Carlin is the crown jewel. Love Rock too. Seinfeld still very funny, some him a few years ago. Louis CK is probably the top one. Sarah Silverman probably funniest female comedienne (which I admit is like being called best white cornerback)

I certainly love a lot of the names already brought up in here, but without looking at all the posts I can practically guarantee one name that hasn't been brought up -- Dara O'Briain. He's from Ireland, now lives in London, I can't recommend this guy enough. He does REALLY long shows, and is even great about picking out random people in the audience to talk to and totally running with what their job is, the guy's just hilarious all around.

edit: and no, if you're not super familiar with the general UK culture, you won't necessarily get every single reference, but trust me overall it's more than worth the time.

Used to be a Silverman fan, but I feel her specials have continually gotten worse..her latest I thought was awful. Female comic wise my favorite is probably Whitney Cummings... Amy Shumer I put in with Silverman, shes just gotten too repetitive with her material

Maria Bamford is the best female comic right now IMO.

    Haven't been a fan.

I'm a fan of Chelsea Peretti, as far as the ladies go.

oh there are a shit load of great comics based out of the UK. They're masters of the comedy/panel show. you can go youtubing for Mock The Week (which O'Briain hosts), QI, Nevermind The Buzzcocks, Would I Lie To You, 8 Out Of 10 Cats... tons of great stuff.

Hannibal is incredible. Chicago guy too. Demetri got kind of stale for me after a little while. Still pretty awesome.

I really think Bill Burr is the top of the game right now. Dude is unreal. He just riffles off new material constantly and so much of it is pure genius.

CK is obviously great as well, but Burr is the tops.

The first three guys on the list are local Boston guys who are absolute comedic geniuses. Definitely look up their stuff if you have time. My Dad has been a stand up comic for almost 15 years now in the Boston/New England area, so my views on stand up comics are a obviously bit skewed. However, some guys should be on 100% of lists (Carlin and Cosby for example).

I think one of the more prevailing things about Cook is that he doesn't really have much respect amongst other comedians, like he's too hacky/mainstream. almost like Jeff Dunham but without the puppets. I know that when Comedy Central was doing the special after Greg Giraldo's death, they're talking to Dave Attel and he references the other special that he was kind of in charge of, and it seemed fairly obvious that Cook was NOT one of the comics that Attel handpicked, that the network told him he was getting.

Cook also had a reputation as a joke thief early in his career

No offense but I think you are misinformed. You should listen to the O&A where Patrice Oneil's friends, including CK, Bobby Kelly, Dane, Burr are all telling stories about them coming up at the same time and how close they were and still are. Hell, Dane was in Burrs and Kellys wedding parties.

If you dont think hes funny thats fine. But please, he is well respected in the community. Dane's not my style of comedy, but i still think he's funny. He is definitely talented.

Can't really comment on the thievery. Seems fishy how similar those jokes were.

Much of his earlier TV specials was lifted from local Boston comics (Lenny Clarke, Don Gavin, Kevin Knox), and there is the widely known history with Louis CK. There is also the situation with the One Fund concert for the Boston Marathon bombing victims that made a lot of comedians and comedy fans really sour on him. He certainly has his friends (mostly comedians with the same agent, Barry Katz) in the industry, and was always nothing but nice when he was around, but to say he's well respected is a bit of a stretch.

well alright I'm genuinely surprised to hear the likes of Louis CK and Bill Burr saying Cook is a true friend and a worthy comic, because they are easily two of the best and most admired guys working right now. But at the same time, I'd really love to hear from some others around here if possible, just in that trust me, I wasn't pulling that out of my ass. I sincerely feel like I remembering hearing that sort of sentiment about Cook over the last 5-10 years, and more than just once. At the very least, I think the observation I was making from the Giraldo death special is there, that you can read that sort of meaning from Atell.

I honestly haven't really even heard any of Cook's latest stuff for probably at least a few years now.

Jim Jefferies is still my favorite, though his short lived show on FXX was nothing special.
