That looks amazing. I really wish we had one but we don't.

Hey guys - I figured I'd ask this here. I recently quit my 24 hour membership and transferred to LA Fitness.

I think LA is a bit cleaner and probably has nicer equipment. What they also have, is guys in gas masks. Wtf is this? Have y'all seen this? Very normal sized dudes, but rocking Bane masks.

I feel compelled to buy one. Joking but honestly what is this shit?

I figured, and yeah - that's exactly what they're wearing. I've seen like 4 separate guys wearing these deals.

    Anyone wear one?

Yikes. That would be a pretty strange sight. I would love to shave my head and wear one of those on a regular basis.

so stupid. NFL fans will recognize them as the mask that Marshawn Lynch often wears in warmups. But at your local gym, as a regular guy, you look like a total douce wearing one. BroScience sums it up perfectly.

Haha totally agree. As I said, these guys are very average sized dudes doing tricep pull down in a mask. If there was some beast of a dude in there wearing one, I'd be like, oh shit cool

    This is not the case.

MRI report of my back injury from July:

"L4-L5: Desiccation is noted. There is a mild broad-based disk protrusion in a right paracentral location. No actual herniation present. Mild central stenosis noted.

L5-S1: Desiccation is noted. There is a moderate sized central disk herniation present as well as a radial tear.

Probable small hemangioma noted in the body of T12"

I was able to get my hands on an inversion table so I've been hanging upside down on that bitch as much as possible. Last night I felt a positive "pop" while monkeying around. I start decompression/traction therapy tomorrow and I'm going to start seriously seeing the only chiro I trust.

Again, protect your health. Don't screw yourself up.

I wouldn't go anywhere near a chiropractor. They're not real doctors. My surgeon said it's probably the worst thing you can do for your back. Again, to each their own, but I wouldn't recommend going anywhere near one. Just do PT or get the surgery if you have a severe enough herniation.

My right shoulder got fucked up somehow and I have no idea where it came from. Lifted through it yesterday and it actually feels a bit better today than it did before yesterday. It feels like clavicle pain when doing a dip type of motion. Anyone know what it could be?

MD's are always going to put down chiropractors because they take away from their practice. Unless a doctor is specialized and licensed to work on the body the way chiros do, I'd personally stay away from a doctor wanting to deal with my spine. Same goes for one trying to tell you about your diet. Most know the baseline information but thats not what they spent 7 years in school learning about. I've been told both positive and negative stories about spinal surgery. What I have doesn't require surgery. The pain specialist (who wanted to load me up with band-aid like steroid shots) didn't even suggest surgery. I'm moving to Arizona in a month for school so going under the knife isn't an option now anyways. I went to therapy and was given a list of take home stretches. If my life depended on it, I could go to the gym and squat/deadlift/load my spine and probably be ok, I just don't want to risk it. I'm not fond of many chiropractors myself but this one I personally know, has been practicing since before I was born, and still works with athletes.

Yes it was. I had just spent eight days in South Carolina and was itching to get back into the gym. I completed my warm up deadlift sets and decided to try using a belt for the first time in my life (first mistake). I was able to pull the weight up but I felt a pinch during the top hold. Instead of stripping the weight and calling it a day, I lost the belt and took off another 50 lbs (second mistake). I was able to execute again but this time I felt the 'snap, crackle, pop' during the top hold. That was what did me in. Basically I blame the belt for throwing off my natural pattern (foreign aid caused me to round) and my ignorance for continuing.

It's stories like that make me not want to do squats and deadlifts ever. I always do less weight than I know my body can handle purely because I'm nervous about screwing up my back. I know it all comes down to focus and form but all it takes is the tiniest screw up and you're done for.

Don't let my mishaps discourage you. Would it help for me to throw in that I have tendonitis in my right elbow because of barbell benching? I modified things and strictly use dumbbells for horizontal pressing. I'm sure some of my asshatery years ago leading up to that event played a part as well. Lift heavy but lift smart. If your body tells you that maybe you should cut it off one rep short, cut it off one rep short.

The last day I did dips was last Wednesday , but it wasn't what set off the pain. It actually started after a back day (weird).

To clarify, when I went in again to do dips this Monday they hurt like hell.

Oh I know. You're right, lifting smart is the key. Also another reason why it's so important to having a spotter.

Every morning for breakfast I eat about a scoop and a half (scoop = scooper from a protein canister so about 30g) of plain oats with raisins and a squeeze of honey. I've eaten this for about the last 3 or 4 months. I've noticed my waistline is steady getting bigger. Granted, I've never eaten great (not bad just not great), but why would my metabolism just slow down instantly. Does this have anything to do with the oatmeal? It's been the one constant in this.

    ^^

Probably just hitting a plateau. If you're lifting a lot but keeping your nutrition and calorie intake the same, you're going to put on weight via muscle, unless you're doing cardio as well. Oatmeal is a pretty good breakfast because it keeps your full longer, but a small breakfast like that isn't the only contributing factor to any weight gain. Maybe try not eating oatmeal for a month to see if you lose weight or your waistline slims down, if it does, then you know oatmeal is the problem.

Also, you only eat one scoop of oatmeal every day for breakfast? That's a pretty small breakfast and I imagine it would be terribly boring to eat the same thing every morning. I mean, I have a grapefruit every morning, but never the same thing accompanying it every morning.

    Re: Weightlifting

A scoop and a half is about a half a bowl once the water has soaked in. If I eat too big a breakfast I feel bloated all day and I normally don't have much of an appetite in the mornings anyway. It's more just for the energy and to get something in me so I'm not burning protein.

I change up the fruit I put in it. I used to use blueberries but got tired of that, used pears for a while but ran out and now I am on a big raisin kick. It's about the only thing keeping me from hating breakfast every day.

My good friend just bought both. I really don't want to depend on a belt but how were the knee pads? If it feels like you're squatting on clouds, I can justify dropping $90

Ah shit, my bad I thought you were referring to these:

I do however have a pair of Reebok lifters that I enjoy. I can shift just about all of my weight on my heels and I don't worry about falling backwards.

Think I'm gonna have to change protein powder. I've some intense stomach cramps the past 3-4 days and they've usually started during or right after I have my shake. I've read several reviews all saying that ON's Whey protein gave people cramps. I've been using the hydrowhey with no problem but this is the only thing I can attribute it to. Stomach cramps, bloating, gas, etc.

    Re: Weightlifting

Alright, I have an injury I need help with. During squats with weight, I get a sharp pain in my adductor region in my left leg. I don't think it's my hip flexor because the pain is more towards my groin. Yet it doesn't hurt when I do squats with just my body weight. I've been doing a few sets of exercises on the leg adductor machine to try and strengthen that muscle and that doesn't hurt nearly as bad as squatting. Did I fuck up my form somehow? I'm a female, PR with squats is 115 (just started about 6 weeks ago).

    Re: Weightlifting

I go through spurts but anyone see any benefit to doing decline chest press/bench?

Also, when do shoulder shrugs, anyone see benefit by shrugging in rotational motion? I like doing shrugs on a smith machine but that obviously hinders ROM...
