That got the ESPY for Play of the Year that year.... and it shouldn't have.

There was a local basketball player here that year who got a rebound of a missed free throw (state championship game with about 5 seconds left) in the opposite corner of the court, sprinted up to half court, got bumbed by his own player, and pump faked a defender in mid-air to make a crazy half-court shot to win the 5A state championship basketball game..... and he was going up against Jeter for the ESPY. The kid should have won by a mile.

Jeter's play diving into the stands was WEAK...all he did was make a running catch, and because he dove into the stands (which was probably completely unnecessary) it's an amazing play. I believe David Wright (or someone else) made a similar dive into the stands in a similar position this year, except that he had to actually dive into the stands to actually make the catch...

Ozzie's was great. Willie's was great (the throw back in was better than the catch). Edmond's catch was great. Jeter's toss in the ALCS against Oakland wasn't a great play as much as it was a SMART play. And Oakland's runner being a dumbass not sliding helps out. As for his diving in the stands catch, a kid for Wichita State U. did something similar. It was up for an ESPY. So stuff like that happens quite often; Jeter has the name recongnition.

One for discussion (it wouldn't rank up with the three, but awesome nonetheless) was Bo Jackson, from the base of the wall, throwing out Harold Reynolds. After Bo picked it up, the ball never touched the ground.

Can't be that bad. We only robbed you of what would have been the first of back to back titles...man that feels good.

Edit! Woops, what would have been the 2nd of a 3-peat...that's a lot better

It was Pokey Reese who made the play you'rer reffering to earlier in the game. Jeter made a great catch, it was not one of the best ever by any means. It just looked spectacular because he had no choice but to dive into the stands. If he pulls up at full speed he could turn an ankle very easily. If he runs into that low wall in left he flips into the stands and risks injuring his neck or back. He made the right choice for his safety, that made a great play look spectacular.

Want great plays... watch some highlights of Willie Mays, Mickey Mantle, Ozzie Smith, Omar Vizquel, Lou Whitaker, or Ken Griffey Junior... all of them have webgems that belong on film in the hall of fame.

Personally, as far as sheer shock, surprise, amazement, and happiness nothing defensive comes close to Derek Jeter racing into foul territory, halfway down the FIRST base line, snaging an errant throw, and in one motion making a PERFECT flip toss to Posada without breaking stride to nail Jeremy Giambi at the plate and preserve a shutout. That's definately the most improbable and amazing play I've ever seen by a shortstop, possibly by anyone. Add in the playoff situation, clinging to a late game one run lead in Oakland, on the verge of elimination being down 2-0 in a 5 game series. Making that play almost defined Derek Jeter, that demonstrated a player who will do ANYTHING to win and NEVER gives up! If memory serves that was the same series as his famous flip into the stands in the ninth inning of game 5! Jeter's not the leagues best shortstop but he makes some amazing plays and that flip was far and away the best. Love him or hate him Derek Jeter wants to win as much as anyone in sports today!

That play was absolutely incredible. Not only because he made it, but because he was there to make it. being in the right place at the right time isn't just luck -- it's innate in great players. best hitting shortstop in the league? nope. best fielding shortstop in the league? nope. i'd still take him over just about any other ss.

I hate the Yankees, but I agree this play was one of the best I've seen. Especially because he really had no business even being in that part of the field for that play.

2nd time in a year that Mike Lowell pulled off the hidden ball trick.

    http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/recap?gameId=250810128

    Quote:
"I looked to first to see if Tony Clark was going to advance, then I looked at third base," Lowell said. "Both guys had their heads down so I just held onto the ball to see what would happen."

Despite the absence of any signal from Lowell, Jones(the pitcher) -- who said he hadn't seen the play since 1986, when he was in high school -- understood what his teammate was up to.

"When I didn't get the ball, I figured it out by the process of elimination," Jones said. "I just walked around and tried to stall. I was running out of things to do. I was going to touch my toes."

Just as Jones was getting ready to give up the charade, Terrero took his lead off third base. Lowell sauntered over and tagged the stunned baserunner, who was immediately called out by third base umpire Ed Rapuano, drawing a roar of approval from the crowd of 20,443.

That's fucking awesome...I mean, if it doesn't work and the runner doesn't come off the bag you have to throw the ball back to the pitcher and you end up looking like a douche.

I am not a Yanks fan AT ALL, but this is what immediately comes to mind for greatest defensive play ever. It has a superhuman feat, high stakes, important game, and the 'jaw-drop' factor all going for it.

The barehand catch is impressive but more of a novelty than anything else.

Not according to the one person's view who mattered.

In all honesty it was so close I couldn't tell. Still can't to this day, not even in the replays on my DVD's.

It was a great play, but too much credit is given to him for being all the way over there. Yeah its an odd place for him to be, but as a shortstop, and team leader, it is your job to back up anything and everything possible. Thats something they teach you all the way up to the majors. I played leftfield most of high school, and I always backed up throws to third base from rightfield. A player with good instincts should know where that throw was going, and shouldn't we expect every MLB SS to have good instincts.
Oh and Giambi should have slid.

Also, the head first in the stands takes guts, but I have seen many players catch it full speed in the stands, not catching it and then going into the stands. It takes more guts for an outfielder to go full speed to the wall and catch it.

I'll have to go with Ozzie's play as #1. Mitchells play in left field was real good. Jeter's dive in the stand was WAYYYYY over rated becuase it was his momentum that carried him into the stands he didn't dive into the stand to catch the ball. Jeter's play against Oakland was good but it wasn't :shock amazing. It was just a good player being in the right place at the right time in a real big game.

Wright's catch the other night was good and most likely will be the best this year.

Nah...Someone hit a double down the third base line with Reynolds on first, and Bo goes in the corner, right up against the fence and fires a laser to home plate, right to the catcher to throw out Reynolds...Maybe not the greatest catch, but the throw was absolutely out of this world...

How about Jim Edmonds? That guy has made a million incredible catches, but there are two that stick out.

1.) The one against Cincinatti last year where he scaled the wall and backhand caught the ball over the wall.... SICK.

2.) NLCS Game 7, 2004. He covered so much ground to track down this ball. And he then dove out towards the wall and was able to catch it... The Houston Astros would've gone to the World Series last year instead of the Cardinals if he didn't make that catch... And you know what else? They might've won it. So everyone in Boston can thank Jim Edmonds....

I'm allways a fan of the unassisted triple play. (Think they're were only three all time)
