Better than a shitty song played amazingly, no?

That Dreaming Tree doesn't sound good, but it's still fucking Dreaming Tree. It can't suck that bad, no matter what happens.

Totally disagree. It's not like I'm asking for it, but I would like them to start playing songs whether it was perfected or not. If they play it shitty for the first couple times so be it. At least they are playing something from what's been the norm the past 5 years.

replace it with a nice typical situation, or pay for what you get. don't replace it with a BW song which is crap.

Good point. I'm very alarmed by the absence of PFWYG for the past while. That's one of the few studio songs that I've never heard live. If I don't get it at the Gorge, in a year like this, it's never meant to be.

Maybe I just look at it a different way.
I look at these guys as some of the best musicians in the world, who have been playing together for 20 years (most of them). With the same songs in their catalog playing 50 shows a year traveling together, making millions of dollars a year. It shouldn't take them a few times to perfect a song they've had in their catalog for 17 years. Especially after a one month break and it being one of their best songs of all time.

But this is why I don't travel to see the band and only listen to their old stuff.

    *end elitist snob rant.

with 3 nights at one venue, i thought the greek was a lock.

for some reason they had to play TMTT, and sugar man though. slip slidin is the best of the cover bunch, and that wasn't even played!

    fixed that for ya.

you're spot on, as usual. its embarrassing that the band has these issues, and even more embarrassing that people actually defend the band in this regard.

Yeah I agree....was bummed not to hear it...not really expecting it at Gorge.

The speeded up version takes away from the song but maybe they felt playing it slow was a crowd energy zapper. Personally slow it down and jam that mutha out!

While I largely agree that this version was subpar, the horns and Tim play really well on the outro. If only the song didn't suffer from lightning pace.

It's unfortunate, but the days of getting passionate performances such as this, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6ecZL8TBox4 are long gone! Dave especially, does not put much of his soul into performing anymore.

Honestly they may just have not practiced it much and kinda winged it and thats why it sounded like crap. Carter sounded confused with how to play it at the start. If they sat down and rehearsed it a bit it be back to how it should sound.

I'm not defending the performance or saying it's acceptable, I just don't want Dave to not play songs for fear it's gonna sound like shit. Which has become a problem along with his affinity for certain songs.

I'll put it this way. I'm going to the Gorge this weekend and I would rather hear them play this song again and try to play it correct, then have it be replaced by Squirm or something like that because Dave is worried about how it is going to sound.

Really it comes down to the point that if they had more variety in their setlists and played songs 10 times a tour instead of twice, this more then likely wouldn't be a problem.

Who cares. They played it fast. It was one time. They play everything fast now. Faster is the new jam. Fast. More fast. Extra more fast.

Then We'll be offstage by 1030 to go "rehearse" to be faster for tomorrow. We'll tell all the fans we're rehearsing new parts but really we're just figuring out how to make the shows faster by cutting out more and more parts and playing the older parts faster. 23 songs. Fast. Acoustic and Electric. Extra fast for electric. 11 is just too late to play a rock show. Dreaming Tree was a request. Let's just get it out of the way fast.

The feel is all wrong. On Dreaming Tree and plenty of other songs. Not just for a night, but for a tour. Who decides that? Do they set a tempo on click track early in the tour and just play to that? I'm not kidding. They must. Why not slow songs down, or speed up slow songs? I thought that's basic element of why we love this band. Variety. Even if the same song are played in the same night, play them differently. I gaurantee Dreaming Tree is played at the Gorge fast again.

The bolded, easily. I am willing to consider that the best Dreaming Tree of all time. That version is absolutely ridiculous. Carter absolutely dominates the ending.

Buy Live Trax 39 and then thank yourself for doing so later. There's a low grade quality tape of that show as well, but I suggest just coming up with the $13.99 for the disc, or the $11.99 for the digital version.

Well next time I will google instead of just searching on youtube. I have LT39 and agree thats a great DT! I really like the Two Step before it as well.

    Gotta respectfully disagree man

It's a solid version, but nowhere near the Piedmont version. That version is so incredibly unique and basically goes type II (Phish term where the jam leaves the original song structure improv wise). One of the best "grooves" ever for a DMB tune imo.

Listening to 10/29/98 and this one is a tad better than 10/31/98 imo

It's a solid version, but nowhere near the Piedmont version. That version is so incredibly unique and basically goes type II (Phish term where the jam leaves the original song structure improv wise). One of the best "grooves" ever for a DMB tune imo.

Listening to 10/29/98 and this one is a tad better than 10/31/98 imo
every time I listen to the Piedmont version I cringe at about the 9 minute mark when Rashawn starts what i can only call his trumpet blowing......

I enjoyed this version a lot. When did they start doing that break down by Carter after the horns? When they go into that funky time signature. Old versions don't do that.

Edit: That's a helluva opener too. Damn.

    Re: Dreaming Tree..

The 10/98 versions are massively better than Piedmont Park to me, nowhere near the same energy as Carter has during the '98 versions...and he does the same in the 07.25.98 version also including Greg Howard. All five of those '98 performances listed feature Greg on Chapman Stick. The main strong structure is made far superior too with the Chapman Stick parts, just as it is on the studio album too. It's likely why all other versions pale for me. I really thought they might get Howard up there in CVille in '06 based on very strong positive reactions to my sign at a few shows throughout the '06 June/July tour asking for Greg Howard and Dreaming Tree in CVille...missed opportunity.

Chocolate Rain interpolation has a coolness factor to it, but it's still a bit awkward whereas the '98 outros are just an onslaught that you wouldn't expect from The Dreaming Tree. Shame they don't play it like that anymore.

I am biased because I was front row at SPAC on 6/21/08 but I like that version more than Piedmont, other favorites are 8/6/99, 7/3/03, 7/8/15. For D&T this version is awesome:
