Re: Be Yourself - New song?

So I've listened to it a few more times, and have decided it would be worlds better if he just didn't sing any actual words. It could be a fun little ditty to lighten up the moment you realize the ladies are on stage. I just can't get into the song cause the words are too pitiful to sing . . . Even in my own mind.

Maybe I'm misinterpreting it as something else, but at least it leaves itself open for that kind of stuff.

Also it's a very horn driven song and according to those posts yesterday on Twitter or Instagram they were working with a brass band in the studio. That's not to say they weren't playing on another song, but this definitely would fit that mold.
This would fit the RS article talk of trying out some songs on the road. Maybe the horn part was road tested before being recorded this week.

Curse you, Be Yourself. A pox upon your family.

You could say that about a bunch of tunes. One thing I'd love to see that I know won't happen: I would love to see DMB release an instrumental album - no lyrics at all.

"Love is love, no matter what it looks like"

Sounds like something Michael Jackson would say to justify what he was doing with kids.

I like Be Yourself instrumentally, I just find the lyrics to be ho hum.

Black and Blue Bird on the other hand was a step in the right direction mostly.

I've been saying the same thing. Dave can't write anything more than middle school crap poetry lyrics anymore. But they keep churning out good music. Keep it instrumental, kind of like the sound check jam from LT 33.

"I Need a Word", a song written for Sesame Street, has more value as a song than "Be Yourself". I'll add that he sang this with Grover...a blue puppet with someone's hand up his ass...

I'd rather listen to Grover than the Lovely Ladies.

They should offer up the next album with or without lyrics. Customer choice

Well we had an official LL poll here...that turned out great. I don't know what sort of source we could point the band to that they'd actually take seriously.

"I am sad, and I am mad, and I don't have a rocket" certainly has more depth than "boyly boy, girly girl, mista mista, sista sista."

Although I do know of one person who might like the "mista mista" lyric.

Completely agree. I shouldn't have worded it as 'not nearly as bad.' Makes like I think it sounds its still pretty piss poor. I don't.

Re: Be Yourself - New song?

I agree the lyrics are atrocious and the derka derka doo doos sound EXACTLY like if SNL tried to parody every Dave Matthews song or something.

The Lovely Ladies add nothing, but I don't think they make the song any worse than it is.

I also think the song got more of a bad wrap simply BECAUSE the Ladies were on it for its debut.

All that being said, musically this song is SO MUCH BETTER than people are giving credit for. I'm not saying it's top tier, or even mid-tier, but it does NOT deserve to be trashed as much as it has (again, MUSICALLY). I think many people jump on the bandwagon here. And they're also afraid to say anything positive in fear of being ridiculed or laughed at. Bad vibes lately...

But anyway, the horns are on point, it goes some interesting places (that building part is fun), the guitar riff is pulled straight from ASTB at parts which I personally like.

All I'm saying is this song is like the Y2K for the DMB. Everyone's getting out their "The End Is Near" signs but guess what... The band's gonna go on just fine.

    Just my humble opinion.

Despite the almost universal hatred towards this song, it's getting more credit than it deserves by calling the music "good". It's nothing special really. Louisiana Bayou is 10x better musically than this pile of shit.

I think I'm settled with this. Dave dropped a major deuce - has before, will again. I'm still going to scream like a little girl (well, it'll be more like a YEAAAAH) if I hear the first three notes of Seek Up tonight. Hopefully the fam reaction won't cause this to be played 30 times this tour. Please dear god don't let this song be on the album.

Hahaha okay, I did have a wrap for lunch. It was a good wrap, though not great. Maybe that's how I let that one slip.

My bad on the dumb typo, you guys. Just like Ants to let something inconsequential in a post overshadow the rest of its thought-out point.
