Not a bad idea.

I hope it's eventually a PS4 app, but apparently Sony is also developing their own streaming content platform. So, I kind of wonder if they'll not let the SlingTV app be developed for the Playstation.

Interesting. It was basically a giant ad for their stock buying services and it was written like it was trying to clue in 50+ year olds about how TV is changing, but the information in it was true enough. The article did make me realize I should have named the thread "Television 2.0" instead. Much catchier.

They were pitching Disney, discovery, and some ther company.

Interesting to think the bandwidth could be 10x today and Google is inverting in it. And Apple being right there dominating in TV sets.

Industies do change and it's amazing how quickly something can become obsolete.

Trying out Sling for the free trial week. (Note: if you sign up and cancel right away, your subscription goes the full week and won't be charged. In case you're (like me) bad at remembering to cancel later) it's a cool idea that will work for a lot of people, which was mainly sports. However, I don't see myself using it. I have NetFlix+Hulu and I enjoy watching what I want when I want, not random channel surfing. Any sports I like are all on national tv anyway.

It's nice to see people liking this, though. Sends a nice message to the jagoff cable companies, change your model or lose customers.

With Sling TV, there's a catch with sports, mainly CFB and NFL games not being broadcast, or something like that right? I thought I saw that somewhere, figure someone in here will know quickly.

I've found it interesting that for myself, I don't even care if in the end, I'm paying roughly what I'd pay for a low end cable deal, if I'm actually getting what I want. If I can use Netflix+Hulu+Sling+Digital Antenna to get all my shows, a few local stations and most sports (I also have the $1.99 NFL Mobile during the season), then I'm a happy camper.

He didn't say, but he lives near Syracuse, NY - so he can probably get more then me. Looks like I'll have NBC, Fox, ABC and 3 others I'll never check out, but definitely worth it. And getting a mounted antenna for the roof doesn't appear to give me more network channels, if antennaweb.org, so I may very well look at that one you linked on newegg. Thanks -

Since my knowledge of antenna technology stops at the rabbit ears days, do the indoor antennas go HDMI > receiver > TV?

IMO, this is nothing new. The ability to simply watch shows and movies when you want has been around for a long time with torrents. Streaming is really picking up these days, and much more convenient, but the ability to do so has been around for many years. Of course, I'm describing the illegal end of things.

At this point, I'm more interested in Sling than anything else. I can't imagine only having access to content, and not a streaming simulcast of a channel, at least not at this point. Maybe this stems from the fact that I constantly switch channels when watching tv? I can't really explain it I guess. Right now I have cable, and with that access to all the movie channels and their on demand content services (through the cablebox and through the standalone apps and websites). I find that outside of Hbogo and netflix, I don't use any of them.

The easiest way to do this, I would suspect, is to just hook the indoor antenna up to your TV as you normally would, and then output the sound from your tv (via optical or RCA) into your receiver.

I had been cable free for a couple of years until I moved in to my new house. I intended to sign up for Charter internet only and due to the timing of it (the day before Thanksgiving), they offered to give me their silver channel package, all the premium channels, and free DVR and HD for $29/mo for a year (normally $79 before adding on premiums). I wasn't interested in TV, but at that cost, I'll deal with the fluff I don't tend to watch if it gives me access to local sports broadcasts (especially this upcoming Twins season). Once it goes back to regular price, I'll drop down to just internet.

Yeah it goes into the regular old cable input on your tv, then you can do what you will with the sound. I did the above. I have cable now becuase my apartment complex pays for the basic service, so it's kind of worth it to just pay for the DVR and HD, compared to being a cable cutter with Netflix and Hulu. But for the year and a half prior to that I was a cutter.

    I had this antenna

Got ABC, Fox, CBS, NBC, and our local Peachtree TV, among a bunch of other lesser channels. Depends on how close to you live to your transmitters. This site is a fantastic tool. Put your address in and it'll show you what you can expect to get.

I will also point out I was using an email address on my ex's family's Comcast account that got me access to ESPN and HBOGo on Xbox.

College football really wasn't a problem with that, combined with the antenna channels.

Baseball is the biggest hurdle when you live in your team's home market. I used a couple of shitty stream sites which worked like 95% of the time, had crappy quality, but got the job done. Wiziwig and vipsports.

NFL games might not be broadcast over Sling, but just get a simple Mohu Leaf antenna and you'll be able to get them for free over the air in full HD+5.1 except for NFL Network games of course.

As of now, Chromecast does not support Amazon Prime. Probably because Amazon has their own HDMI stick

The thing I don't like is you can only stream to one device at a time. Other than that it seems good to me. Going to try it out at the least

if you don't have another device with Amazon Prime video, the least you could do is connect a computer to your tv. I've had mine hooked up with hdmi for a few years now.

Stream through your Google Chrome browser and use the Google Cast Extension in the browser to cast your stream via Chromecast to your TV.

The Chrome Browser and Cast Extension is a great way to stream stuff to your TV you normally wouldn't be able to because the Chromecast itself doesn't support the media.

Hey guys -- Thanks for the feedback.

So I fired up my laptop last night and streamed amazon instant video through Chrome and then cast(ed?) it to my TV.

The audio came through well but the video was choppy. About once every 15-20 seconds it would lag. Maybe its my TV or internet connection?

I've tried the same thing in the past and have had the same issue with the video lagging. I'd say its the internet connection, but the apps (Netflix, HBO GO, etc.) stream just fine.

Do you have Playstation or XBox? I'm pretty sure both have Amazon apps.

You're talking about Sling TV, right? Yeah, that does suck. I have to believe they will ease up on that in the near future or at least add an option of paying like $2 more per month to add second streaming connection or something.

Your laptop was near the dongle, right??
Yeah it was ...I'll give it a try again tonight. I appreciate all the help.

I don't have a preference of where I rent my movies. I rented from Google Play last night and cast that to my TV and it lagged too. I read reviews online and a lot of people had that same problem.

Its not the end of the world. There is a lot of content on Netflix that I enjoy but every now and then I want to be able to catch a movie not on Netflix.

Do you have Playstation or XBox? I'm pretty sure both have Amazon apps.
Yeah I do -- I can always use the Xbox as a backup plan. Its just that its usually being used by someone else!
