Re: **Official Drive-By Truckers Thread**

Yeah DBT doesn't play any of Jason's songs in their sets since he left the band. He will throw a few of them in his live set though still.

Jason glad you got to see the show on Saturday! I had tickets but ended up having to sell them when something came up that I couldn't get out of, was pretty bummed.

Sounds like a big studio year for DBT, apparently they are cutting a new record and Cooley is also making his first studio solo record as well.

Here's a great article written by Patterson for American Songwriter about the legacy of Bowie as a songwriter. I really enjoy Patterson's introspective articles that occasionally get published about whatever may be on his mind, and this is a good one.

I'm absolutely sick about missing their Birmingham shows at the beautiful Lyric Theater last weekend. From everything i've heard, those hometown shows were epic! Plus, i've been wanting to visit the Lyric since they've reopened it and restored it after all those years.

so Pizza Deliverance turned 17 years old. I almost never see this album mentioned with people's favorites, but look again at the track listing. there are just a handful of throw away songs but some real gems here, in bold:

Bulldozers and Dirt – 4:29 (Hood)
    Nine Bullets – 4:05 (Hood)
    Uncle Frank – 5:29 (Cooley)
Too Much Sex (Too Little Jesus) – 3:16 (Hood)
Box of Spiders – 3:30 (Hood)
One of These Days – 5:15 (Cooley)
Margo and Harold – 4:51 (Hood)
    The Company I Keep – 7:02 (Hood)
The President's Penis Is Missing – 4:12 (Hood)
Tales Facing Up – 5:03 (Hood)
Love Like This – 5:23 (Cooley)
    Mrs. Dubose – 5:40 (Malone)
    Zoloft – 3:17 (Hood)
The Night G.G. Allin Came to Town – 4:50 (Hood)

After all these years, One of These days remains one of Cooley's strongest songs. Tales Facing Up and The Company I Keep are two of my absolute favorites to catch live.

I just spun this on vinyl last night after I saw their FB post about it being the 17th anniversary. I don't put on Gangstabilly and Pizza Deliverance that often, and when I spun Pizza last night I was struck by a few things:

    1. The vinyl reissue sounds AMAZING, and I noticed that it was remasterd by Kevin Gray, which expains why.
    2. There's a reason that a bunch of these songs are still in their live sets today: they're freaking fantastic. Bulldozers, Nine Bullets, Uncle Frank, Box of Spiders, One of These Days, Company I Keep, Love Like This....all total knockouts.

IMO One Of These Days is still one of Cooley's best songs ever, and so is Uncle Frank (though I think the version of it from The Fine Print bests the original from PD.)

    Happy 20th Anniversary

    Quote:
    DBT turns 20 today.

"Yes indeed, 20 years ago, at Andy Baker's little house in Athens GA we started this crazy journey. Part of the band had never met each other, as I had played with the Alabama guys and the Georgia guys separately prior to that day. I brought beer and pizza and we recorded 5 songs.

At the end of the day I asked everyone if they'd like to play a show or two. The rest is history. - PH"

The middle album of what IMO is the greatest 3 album run by any band this century.

Definitely gonna be spinning that vinyl LOUD this weekend.

So there's a new DBT song available on Spotify all of the sudden called 'Surrender Under Protest.' It shows album cover art for a new DBT record called 'American Band', looks like we may have a new album on the horizon soon!

Good shit! New tune is rock solid. Was definitely caught off guard by the lack of Wes Freed album art. But it seems like this is going to be a very politically charged album and they probably wanted to make a more simple American statement with the cover

Yeah, it's borderline shocking to not see Wes Freed art on the cover, that's for sure....

Thanks for posting this! This quote really caught me:

"It's a small gift, within these challenging days, that one of the nation's best bands has made what very well might be its greatest album."

Its greatest album....that is HIGH praise considering this is the band that gave us Southern Rock Opera, Decoration Day, The Dirty South, and Brighter Than Creation's Dark. I can't wait to hear this.

DBT just posted on their Facebook page that there is some great Wes Freed artwork on the inside of the album.

consider the source. NPR would naturally love a left leaning political album. I'm less than thrilled about the nature of the album but look forward to hearing it.

Well the band has never really hid their political leanings, Patterson in particular. It's kind of always been sprinkled throughout their music (look at songs like 'Puttin People on the Moon,', 'A Ghost to Most', 'Get Downtown', etc), but this album does seem like it's going to have a very specific theme.

There was definitely a good amount of political commentary on English Oceans as well with Patterson's 'The Part of Him' and Cooley's 'Made Up English Oceans.'

sure, and I don't mind it at all, I easily separate my political beliefs from my taste in music. Just not sure I want a whole album of it

Yeah it's a fine line to walk, as even if you agree with their stance an entire album could come off preachy if not done right. I have confidence in their ability to do it well though. These guys are such great songwriters that they don't beat you over the head with their message.
