Re: Pono Kickstarter has DMB option at $400

My two cents:

Unless they're willing to adjust the price of the music in the PONO store, I think they'll always remain a VERY niche market. If their goal is to bring fidelity back to digital music then a) 192k is way overkill at this point, and b) it needs to be priced equal to iTunes/Amazon. Its all digital here folks. There's no special packaging or anything... its all storage. Yes, more storage is needed, but hard drive space is getting cheaper by the day. There's no good reason it should cost more. Ever.

Should be made clear that this isn't a new audio format being introduced, simply a way to have access to existing formats that have been unplayable until now.

I am still savoring the kool aid myself and will continue to do so until I find out they're not creating these files from original analog tapes. There's no sense in doing anything different. I will DEFINITELY stand in line awhile to hear some of Dylan's early material un-molested in this format. Shit, even any of DMB's material before they smashed it for digital release.

Sounds like folks aren't into this idea. For me, it's exactly what I'm looking for. I'm not interested in audiophile equipment enough to invest thousands like some do, but I'll happily invest 3 or 4 hundred for a digital player with decent components and a nice DAC. I've been using the same iPod since 2004 (10 years!?! geez I didn't realize that until this minute), it's time for an upgrade I think. I'll have to grab a set of better headphones now to go with it. Can anyone recommend a nice set for $100ish with a flat response that doesn't color the sound?

Bowers & Wilkins P3 headphones are a great choice

Lefsetz' piece has little substance and sounds more like Neil told him one time to go and get stuffed and now he's jaded. Crowdfunding is so two years ago?

    Erm...$3,965,490 pledged of $800,000 goal

Well they announced the two albums that will be on the DMB LE pono player. They are CD QUALITY copies of UTTAD and Crash. WTF is the point of that? I'm willing to bet 99% of the folks willing to shell out $400 for a high end DMB themed music player already these two albums on CD and can rip them as needed. Lame.

Browsing your post, got excited when I saw UTTAD and Crash, which immediately got crushed when I saw CD quality files.
No thanks, I'm not shelling out $400 for that. Maybe one day when they release their catalogue in 24 bit .

In addition during the Q&A Pono staff member "Daniel" said they would only release albums that did not have dynamics reduced and those two albums, while not loudness wars poster children, are NOT dynamically open.

Crash has copious amounts of clipping.

    Snake oil.

I wonder if we'll get lucky and these are not just CD rips, but remastered versions of the original mixes at CD quality? I know, I'm probably just dreaming.

I can't imagine ever paying 25 bucks for a digital download of an album... Regardless of the sound.

True it's pricey at the moment. I'm just excited to see alternatives to MP3's being introduced to the market. Hopefully this is the beginning of a new era of sound quality.

I question everyone's commitment to high end sound quality if you buy a Pono over this: http://fortune.com/2015/01/06/sony-1100-walkman-ces/

I'm sure it will be between 3-4x better than the Pono. It has to be, right?

I have one of the Dave Matthews Limited Edition models. It's absolutely awesome sounding, a HUGE difference. Too bad there isn't much hi res music available from DMB though. I've mostly been listening to other stuff... Floyd, Pearl Jam, Neil Young. Norah Jones is on my list next.

Lol at the 16-bit PCM they're shipping with.

They need to do it like Yes is doing with their releases:

    1. 24/192 stereo flat transfer of the analog master
    2. 24/96 stereo remix
    3. 24/96 5.1 remix
    4. 24/96 needledrop of an original A1/B1 vinyl pressing.

    This literally satisfies every group.
