.

I'm not going into the shows wanting to hear crash, you and me, cornbread, satellite, seven and Jimi and smooth rider or whatever the fam wants to hear.

And as an update... BW is good. Away from the World is better with Snow Outside being one of the best love songs Dave has written
I'm a huge fan, but I guess in regards to the poll options I'm also more "Independent".

The Big 3 are the greatest albums the band has produced. As a massive DMB fan that is just undeniable. I like really Everyday and I enjoy Stand Up for what it is. On top of that, the Stand Up songs transferred to the live setting very well, as did Everyday. I'm a big fan of Big Whiskey as an album, but I think some of the songs fall flat in the live setting. That was a great album that seemed to re-energize the band and seemingly pull them out of a creative funk. However, it was also the kick-start to a more aggressive rock band sound that I'm not as much a fan of. I love Away From the World. I think it's a great album that brought the band back closer to their older sound while mixing in little elements of the band's sound through the course of their career. It's also a great piece of work from an older, more mature band.

As for The Lillywhite Sessions vs. Busted Stuff. This has always been tough for me. If you take The Lillywhite Sessions completely out of the picture then Busted Stuff is an absolutely fantastic album. I think had LWS never leaked that Busted Stuff may have become a Big 4 album. Great songs with very solid recordings. But because I've heard The Lillywhite Sessions there are just some songs that had undeniably better adaptations. I think I give the edge to Busted Stuff only because it was a more complete, and official, album. Busted Stuff has better recordings of "Busted Stuff", "Grey Street", "Raven" and "Kit Kat Jam". It also has "You Never Know", which I believe to be one of the greatest songs of all time, and I have always liked "Where Are You Going?". I'm indifferent on "Digging a Ditch". I love the little sax and record player sound at the end of the Lillywhite version, but the song as a better sound on Busted Stuff, so I guess BS wins that one too. On the flip side, LWS has some of the most beautiful studio work the band has produced in "Grace is Gone", "Captain", "Big Eyed Fish". "Monkey Man" Is really great as well. With that said, I still really enjoy the Busted Stuff version of "Grace is Gone", but "Captain" doesn't do much for me. The LIVE version of the BS "Captain" is fantastic though. As for Bartender...I think I may be that rare person that prefers the BS version. Roi's work at the end of the LWS is phenomenal, but as a completed song/recording I give the edge to Busted Stuff. Up until Roi's sax solos at the end of the LWS version the band just sounds bored, mainly Dave.

...totally forgot about "Sweet Up and Down" and "JTR"...hmmm..."JTR" sounds great on LWS, but "Sweet Up and Down", while a great song, it definitely sounds a little flat. The ending is great, but yet again, the band sounds bored and Dave sounds like he'd rather be anywhere else than a recording booth. Even Carter sounds like he'd rather be doing something else. He sounds bored or annoyed when he counts the song off in the beginning.
