I heard 311 uses one, but it's understandable with them as well with how fast paced the lyrics are.

    hey thread-starter,

    are you a musician? vocalist?

    just curious...

i can see having a backup lyric prompter for backup incase you stumble. i think from the nonsense we hear sometimes on stage it is obvious he doesnt use it alot.

I want to see it...I had 5th row center for Hershey, I also had dead center 7th row PIT in Camden. I never saw this so called tele-prompter. I also did not see Dave pausing to read anything and I was looking for this.

At Hershey, Dave screwed up the lyrics to Shotgun so bad that he pretty much gave up on the tune altogether.

I've seen plenty of artists use tele-prompters (Ratdog, Neil Young, etc) I did not see any evidence of this at the DMB shows.

I'm not starting a debate...just saying... if he is indeed using one, he's pretty stealth about it.

What one is that? Fan reaction to these songs doesn't even come close to YNK reaction and the closest of a new song i could think of is any of the '04 songs. certainly not these songs. they are good but nothing is '04 good

Who cares? People bitch if they play the same songs every night, and now they bitch that there's a telepromter? They played 70 songs last tour, and they've already played 62 this year with 30+ shows left. Chill out.

Posted by AM.org's own Jake, 03/06/06:

The Dave Matthews Band debuted a new song from their '06 sessions, and after a slight bit of confusion by those of us not a the show about the name, it is indeed a brand new song.
The Idea Of You debuted last night about five songs into the 6.02.06 show - head over to the forums section and you'll find a a thread or two with downloads to hear it for yourself.

Continuing the trend of naming songs after songs that alredy exist (See Hello Aagin and then pick up Neil Diamond's greatest hits), artist Robyn Hitchcock has a song by the same name. Where's a nonsense name like Heathcliff's Haiku Warriors when you need it? Anyway, the DMB song is not Mr. Hitchcocks, and it is certainly not a cover. Fan reaction has been greatly positive - which hasn't happened for a live debuted song arguablly since 2002's You Never Know.

The Tour continues 6.3.06 back in the location formerly known as Deer Creek.

He does. It's there. Newer telepromters are designed to look like monitors (as in speaker monitors, not TV monitors) so they're not really noticeable and can easily be mistaken for something else.

i guess my qualm lies more with jake than with you but i was a member well before the 2004 songs debuted and when they did reaction was much more positive in respect to the 2006 songs. i can specifically remember checking the site two hours after the 6/17/04 show and all songs were already up and received with mostly rave reviews

    Re: Dave has a teleprompter

Why is this such an issue? DMB has a large catalogue. Some songs would be hard for a person who's never drank or done any drugs to remember all of the lyrics to. See Raven, Dreaming Tree, Jane, etc. Take into account that the band has pulled out songs they haven't been playing regularly. You simply can not expect Dave to be able to remember every lyric to every song he's ever written.

If you can remember every lyric to every DMB/Dave Matthews/cover song he's done, good for you. Did you listen to Halloween from WotR? If not, go ahead and do it, then you'll be thankful for the teleprompter.

What's well before 2004? I honestly I only think YNK was so well reciewved was because it was the first new song post Everyday. Not to say it's a bad song but it's not amazing. Jake's post just gave me a flash of hope. Maybe I misjudged.

Well You Never Know happens to be my favorite song and I have been a DMB fan since '96. I love plenty of songs but no song has ever meant as much to me as YNK. The lyrics, the music, the rawness with which Dave sings all make for a very special song.

I think Sugar Will is the only song post YNK to really have a similar feel.

Working in Television....I use a teleprompter a lot. I can understand why he uses one. Its not there for every song, but imagine you are singing one of your hundred plus songs and you are like "what the hell is the next lyric" you simply glance down and remind yourself and move on.

I would challenge most hardcore dave fans to recite every lyric to every song. Its not easy...

To the thread starter. I think this was a good topic and I am glad you held your ground without being an ass. Ants needs more of this.

    Re: Dave has a teleprompter

I don't see why people are getting so frusterated with this teleprompter...

The issue has been discussed, and I tend to agree with those who have stated (as I have previously) that it isn't as easy as it looks to be up there, with the lights in your eyes, pulling out crazy ass mofo chords like dave is, singing long renditions of songs that the crowd goes crazy for, checking out the crowd, hearing the screams, trying to adapt to whats going on with the band, keep in tune with the beating of the drums...it's a lot to take...even for a seasoned vetran like Dave.

They have a LOT of songs, and a LOT of them haven't been in regular rotation, so if he needs a little reminder when his mind wanders who are we to judge him? I think he is doing a FAN-FREAKIN-TASTIC job all things considered.

    and yes...

I do believe this means you will die soon.
But don't worry, because I use them too, and apparently Dave does, so we will all meet up in the afterworld soon enough and sing karaokee and smoke some of that sweet sweet pipe.

Maybe you should be up there, center stage...When was the last time you were playing your guitar and singing at the same time in front of 50,000 people again?

I think it shows dedication to the song as a whole.
